Studio Friday : Artist Block
Tags:
This week's Studio Friday topic is about breaking free from Artist Block. Everyone gets to a point where they are just stuck, when the juices aren't flowing, when nothing seems to be coming together. I totally know this feeling. For me, the answer has always been to leave my creative space. To get away and out and do something entirely different. Being in a new environment tends to get me going again. There is something about freeing yourself from the project at hand, from the lists of things to do, even for just a short amount of time that allows the creative juices to start flowing again. Even if I literally can't leave or get away I will go into another room to simply let my eyes rest for a couple minutes from whatever it was that I had been engrossed in. I think the more frustrated you let yourself get the worse it all becomes. This last week my answer was to clean up my space. I needed a fresh look at my supplies (and in some cases actually needed to see what I really have - way too many piles). You can see other artists ideas about getting unblocked here. I especially liked this one and this one. What is your answer for getting over a block? Studio Friday also has a cool, full-of-info area called Articles + Advice. Check it out for even more inspiration. Also, I would like to include a question and answer section in my new AEzine. If you have a question for me send it to my email with NEWSLETTER QUESTION in the subject line.

Amen Ali-relax and release! Clean up or run a mile or two. Whaever works-I am all for it! See this is something that i must remind myself of daily. Life gets busy-obligation gets in the way and I suffer because I can't see clearly. Thanks for making me step back and see what matters.

this photo is so cool. love the curves.
whenever i'm stuck, i love to go through my digital photo gallery and convert them to black and white.
i am sooooo partial to black and white. they add that artsy edge to a scrapbook page.
and lately, i've been so inspired by Kristina Contes. That mini book she did about why she scrapbooks is just so cool.

Hi,
I am an elementary school counselor and would like your input on working with economically deprived families in my rural area with Autisitic children. Some resource suggestions and words of enncouregement for me to guide them. Alos, on a personal note, I am buying a new computer and would like to know what kind you enjoy using.

ha - we're on the same wavelength. I was apparently reorganizing my scrap space at the same time as you. Totally needed to know what I had & where to find...found more than one item that I'd purchased duplicates of - just in going through my rub-ons and stickers, forget all the rest of my stash!
My motivation, though, was to be able to "think" to do my homework for your classes coming up here in the middle of the month. I was feeling so muddled with work and everything that I couldn't even think clearly enough to do that.

It's so cool to know that even the best scrappers can have a block. When I get a block I put the project away and come back to it later. But your right you need a new fresh look at it instead of trying to finsh it and not liking the project. Thanks!!

Beautiful photo you posted. It's truely inspiring. I am tickled that you participated this week when Tine used my prompt :)
I agree. Leaving the studio and engaging in something else entirely is probably the best and only way to lift the block.
Thanks for sharing!

The get away, take a break technique to get rid of a block seems to be a common way and it's to effective too, if you let it go in your mind as well.

Hi Ali,
I LOOOOOVE the project you put together to house your mom's letters. I would like to create something similar and wondering about the "how to" of it. Did you find a book you could embellish, or did you put something together? Also, I am a big fan of the "Proof" book you made for the Latest Creating Keepsakes magazine and know you used chipboard but did you cut it to the size you used and shape? I find cutting chipboard pretty darn hard. Help please!
Thank you!
Christina

I have artist block right now. It is awful and terrible. Everything in my life seems to be not going well and at the same time I can not paint or draw. I have no inspiration. Can you elaborate on how to get out of artist block. Thanks.
