Three Things : Fabric (& a giveaway)

One of my favorite parts of my recent creativity travel was working with fabric in my projects. I have been playing with bits of it with my sewing machine and starting to collect small pieces here and there (haven't gotten into any clothes sewing yet).
Here's a fabric layout I made in Christina Lazar Schuler's class at Inspired called Textile Anthology (check her Etsy store for available kits):
She talked about making an entire album of fabric pages (the one above is 8x8). I like that idea and I also love that this sort of page can just go in my regular albums as well (put it into a page protector or add grommets to fit to your album rings).
So why fabric? I like to think of it in the same way I think of pattern paper - a decoration. A bit of color. The cool thing about fabric is that it also lends texture to your project. We can all use a bit more texture in our lives. Fabric can be added to a layout with adhesive or stitched on by hand (I actually really liked the process of hand-stitching the photo on the layout above) or with a machine (quick and easy). Try using it in place of patterned paper on your next project. It's also especially great for covering chipboard albums.
Currently I am storing my fabric pieces in my metal shelf:
Here are three of my favorite sites for checking out fabric include Sew Mama Sew (love searching by color), Purl Soho (especially loving their contemporary collection), and Repodepot. You can also search etsy for vintage fabric sellers like Shabby Vintage Mom who has some cute bundles of vintage fabrics.
The giveaway today is for Donna Downey's newest book Fabric Scrapbooking. It's very much a project-based book with step by step instructions and supply lists to walk you through each project.
To enter the giveaway simply leave a comment below. I will close comments and pick a winner on Wednesday night around 7pm (April 23).

I can't wait to start using fabric on my mini-books that your book inspired me to make. Love the page you made of your family! Thanks!

I am just starting to learn quilting - from my Grammy! Already I am accumulating scraps and little bits of fabric that NEED to have something done with them...
Pick me!

Thanks for the offer to give away a cool fabric scrapbooking book! I've been listening to Amy Cowen at Creative Mom podcast, and she it really into quilt journaling, and now the wheels are turning in my head to try something like that--and now you come up with this great idea too! I'm really excited about this opportunity to try a new creative project.

I have also just started using some fabric mixed in with my paper art. Usually felt but a little patterned fabric also.
I love your layout and I would love to get a copy of Donna's new book. Win or not, I'll likely pick up a copy.

Hello Ali,
I once used fabric on a circle journal but that was the first and last time. I do have a sewing machine but am not very handy with it. Perhaps this book of Donna is a new source of inspiration!
Really like your fabric shelfs, how well organised!
Regards,
Inge

I just used fabric on a layout last weekend. Cut up my dd's pj's and made embellishments with them. Great idea!

Wow, I have never been gutsy enough to scrap with fabric but I have a huge box of swatches waiting to be played with! It is a bit intimidating to me but looks so great! I think I will have to give it a try!

Ali, you & Donna both are just such inspirations - daily it seems!! I LOVE fabric but am not much of a seamstress, feel I need to remedy that. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to get a copy of Donna's new book.

Love your LO, Ali. I've been collecting fabric for a while now, to use in my scrapbooking. However, the only fabric I've used so far is cut into thick strips and stapled on the edge as a page turner :)
