3 Things : playing with printing + a giveaway
Tags:Staying in the theme of words + photos this week I wanted to experiment with a couple different inkjet printing surfaces. I took that photo of Chris & Simon and the tie and printed it on each of the following using my HP Photosmart D7360:
[ Warning : any of my experiences below could very well be operator error. ]
WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum : Quick and easy. Great result. See sample below. It's been awhile since I last used vellum and it was fun to reintroduce it into my supplies. Definitely want to play with it more: thinking about layering with transparencies and text and photos.
EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets : love the idea of this. My first issue is that the paper got stuck in my printer (grumble). Round two, stuck again. What seems to be happening is that the fabric is peeling back and getting stuck inside the mechanisms of the pinter. I am thinking to myself as I go through this process: how long do I mess with this before I just quit? Round three, stuck again (and yep, I am trying different settings as I go). Ok, after a couple more tries (and the passage of half-an-hour) I am done trying - I am not enjoying the process and there is no simplification happening here. It's such a bummer - would love to see how this would work with my photo. I may try again on another day. Anyone else tried this and had success? Tips?
Grafix Rub Onz - Create your own rub ons. Super cool idea. I wanted to see if this would work with a photo + some words...and at least in my case it was a challenge. This is a multi-step process that includes printing, then placing adhesive paper on top, and then adhering your image to final paper. The real challenge is getting the adhesive paper onto your image without bubbles. The second challenge is in the choice of the paper you rub on to. I tried it on textured cardstock and it didn't seem to work - it just tore the paper. I will probably try this whole process again to see if I can make it work.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets (notice the pulled up edges). [2] Photo printed onto WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum - I wanted to see what it would look like with the KI lace cardstock in the background (right now it is just held on there with a paper clip). [3] My attempt at using the Grafix Rub Onz onto cardstock (this could have been part of the problem - maybe it needed a slicker surface for it to adhere) - all it did for me was rip the cardstock. [4] The original photo printed on photo paper.

Hi Ali. What I want to work on right now is keeping my camera OUT and letting my hubby use it too. :-) Even though my camera is always in the kitchen, it stays in its bag and it needs to be OUT so not only is it faster access for me, but that way my husband can take pictures too. I really think by now he is aware of the 'moments' I try to capture. Thanks so much for all that you are doing this week. I am LOVIN' it!! peace and blessings, Cindy

Hi Ali,
Thanks for the opportunity to win some paper. Always can use paper products...lol.
I am a real amateur when it comes to photography but my best tip is to get up very close to your subject. I often stand too far away and end up with little figures, instead of getting up close and capturing the wonderful smile or frown. Remember get up close!

My tip has to be Keep your digital camera battery always charged. How many photos have I lost because the camera won't even turn on.
I think what I'm going to have to do is play more with my photos is photoshop... I love all the filters the program offers. I just don't play enough with my photos.
You're such an inspiration, Ali! Thanks for everything!

Hey Ali--
My favorite photo tip is to take LOTS of pictures--it's always worth taking a million photos to get a good one-or in my case-a "real" one that captures my boy's personality or moment. My 2 year old loves having his picture taken and asks me to take his picture by saying and signing the word "cheese" to me. And my 4 year old is so great about photos as well-I guess he's just used to it by now!
Thanks for the chance for a giveaway, and even more so, thanks for the continued inspiration!
Erin :)

Thanks for doing the draw, Ali! My biggest thing to work on is being "ruthless" with purging my excess photos on my computer. A tip that I have is to upload your photos to your printing service of choice (I like Costco :)) at least once per month. That way, when you're ready to order some prints, you don't have to spend forever at the computer selecting and uploading photos - for me, it's made the printing/ordering process much, much easier and efficient :)

Three things to work on with photos:
1) Being in more of them as I seem to be the photographer these days and thus absent from a lot of our pictures.
2) shifting so the item of interest (usually my son) isn't always centered, but maybe to the left or right and changing the perspective a little.
3) taking pictures of things like the playground or flowers, or shoes related to the story without necessarily the people in them to capture the story more.

My favorite photo tip is to look at things in a different angle than you usually do. Who knows amazing pictures can come out of the usual if you will start to take a different approach.
Thanks for the daily inspiration would love to win...crossing my fingers

Ali,
I love all of this!!! When I'm trying to take pictures of my kids, I try and get them to laugh. The pictures always turn out great with them laughing and smiling. I also like that most of the pictures come out with them looking at laughing at each other instead of looking at the camera.

Loving this week's posts, Ali!! Thanks!
I'm working hard at a photo a day, figuring that at the end of the year I'll be a better photographer, and will reward myself with a Rebel. I've found myself turning the flash off more, and playing with the settings on my camera, such as A priority. I'm taking my camera with me EVERYWHERE and that's made a huge differenc as well!

Thanks for sharing such a treasure trove of information and inspiration this week!
My biggest photo tip is not to be afraid to take photos of others and give them away. I have found a real passion for sports photography, and I give away lots of photos to my kids' teammates. They love them, their families love them, and what a rush to walk in to someone else's home and see the picture that you took displayed on the mantle or refridgerator!

My favorite photo tip: take lots of pictures. With digital cameras, there's no need to wait for that perfect shot like with film. Some of the best pictures I took of my son have been when I was just clicking away. I can't wait to take pictures of him at the beach!

Hi Ali - Love this "Words + Photos" topic!!! Couldn't have come at a better time. For me, what I need to work on is just making it a habit to having the camera with me -- not all the time, but for most of my day -- I have a lot of "oooh, I wish I had a camera" moments.
Photo Tip: Know your camera... :)
xoxo!!!

I love those tips for printing photos...I never thought of doing it on vellum.
I have a DSLR camera, but I really can't use it that well. I just need to get some time to work with it and learn what it can do and actually be able to take nice pictures with it. That is the reason I bought it, I just haven't had time!!!! That is what I need to work on!

Love your ideas and tips. Plan to print them out and keep them handy. One thing that I need to work on is NOT printing all of my pictures. Even though my camera is digital, I'm still stuck in the film mode of thinking that all pictures must be printed out. Gotta start deleting some, as you suggested, then I won't be tempted!

Love your three things each week. I am currently working on getting my camera out every time I *see* a photograph. I have a habit of putting it off until later, or tomorrow-and it never happens. So, when I see the light coming through the trees and looking so lovely, instead of delaying I'm trying to make sure I snap a shot right then and there.

I haven't used the photo fabric, but I have made a photo quilt using regular bleached muslin that I treated myself with Bubble Jet Set.
When dry, iron the treated fabric flat and then iron on a piece of freezer paper the size of the paper you use in your printer. It is really cheap to do it this way and my photos turned out really nicely.
I need to read my manual!!!!!! I have that great digital Rebel camera and I still don't really know how to use it. But I still take some really cool pix. I'm also working on digital manipulation-making my photos better and even just printing them right in the sizes I want.

I love to take pictures of people. I mean, I take pictures of things and animals and landscapes and whatnot, but I LOVE to take pictures of people, and the best pictures of people, in my opinion, are ones where you can see what their eyes are saying... so I find I need to get down to eye level when my kids are playing on the floor or on the ground... or zoom in far enough to be able to see the expression in their eyes if I am standing too far away.
For me, people + eyes = more interesting photos
