Studio Friday : Inspiration.
Tags:Ah, inspiration.
I try really hard to live my life with my eyes wide open. Always on the lookout for something with the power to touch me, to light my fire, to make me want to write, create, record, photograph, laugh, cry, tell a story, etc.
Products (especially new ones) and everyday stuff definitely have the power to inspire me, but they also have the power to overwhelm. There is a fine balance between the two. I think that is why I cleaned off my board the other night - needing a fresh, clean slate and a bit of space between one thing and the next. The layers were getting to me.
Books are also big on my inspiration list. Right now I am just starting to read two books: The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp and Drawing From Life: The Journal as Art by Jennifer New. I like reading books about creativity, about new ways to think about life and the world. They have the power to get me seriously fired up. So much so that sometimes I can't let myself read before bed. I am also browsing through Alphabetica by Lynne Perrella. During my last trip I read The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion - interesting autobiographical look at a very hard time in her life.
I am inspired by laughter. By giggles. By sunlight. By words. By the feeling of paint on my fingertips. By looking through the lens.
As for holding on to inspiration once I find it, I try not to hold on too tight. I ride the wave. I take full advantage of the feeling, of the sensation; I revel in it. And when it is gone I don't hold my breath. I take a break. I breathe. I know it will come again. I am alive.

Just wanted to thank you for being on my list of "what inspires me."
A longtime Ali-blog lurker (lurker is such a dirty word...maybe just "watcher.")

Hi Ali,
I just have to say how much I love your blog. I check in daily and have never commented before, but since it looks like I'll be the first to comment today I thought I'd give it a whirl. I love the way you write, the pictures you post (the bulletin board today makes me happy), the way you view life, your honesty, creativity, and humor; and all the A's in your room, so fun. Thanks for giving me something to think about and inspire me pretty much daily! Thanks, Jill Stuart

Hi Ali. I was wondering what you do with all the inspiration that you take off your board? Do you scrapbook it or keep it in some sort of journal?? Thanks.

The Creative Habit is a wondeful book I keep going back to. Let me know what you think of it. I also really enjoyed Alphabetica...great inspiration. Have you seen True Colors, another art journal swap with many of the same artists? It's wonderfully inspiring..the best!!!

Can I just crawl inside your supply drawers and live there? Seriously, I won't make a mess. I can hand you things you think you have misplaced.
I really admire that you are interested in other peoples creative process rather than thinking yours is the only one. That fact that you share yours with us, is a neat gift. Thanks!
And how exciting on the veggies and your little dude?
My kindergartener is into Starfall.com, I don't know if SImon is interested yet, but check it out. Jacob and his class just eat it up!

Thank you Ali, for being so inspiring yourself! It is wonderful to find like minded free thinkers. It would be great if youp could come out with a book on what inspires you on a day to day basis.

Hey, Ali...
Who makes those library cards? Do they come with pockets? I love them!

I love that you post pictures of your surroundings....your collections. It's like candy for my eyes...all the textures and the colors are so delightful to just scour with my eyeballs. It's like 'Where's Waldo' for artists! :-)
You absolutely inspire. Thank you!

I draw inspiration from you and your blog. It's so neat to read how other people tap into their creativity - and especially people who love design and the entire process so much.
Thanks. Your words, pics and creativity are inspiring.

Ali, you take such great shots of your studio space and home. Have you seen this flickr group where people post photos of the "corners" of their homes? http://www.flickr.com/groups/the_nursery/ It's fun to see how people decorate and organize their every day living spaces.

ali:
you might think i am nuts.
right now, I think i'm nuts!
the little yellow lined post-it note on your bulletin board.
i think "hey, we use those here at work." upon further inspection "hey, that looks like my handwriting!!!"
did i ever mail you anything? did i ever send you a random post-it note? b/c with my creative sparks, anything is possible, including mailing perfect strangers post-it note messages!
if that little tidbit did not come from me, then something else is going on around us.
something bigger.
something big enough to make my heart skip a beat today at 4:32pm. hehe.
happy friday.
