Animals Among Us.

Simon has a good-sized collection of stuffed animals. Last week we gathered them all up and lined them against the wall in his room. It was so cool to see them all together. So many colors and so many memories. There are a few animals tucked in here and there that have been around a long time - and seen many things through their years.
I wonder what the average life span of a stuffed animal is?
Two of my favorites are mine from childhood. Aggie - a stuffed bear that shows the wear of love. And Sunny - a little yellow lion that winds up to sing You Are My Sunshine. Simon has not taken a great interest in either one, but the fact that they continue to live among us - in my own house as an adult - is so cool.
Simon has a strong connection and attraction to animals. At his speech therapy appointment on Thursday he was virtually silent until Debbie brought out a basket of animals. Cows, lions, tigers, giraffes (a big favorite right now), and elephants. His face lit up as he reached for each one by name. I think Debbie was in shock at his spontaneous use of lanuage to label each of the animals. An exctied kind of shock. It is challenging to sit and watch his silence in his speech appointments - especially when I know there are many things he says at home. But hit on something he is passionate about and, there you go, out come the words.
Today I was invited by another mother at Simon's school to go see Full Monty at the local theater. Loved the movie - always interesting to experience a Broadway adaptation. We are going to have lunch first and then head to the Hult Center for the show. Looking forward to a nice afternoon.

Bingo! I can relate to that statement so much. My son isn't quite there yet, but I can see him trying so hard to communicate.
Thank you for sharing your stories.

It is funny how kids connect so much with their animals. They are real to them, a friend in this big world. I also find it interesting to watch those that they take a special interest in. I still LOVE my stuffed bear from childhood, Freddy. He sleeps under my bed.:)

I remember such a similar picture of all our stuffed animals lined up on your bed--with the orage wall paper in your old room!
Give Aggie and sunshine a hug for me :)

This is so true. Man it reminds me of Seth! He STILL LOVES stuffed animals and so does my 8 year old (he's ADHD but has SOME ASpergers symptoms)..ANYWAY, stuffed animals are huge. Then my dear friend Beth bought Seth a stuffed dog when he was two..to keep him CALM at Wal-mart (b/c back then he would scream,..hee hee.....).. Anyway, he was thrilled and do you KNOW he HELD ON TO "Shilo" and still has him, still sleeps with him. I've done a layout ON SHILO. He's special. He's not AS REAL to seth was he use to be. SEth use to feed him and NEVER let him out of his sight.just loved that thing to death. Now he can leave it in his bed. He doesn't take Shilo anywhere now unless we're on a trip. We NEVER forget Shilo. Your blog just reminded me of those times.....hard as they were, they were always special. There's a pureness to our children.
