Peace at work.
Tags:One of the many books on my night table right now is called Quiet Mind: One Minute Retreats from a Busy World by David Kundtz. Every couple nights I pick it up and randdomly flip through. Last night I came across a section called Finding Peace at Work. I thought the meditation entry entitled Weariness was really powerful and useful and I want to share it with you today:
Just typing that all out made me feel a little more calm.
Things are crazy here. In so many good ways. Life is so like that. Yesterday nothing was happening for me. Words would not come that needed to come. Creativity was taking a nap...so I decided to take a nap too. Trying to allow myself little time outs...carving out times to relax my mind, change my scenery, refresh my creativity.
I am also really trying to make time when I go to bed to read - often times I am just too worn out, but for now that is the best time. My main book right now, the one that is currerently living in my head, is called Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. I picked it up from the Portland airport last weekend. It is good. At the airport they have a couple Powell's Books shops that are like heaven for travelers. I was looking for the new Oprah book, A Million Little Pieces (which I have ordered now) but they were all out. So I walked around and read the little tags that employees had placed near the books - recommending ones that had meant something to them. Crossing to Safety was one of those books. It is about two couples friendship over the years. Wallace Stegner is a really amazing author - rich in vocabulary and description and emotion. I imagine I will read other books from him after this.
Maybe today you will join me in taking a few mini-breaks, a matter of seconds really, to follow the meditations above. Just a bit of positive self-talk to help us all.

Thanks, Ali, for this post. It sure has brought me back down to earth. By the way, I loved your piece on 'Ask the Experts' in the November issue of CK. It's great to get to know you.

this is my first post on your blog but i just had to say it really hit home with me. As a mum of 4 young boys, running my own business and everything that each day brings it can be overwhelming at times. Thank you for the hint to step back. I will try and find that book in the UK. Thank you.

I was just reading bout seomthing like this is a school book. This person took a weekend break and found that it didn't help. But a minute or 5 minute really does help. this is something that I know I can definatly use in my life right now.

This is a really neat passage. Thanks for sharing this. The first and only time I was in Portland I totally fell in love with Powell's. It is so cool to have used and new books together on the same shelf. Something about the cooling temperatures makes me want to wrap up in a blanket and start a new book, so thanks for the suggestions. Happy days!

dude! that is cool. "the Mountain of Too Much" exists here too. And I often like to bury my head in the sand when I think of how much I need to do. I like how this author approached it. Thanks for sharing :)

I just had to laugh. I finally realized that my issue of Quiet Mind has walked away and I went to my local bookstore this morning to order it, then came home and read your blog. I also really can't believe that you are reading Crossing to Safety-one of my all time favorite books!!! Did you realize that Wallace Stegner spent a lot of time in Oregon while he was growing up.
Looking forward to next weekend at the Art House. Doin' my homework along with my kids.
Breath!!!

If you enjoy Crossing to Safety, you MUST READ Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner. He is a personal favorite, and I believe Angle of Repose is among his finest. It also speaks to a theme I see running through your blog: finding that state of being where experience peace and balance -- though often in life we stumble and slide and climb our way out, we can come to our personal resting point, our own angle of repose (look up the scientific term). Definitely worth reading!

Thank you for this Ali.
Love the photo of the chair. Especially since I have the same chairs outside my front door.
Going to look into a couple of the books you've mentioned.
