Three Things : Creative Books (+ a giveaway)
Tags:Three books to inspire, challenge and fill you up creatively this week:
True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling by LK Ludwig : I got to meet LK at Artfest last year and enjoyed her art just about as much as her personality. I ordered this book last night and am looking forward to some new ideas (it's been quite awhile since I picked up my art journal). After looking through the next book on the list (see below) I have some good ideas for backgrounds to try.
Acrylic Revolution by Nancy Reyner : This book is packed full with techniques for working with acrylic paint. I have been looking through it the last couple of evenings, dreaming about potentially doing some painting, and being really inspired to get out my paints and try something new and different (new + different for me).
Taking Flight: Inspiration And Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wingsby Kelly Rae Roberts : I was lucky to see an advanced copy of this book on my recent girl's weekend and I can't wait to get my own. There are a bunch of mixed media how-to's as well as a lot of words (of which you know I am a fan - I like to know the thoughts behind the actions whenever possible). According to Kelly Rae, "this book isn't a traditional how-to book, but rather a book that dives deeper into telling our stories about how we came into the creative life - as a way to inspire others to stretch their wings and see what is possible for their own creativity."
Here's one of the Amazon reviews on this book:
I have two copies of Taking Flight to give away this week. To be entered into the drawing leave a comment below and let me know about your favorite creative technique is these days (it can be scrapbooking, mixed media, anything). Comments will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm Pacific and the winners announced shortly after.

Scrapbooking is my cup of tea! And my latest "technique" is stopping my thoughts. I think about every detail so long that it isn't fun anymore. Now I try to scrapbook spontaneous. Just sit (or stand..) grab a picture and start adhering things. Not that endless shoveling stuff!

I always start with a black canvas and use white for my drawing. it takes many many layers of acrylic to build up color but I think the color looks really rich when done.

Hi Ali...gosh, I don't know if you'll see this, given it's comment #750-something. ;) Just a few things to comment on. Thanks for ALL THE Q&A. Love it! Appreciate it! Even more so, knowing how busy you are & that you're in the throes of being pregnant. Secondly, I received your new book the other day. It's beautiful & so inspiring. I went out the next day & picked up some goodies to begin a new mini book. Thirdly...I was wondering if you had any plans of starting up Weekend Creative again? I finally finished a Weekend Creative project today. I had all the stuff for it for the longest time but just haven't been inspired (or whatever) to put it all together. I love the results though. (I made a punch collage). I'd send you a link to a photo of it but I haven't done that yet). ;) Again, thanks for all you do for us, here on your blog. Take care, momma!

I'm so sorry I missed the time deadline, in France we're wednesday, but I'm still leaving a post, these books look really inspiring, thanks for showing ! my fav technique at the moment is a tip from Tim Holtz, with glossy accent and fragments, used as mosaic to give dimension, or accent small details; simply love this !

I am trying to move over to more digital, so I am using more printing and graphic design type elements with my photos and right now I am in love with ribbon on my pages... as well as black stamps.

I am working with layering washes of acrylic paint onto layers of gesso and then taking some of the wash away with kitchen towels and sandpaper - lovely technique.

Am I too late??? I hope not! With a very active toddler, all my creativity these days seems to be centred around stickers, glitter, felt and big sheets of paper. So my favourite technique at the moment is anything that keeps a toddler amused for more than 5 minutes and doesn't make a huge mess!

Hello!!
I've been using photos as the background of my cards recently. I add words using Photoshop or rub-ons! Loving it!!

I have been inspired by nature this late Summer/early Autumn and have been taking rubbings of various mediums from leaves and bark to signs and interesting textures (the side of our brickhouse, the pattern on an old trunk at an auction) and incorporating them into my scrapbooking and mixed media work. My creative technique lately has been dabbling in photography - angles and close-ups (filling the frame). I've had some amazing results with my small kodak!
