Ever wanted your child to like something?

I was so excited when Simon began developing an interest in little cars and trains. There is something so inherently little boy about driving them all around the house. I just think they are cool. Some of the Matchbox cars we have were ones that my brother, sister and I played with when we were kids. Gotta love toys that last for generations.

And to fuel the train love: we have a neighbor boy that we have connected with - he is a few months younger than Simon and a total kick in the pants. His Mom and I decided it would be cool to get these two together. So every Wednesday afternoon we rotate between our two houses. The first time we went there I about fell over when I saw his Thomas the Train collection and GIANT table set up at just the right height for all the trains. I think Simon was in awe too. Forget about the other little boy - let me at the trains! Since that day a few weeks ago it has been nothing but Thomas around here.

And a new word for Simon: helicopter. Yep, the kid says helicopter. We have one Thomas video that he requests immediately upon coming downstairs and one of the characters is Harold the Helicopter. He is all over that guy. And as perfect reinforcement, one of his speech therapists has a helicopter toy in her office - the first thing he reaches for of course. The dude is really trying to use more words and communicate with his words - that is awesome.

"Sara`quale che vuole Dio."  which translates "It will be as God wishes."
This quote came to me from a very sweet woman named Dee. She and I met through a connection on Two Peas awhile back and we were in a Circle Journal together last year. She is very wise. And kind. At one point in her emails I expressed a hope to meet her at some point down the line and her response was the above quote. I kept that quote in my special quote spot because I loved seeing the Italian translation (she is a lover of all things Italy) and because it is just so right-on for everything in my life these days.

"Sara`quale che vuole Dio."  The Regional Autism evaluator visited Simon at his school on Friday. She is in the process of deciding on an educational diagnosis for Simon. The report from Simon's teacher about the morning she was there: Simon flirted with her the whole time. I was laughing so hard when she told me this. She said that Simon sat at the table like he is expected to and just smiled and made little faces at the woman who was sitting in the corner of the room (her goal was simply to observe him in his school environment and chat with his teacher). His teacher also reported that he painted and drew right along with the other kids - basically following all the directions that were asked of him. In general, some days he will paint/draw and other times he will just sit at the table....or want to get up and do something else.

His teacher reported to the evaluator that Simon has really grown in his abilities over the last year. That he has not always been the way that she experienced him on that day. Once again, this shcool and his teachers have been SO GOOD for him.

So after all that - we will meet with the evaluator next week. She will come here and chat with me and observe him in our home environment. It will be so interesting to hear what her thoughts are on him. He has come so far even in the last couple months. More language for sure. And this is all so good. I am not sure where it will leave us in all this...but we can see him growing and that, my friends, is wonderful.

That's the update from here this morning. Happy Monday.
