Thoughts On A Rainy Wednesday Morning

• I can't believe I am saying this but I think I like purple. The last time I went shopping I couldn't believe how much purple there was as a color for this season, but I think I like it. My Mom will be so happy (she loves purple).
• Chris and I attended a really inspiring fundraising breakfast this morning for an organization called Committed Partners for Youth. It's a great local youth mentoring group that just merged with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Listening to people share their stories of being mentored and what that has meant to them in the lives was inspiring to say the least (especially as someone who truly values the sharing of stories). The impact that one person can make on the life of another is so, so amazing. And that it takes a village...
• Parent/Teacher conference today with Simon's second grade teacher. Always interesting and informative.
• I attended a concert here the other night with my friend Amy. She's a huge fan of a local Portland band called Blind Pilot. They are just starting out on tour this week and are worth catching if you are into this sort of mellow/alternative music. They are on iTunes or you can check out some of their videos here.
• I am on a quest to remove myself from random email subscriptions (stuff like Target, Barnes & Noble, Quick Books, Nike, etc). It's just one more level of clutter that I am happy to do without.
• Ordered a new book at the suggestion of one of my Yesterday & Today students called Writing Motherhood. It sounds like it's all about telling your personal story of motherhood.
• After having Anna around for 8 months now I think I am finally feeling like myself again (at least I am this morning). When I say that I mean that interesting combination of the me I was before she came along and the me I am now (and the constant evolution of life). I've been reflecting on that quite a bit lately. And maybe it's just because I am finally-almost-sorta-can-get-my-jeans-on-on-a-good-day fitting into some of my pre-second baby clothes. Whatever it is, it is good.

Okay, I want a do-over. I was awake thinking of this at 3:30 this morning. 2 thoughts. One--my son and I were watching Spongebob the other day and it was the one where Spongebob and Patrick are watching over Sandy's pets while she's gone. They are having so much fun playing with her pet worm (Wormy!) and are freaked out the next time when they come back and find wormy gone and in it's place is a butterfly. They're wondering where their own pal is--did it fly away? Was it consumed by this new creature? Well, of course, we know it became the butterfly. My son asked me at the time if Wormy knew it was now a butterfly or did it still think it was the "worm"? I didn't think much about it at the time but that was a pretty insightful question, don't you think? So, I was thinking about your posting and then about the whole worm/butterfly thing and realized the connection. As we become mothers, we go through our own chrysalis of sorts. We become hybrids of who we were and what we are and what we want to be. Remember when you began digital scrapbooking? How awkward it feels to learn over again something you've done a tried-and-true way? Even though digital offers many great new ways you're also doing traditional scrapbooking as well. You've combined the best of both worlds. So, think of yourself as a hybrid. It's the trendy thing now. Oh, and I have embraced purple as my signature color too.

Ali-I was struck by your rings in your photo. I don't think I have ever heard you speak of them, what did you have on? You have done a good job trying to describe feelings of motherhood or maybe it's just feelings of life as you ride along.

Hi Sue - I wear two rings - both gold. One is my wedding ring and the other is a band of plumerias that my parents got for me, my sister, and my sister in law last Christmas (I wear it on my middle finger on my right hand and I love it). I don't wear much jewelry but these are two that I always wear.

Congrats on being able to fit into your pre-Anna clothes! I am still struggling with that myself (my daughter Leah was born in March). Any tips on how you got the weight off? I am trying my best to eat healthy and exercise, it just doesn't seem to want to go away!

What a great reflective post, Ali. I love your hair. And the purple thing - I have fully embraced that trend this fall, for some reason it's the only color I've purchased multiple times. I hope it stays around for awhile :)

cheers to YOU ali! i also am 'decluttering' my life, it feels great. i had 507 emails a few weeks ago and i was done with it. i couldn't concentrate on the more important emails: family, friends, clients and students. so i wiped out all of the junk mail. i now answer my email right away, delete it if needed or file it if needed. THEN i went and 'unsubscribed' to all of these random newsletters i was getting that i wasn't even reading, seriously why subscribe if i wasn't even reading them. i cleaned up my favorites as well as my hard drive. this is all an attempt to get back to my REAL life. last month i grounded myself from facebook for 7 days, did not miss it and have been off if it ever since. it was a time suck. i'm crafting a lot more, sewing, reading like i love to and spending more time with my loved ones. life is good again! oops, apologies for going on and on, i'm just so proud of myself! ♥ and hugs, rachel

Hey Ali,
I love the sweater coat! I've been thinking about getting it for some time. It's a bit pricey, but so super cute! Have you felt that it's been pilling up? Would you recommend it?

i just went searching through your archives for this post, because it popped up in my head today. I had a baby 7 months ago (#3) - and still feeling like life is turned upside down, still trying to fit into those pre-baby clothes (5 lbs hanging around) still trying to figure out my "new normal". And I remembered this post that you said after having Anna, finally having a normal-feeling day. I see now it was at 8 months post-partum you wrote this. Hopeing soon feeling back to myself...or a new self.
