I am amazed...
Tags:at the way that Simon has been talking since I got home from NZ/Australia. He is actually engaging in conversation, answering questions, asserting his opinion verbally. This is a huge difference even since before I left. Around here we like to speculate on just what it is that is making these changes...and yet, it is so hard to tell if and what therapies are helping the most. Always searching for something that will make a difference for him...
One of the things we have been doing differently with his treatment over the last month is the addition of vitamin B shots as recommended by our DAN doctor. (This is in addition to his special diet: gluten/casein free diet, his developmental preschool that includes occupational & speech therapy, and other vitamin supplements.)
Another thing we have noticed this last week is that he has been telling Chris not to “scare” him in the evenings since he has been home. In the past Chris would chase him up the stairs (as I carried him) when it was time to go to bed - he would giggle with glee and get all crazy. He wants none of that now and is in fact asking not to be scared (way more my style). Before this I had never heard him mention the word "scare," let alone put any meaning along with it.
Right now he is watching an animal video and saying things like, “that’s a good zebra” and “you are running” as the zebra runs by on the screen. This is a big change from just identifying the name of the animal in the past. So much more language...
Behaviorally I have also noticed a change. We went to our local outdoor pool yesterday and he did great waiting in line for the water slide - no pushing or whining as he had done earlier this summer. He also really seems to be listening & following instructions so much better than normal.
Maybe it is all because I have been gone and I can see things differently now. Maybe it is the shots. Maybe it is all the outdoor exercise and fresh air he got while visiting with grandma and grandpa. Maybe it is that he is just growing and it is his turn to "get" a bit more of the world we inhabit.
Whatever it is, it is good (except that he is crying right now about having some meat for lunch).

Way to go Simon!!!!
Ali- I am so happy to hear about Simon's progress...interested to also find out if those vit B shots helped in any way...but, whatever the case, it's all good!
Got the results from Porter's biopsies...no Celiacs (whew), however, only time and more test will tell what and how his FTT, diarrhea, and everything else came about.
sending you big hugs!

Oh yes...a little humor: did Simon happen to eat any 'vegamite' while in OZ? Or did Cathy give him Tam Tams?

New Simon?...The fruits of labor sowed with love and patience's, by Simon's devoted parents, along with the support team they have provided to him. That's my guess. =) Much happiness!

That is awesome, Ali! :) I love hearing that Simon's making progress, I have a nephew that is 4 years old and has autism. But you know what I keep thinking?? They have Autism, Autism does not have them. :)
Hugs! :)

firm believer in the "click" factor. eventually, all of the balls are moving in just the right motion, the therapies, the treatments, the modifications, the vitamins, the diet, the exercise, the weather, the kid, and when all of it moves just so; our kiddos can take off. An before they were just running and there wheels were spinning because they were carrying so much weight, now they are just running free and clear and can't believe themselves. Good for you all.

That is fantastic news Ali, I am so pleased for you and Simon.
Hmmm maybe it was that you took home some of our great Aussie spirit and it rubbed off on him, lol. I loved meeting you and thoroughly enjoyed all your classes that I took, you are an amazing, inspiring lady and I feel I have learnt much from you, I wish you the very best.
Take Care

What good news about Simon's progress. He may just be growning into himself in addition to all the good things you provide for him.

Its great.
Whatever the reasons... just is great.

Hi Ali,
It might just be a bit of a cognitive leap - we notice these in Lily - our 3 year old - she goes along for a while without any noticable gains and then - BAM - all of a sudden new words, ways of putting things across, understandings, behaviours, etc. Notone influence or another - just time!
Have you got smiley face bologna there in the states? It's a meat that Lily will eat. Scarily she bites out the eye blobs first - probably full of goodness knows what????
