Autism on The View.
Tags:Right now I am watching The View. Normally I don't watch TV during the day but some kind people sent me emails letting me know that todays topic is autism.
As many of you know, this is a super emotional issue for me and watching is stirring up all those emotions. Listening to Toni Braxton talk about her son being diagnosed was like listening to myself tell the story of our journey. This is such a good thing they are doing - talking about it, bringing it even more out in the open. I just know there are parents out there watching today who are being introduced for the first time, who now may be questioning their own child's behavior, who may be crying as they watch. My heart goes out to those parents. And in the same moment I am excited for them that they may be able to help their children find their own special place in the world.
These kids are so, so amazing.

Saw the show. Thought of Simon.
There is a family that has an autistic 1st grader that lives a few doors down from us. I love how they encourage her to play outside with all of the kids. It is wonderful for her, but it is a such blessing for my kids, as well.

The abc website has selected clips of the show on Autism.
There is a Link to the footage on the left hand side of the page.

we don't have this program here but I am amazed when something here is on about autism and people call me to tell me so I can watch it, sometimes people who I hardly know.
Alec has touched so many hearts, this is a hard journey but so rewarding seeing him grow and develop. I do find it hard to watch programs now as it stirs so much emotion up, I've tried to give up re-living what I as I see as my mistakes from before we realised Alec had autism and try and focus on what I can do now and be his advocate, yes he is different but he amazes me every day.

Ali,
You were on my mind. I saw the show, too, and my wish was for more information. It seemed to be over too soon and too "surface". I'm glad they talked about it and hope to see more on-air conversation about Autism. Take care.

we are struggling with some huge issues with Madison right now...I am not sure if emotionally I could have watched it anyway, but I know I need to.

So glad you were able to catch it. I didn't know based on the time zones if it was airing the same time as it was on here.
I teared up several times, which was kind of out of place, since I was watching it from my desk at work.

I don't normally watch TV either but a friend told me about it too. I'm in the same shoes as you. I was emotional. I wonder if that feeling will ever go away? I had never seen Temple Gradin before. She was very interesting. There is hope! I applaud all the work you are doing to raise awareness Ali. Continue the great work!

Bummer... I didn't get to watch because I was at work. I would have loved to see it!
I am a teacher for five awesome kiddos with autism. My job is SO challenging and SO rewarding at the same time. It's funny because one of my students looks so much like Simon! Thank you Ali for using your awesome blog not just to inspire us with your life art, but also to increase awareness about this important issue. My hope is to someday be able to tell people that I am an autism teacher without ever having to answer the question "What's that?"
Have a great day :)

So glad that you got to watch it....it brought tears to my eyes many times....reminded me of my first job (working at a developmental disabilities center....in a preschool autistic classroom)....those kids amazed me every day....I've worked with many autistic children in the past few years....the show did a great job of bringing autism out to the public...I really feel SO many people are unaware.

I didn't see The View but I was watching VH1 and they were talking about a motorcycle that is being auctioned off for Cure Autism Now and it has been signed by all sorts of rock stars (Neil Schon of Journey and Joe Elliot of Def Leppard are at least two of them). That was really cool, I thought of you as soon as they started talking about it.

Hi Ali, In my efforts to understand more about Autism (and to understand my son) I found a few websites that might interest you. They are written by autistic adults who write about what it is to be autistic.
http://ballastexistenz.autistics.org/
http://mjane.zolaweb.com/ http://members.aol.com/redrock35/LittleGirlinRED.html.html
http://www.autism-hub.co.uk/
And you should check out Amanda Biggs' video on youtube,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnylM1hI2jc
it will make you cry but it will also give you a small understanding of the peculiar behavior of people with autism. They may have a different language, we just need to try to understand it more.
Peace to you.

You all seem to be much more 'up to date' about these kinds of programmes than I am - how did you know it was going to be on in advance?
How can I get to see it after the event?
Do they repeat these kinds of programmes?
Best wishes

I live in the Netherlands so I just saw some highlights of The View on the website of ABC. Very interesting show! It was the first time I saw Temple Grandin. Wow, so great to see what has become of her! When my son was diagnosed with PDD in 1999, one of the first articles I read about autism was written by her and it helped me understand a little bit more about all the sensory problems my son was having.
And you Ali, keep on telling about autism and your awesome son Simon!
(sorry, for my poor English)

Ali ... I do not think I've ever posted a comment on your blog before today ... but I felt like I should. The other day I was sitting there watching The View and they said they were going to devote the entire hour to autism ... the first people that came to my mind were you, Simon and Chris. I wondered ... is Ali watching ... does she know about this show today? I'm so glad you did. It was a wonderful show. Toni Braxton ... so brave. The families and children ... so brave. Thank you for sharing your brave story with us daily.
