Three Things : Fabric (& a giveaway)

One of my favorite parts of my recent creativity travel was working with fabric in my projects. I have been playing with bits of it with my sewing machine and starting to collect small pieces here and there (haven't gotten into any clothes sewing yet).
Here's a fabric layout I made in Christina Lazar Schuler's class at Inspired called Textile Anthology (check her Etsy store for available kits):
She talked about making an entire album of fabric pages (the one above is 8x8). I like that idea and I also love that this sort of page can just go in my regular albums as well (put it into a page protector or add grommets to fit to your album rings).
So why fabric? I like to think of it in the same way I think of pattern paper - a decoration. A bit of color. The cool thing about fabric is that it also lends texture to your project. We can all use a bit more texture in our lives. Fabric can be added to a layout with adhesive or stitched on by hand (I actually really liked the process of hand-stitching the photo on the layout above) or with a machine (quick and easy). Try using it in place of patterned paper on your next project. It's also especially great for covering chipboard albums.
Currently I am storing my fabric pieces in my metal shelf:
Here are three of my favorite sites for checking out fabric include Sew Mama Sew (love searching by color), Purl Soho (especially loving their contemporary collection), and Repodepot. You can also search etsy for vintage fabric sellers like Shabby Vintage Mom who has some cute bundles of vintage fabrics.
The giveaway today is for Donna Downey's newest book Fabric Scrapbooking. It's very much a project-based book with step by step instructions and supply lists to walk you through each project.
To enter the giveaway simply leave a comment below. I will close comments and pick a winner on Wednesday night around 7pm (April 23).

Also wanted to comment on the past post about your grandma...
My aunt is in an assisted living facility.
I visit her a lot and have been privileged to film each of the residents talking about their lives. I say privileged because every Monday I get to step back in time and get perspective on life. Hearing them talk about their childhoods especially makes me think about my kids and what they will remember.
Telling our stories is so, so important. I hope everyone is talking to older relatives and getting those stories down in some way.

This is an exciting trend in scrapbooking, because sewing was one of my first loves! What a great combination. I love your page-sew happy, haha.

Wow...fabric albums. Is kind of intimidating for me...I rarely used fabric pieces on my layouts. But I think with a book and step by step directions...what can go wrong??? :)

Thanks Ali, for this inspiration. I just inherited my mother's old sewing machine as she finally bought herself a new one after 31 years! So I'd love to learn more about integrating it into my scrapbooking.

Is that all the fabric you have? Just those four small piles? Oh girl. I think I really NEED that book. I've got lots of fabric to put to good use.

Hi Ali,
Thank you once again for the giveway. I am pretty much a self taught sewer. I brought my first sewing machine at the age of 28 (i am now 41)can you believe that. My grandmother, her mother, my mother were all sewer. I was very much a tomboy as a little girl so my mother and grandmother figured I wouldn't like sewing. Well I love it. I have made a lot of projects since I bought my sewing machine. I have to admit I am not very creative. It is very hard for me, but when I see something I like, I end up doing the project pretty good, if I say so myself. I have done curtains, pillows, napkins, table runners, and table mats. I would love to incorporate fabric into my scrapbook, but I just don't know how. This is where I need help. I would enjoy a copy of Donna's book. Thank you for being such an inspiration.
