Taking a break from questions to give a Simon update. Last Friday we met with Simon's new doctor - a DAN! (Defeat Autism Now) practicioner who follows to protocols set forth by the DAN! conference: basically biomedical intervention for the treatment of autism. This includes the gluten free/casein free diet (among other possible allergens) and supplementation. Plus a bunch of other things I have not gotten into yet. You know how this all goes, one step at a time.
Our initial meeting was good. The diet is the foundation and we need to get on that in every aspect. We had been lax at his school - not really being firm in what we were wanting. But now, after meeting with the doctor, we are armed with more information and determination. I talked with the school today and have a meeting to talk with his main teacher tomorrow. She sounds really willing to do whatever we want. I will be supplying snacks and lunch items that Simon can eat when their menu consists of something that he can't have (most things it seems LOL). At least he likes the gf/cf hot dogs, fish sticks and chicken nuggets - and MAN are those last two things expensive - I just need to find some time to make them myself. For now, though, the convenience is worth the cost with my schedule.
Our next step is to have some tests done: a heavy metal test, a yeast test, an organic acid test, a food sensitivity test, etc. We need to go up to Portland for those - did I mention that this nice Doctor comes down here from Portland once a month to meet with patients who want this type of treatment and support. Love him even more for that. Simon will also be starting on some supplements here soon.
So there you have it. We are still in our house - no takers yet. Don't any of you out there want to move here and buy my house LOL? But things, overall, are good. I had a few very grumpy days last weekend...but I am feeling better again. Stronger again. It is amazing that I really have no idea where we will be in the fall or at Christmas time. And that right now I seem perfectly ok with that. Just going with the flowI guess...

How cool that you took a picture while you were there. (You're looking skinny, by the way! Getting ready for vacation?!) So glad to hear things are going well with him, A.
And I'm glad you aren't so grumpy anymore! Man, you were hard to handle like that. ;) hee!

Sounds like an awesome doctor Ali! And cool picture, it looks like you're in a time warp...modern you in a 70's setting :) Good luck with the ongoing diet stuff.
Being in limbo is hard. hard to plan things I find. Hope all the house/moving stuff happens at just the right time!

Ali,
Great news on the doctor. I just love the way that Oregonians think, drive from PDX to Eugene, cause there is a need... just such an awesome place to be....
Can I ask a favor? Could you please post or send me the books (I know you used to have them linked)that you have been reading on Autism. I am seriously thinking that I should have Declan evaluated while we are home in 2 weeks (back in good ole Oregon) and I want to do a Powells stop for some reference materials.
I am considering the gluten free diet as well...

I admire you for doing the diet. I could never do this because Grayson is such a terrible eater and she will go for a few days without eating the things that she loves. I am really curious to find out how this helps you guys.
The summer months are harder for us because their is alot less structure ( yep, we were not a structure household at all until this whole ordeal) since she is not in school. She is going to music camp in July for a week and I know that she will love it!
I am so envious of the awareness and treatment that you have in your area. Mine is terrible and we had actually considered moving if the treatment that is available here wasn't working but we have been fortunate that it has. If she was low functioning we defintley would've moved.
BTW, How do you get a picture of Simon? Grayson will not look into the camera and Ihave a zoom lenses that I have to chase her around with. Your pictures of Simon are really cute.

Very good news about Simon's new doc!! It's fabulous to find someone like that!! Are you having Simon NAET tested? The tests you mentioned sound very much like the NAET testing that my niece had done. If you need info about it from someone with some experience with the process, I can hook you up with my SIL. Pretty fascinating stuff!!

Ali, count me amoung your fans. I love the way you combine pattern papers. My question is about journaling. You mention that you typeset your journaling, but it looks like your very own handwriting. Have you had a custom font made?

Ali - I still owe you recipes - yikes! (and a sorry - just been too hot at home to use the computer in my attic office)
gf/cf chicken nuggets are pretty easy to make - I used to make a big batch all at once - and freeze them on a cookie sheet, bag 'em, and then I could heat them up as needed. Never could get the knack of making fish sticks though...
I'm so glad that you like your DAN Dr. and have found a resource in your journey.

Wow, you guys sound like you are rockin with the autism thing. My niece has gotten no where near the treatment with hers. But she is still improving. She's 180 degrees from where she was at 3 (she's 9 now).
And I'd gladly buy your house, in a heartbeat because it's a dream of mine to live in Oregon or Washington state. But alas, DH just got an awesome new job. No moving. For a long time. :(

Sounds like things are going well for you. I have a friend who started this journey a few years ago when her son was only 18 months old or so. She's an autism expert at this point and your entries remind me of her. If you would ever like for me to get you in touch with her, please feel free to email me. I know she would love to speak with anybody to help them avoid some of her own pitfalls.
Good luck to you and your Simon. He looks like a great kid.
