Tags:Ever look back over your photos to see similarities between different times? I like finding little goodies like these - doorway photos - they tell great individual stories and cool stories over a period of time. Here's one from this last week on the coast and one from last Easter:

Sometimes they are spontaneous and sometimes they become planned - you take a shot, you love it, you repeat it again in a different environment. I love seeing images that do this sort of thing over time. Here's a You Tube video that showcases this idea over time: Me: Girl takes pic of herself every day for three years (updated link). I can imagine tons of different ways this could play out in scrapbooking. Goes along great with the idea of an album in progress - one that will never be done until you are gone (or you stop creating). Love that idea of a that looks at something very specific over time. Maybe I could take a photo of Simon eating breakfast everyday - mundane but remarkably beautiful.
Lots of thoughts mulling around in my head today. The camera is in hand and I am ready.

Throughout the year when ever my girls have a special event or participate in something ( like their prom, ring dance ) or the first day of school I take a picture of them in front of the door in our foyer. I may have to go back and turn some of those pages into a mini album.

I once did a layout of time repeating itself too. I love how that happens.

After our hard drive crashed this week I just want to remind anyone who hasn't saved photos in one way or another to do so. Ali, you have been great about reminding us and it was one of those things I was going to get to ... only the last year and half didn't get done yet and now is lost. Seeing your great photos just reminds me and hopefully someone who hasn't will back up and save the heartache of losing photos. But I am telling myself ... it is ok - (I think) :)

it's been a tradition in my family for at least 20 years to take family pics at christmas in front of the same set of closet doors...it's fun to look back at the pics and see how everyone has changed...my mom did a scrapbook tribute to the "door pictures"!

That's a great idea, Ali. I am loving all the inspiration I'm finding on your blog and in the newsletter. One of my many goals over Christmas break is to make an art journal.

I'm not sure how many people will see this, but I just went to the dalai mama blog that Ali posted the link to the other day. You have to read it. I laughed so hard I have tears in my eyes. I had no idea that someone else may have children as strange and wonderful as mine, but her kids are a real hoot!

Love the photos, Ali :) And speaking of that video you linked...have you seen this one? It's a parody on the girl's video and is hilarious. :)

I love this concept, Ali! You need to do an article about this.

Since my son was born 2 1/2 years ago I have been taking "self portraits" of us - camera held at arm's length. It's really neat to see the changes in him (and to a lesser degree, in me), plus a lot of the angles are funky and sometimes one of our heads is cut off a bit. They're very 'come what may'. Some day, on an important anniversary (5 years?) I'll make it into a funky mini book. For now he watches 'us' on a slideshow in iPhoto. Cool.

we always took pictures of our girls in front of the door while they were growing up for first day of school. . .used first day of K with first day of senior year on a page.
oh to have taken more pics when they were growing up; that's my biggest advice to young moms. . .take pictures of the everyday!

earlier this year i took part in self-portrait challenge's (it was SPT then) of time and took a polaroid of myself drinking tea every single day the entire month of march. it was a very interesting experience. by the third or fourth day i was starting to shed the judgement. and using the polaroid was so different than the digital camera because i didn't want to "waste" film so i had to let go of waiting for the perfect picture. reading this tonight has inspired me to think about doing this again. maybe for the month of december...
as always, thanks for the inspiration ali. coming here always fills me up.

Another day of inspiration on the AE blog. How do you do it? ROCKING!
You know what I love about the 2 photos? To see how much Simon has grown. And that his stance hasnt changed much.
I love taking photos in the same place, at the same time of year, of the same person. But just as much, places can change too. Trees fall, buildings get renos, etc. Time marches on!!

This is a great idea....I've been doing this of my night table beside my bed. It captures the little toys that my kids leave, or a note my oldest has written, and of course all of my varying reading piles!! You can see my interests evolve and it's just an amazing thing to see.
I especially love those two of Simon in the doorway. I can totally see these with another future shot in a vertical photography series hanging on the wall in your house!

I take a photo of my kids by the front door each "first day of school". My mom did the same. I can not only see their growth, but I can also tell where we were living at the time (14 moves over the years). With 5 kids to document, it helps to have those visual clues to the where and when. But my favorite part of this project is watching their little hands on the doorknobs. They start out just above the head and as the years go by they get lower and lower until they're at the waist or below. Love that.

Cool! I'll have to go through some pics and see the similarities I have. Thanks.
