Edwards' Family Field Trip
Tags:We were up and out early this morning for a tour of Simon's kindergarten.
WOW.Kindergarten. Can hardly believe that is coming up next.
Simon will be in a full-day kindergarten program at one of the local elementary schools (full day kindergarten is not the norm in Oregon - there are maybe three schools in our area that offer full day programs).
He will participate in the "regular" room with kids in the morning
(including the bulk of academics, lunch, recess, etc ) and then spend a
couple hours in the afternoon in a classroom focused on language,
social skills, etc. Full day around here is basically 8am to 1:30pm.
Simon was a superstar. He was excited once we got in the door - I think he could sense this was going to be an ok place (as soon as we clarified more than a couple times that he did not have to say "goodbye" to mommy and daddy at this school today). We met his special ed teacher and she showed us all around the school and told us more about the program: the schedule, the teachers, the classrooms, etc. We visited the kindergarten room, said hi to his teacher & the kids, checked out the cubbies, the tables, the globes ("earths"), the "storybooks,"etc. Much of it was set up just like his current classroom which will definitely help with the transition.
Simon was super chatty throughout the tour. He especially loved the blocks of color on the tile floor ("just like a rainbow"), the library, and a big fish tank in the lobby. When the teacher asked him if he wanted to see the lunch room he responded with a very enthusiastic "yeah."
My first impression of this school: it is ALIVE.
It has been years and years since I have been in an elementary school, but man, this place was full of color and kids and numbers and books and windows (and light) and LIFE. There were kids and teachers all over the place but it was not chaotic, nor was it closed off and sterile.
It felt progressive and open and inclusive and happy. And I like that.
As I walked through I was thinking to myself how very thankful I am for the early intervention services that Simon has received over the last few years. They have been instrumental in getting him ready to head to kindergarten. He understands the basics of a classroom and picture schedules and snack/lunch time and play time. And he is working hard everyday on interacting with the other kids (the social and the language are probably his two biggest issues).
I am so excited for him - especially after visiting the school today and seeing his response. I know it will be a big transition, but man, what a ride.
A couple other things on this Monday morning:
1. Have you seen Meet The Robinson's yet? When Paolo was here we took Simon and it was AWESOME. Great movie, great message. All about "keep moving forward." Totally an underrated, delightful gem for adults as well as kids.
2. Daily schedule update. After my post yesterday I worked on making one up for myself on a spreadsheet - talk about a TASK. Have you ever sat down and really written out everything you do every day (or things that come up each week) and tried to organize it into some sort of structured system? I realized just how long it has been since I wrote all my personal tasks (both life & work together on one document) - seeing it on my computer screen was a quite an awakening. I feel a bit more confident as I move forward today that I am setting myself up for success.

WOW...is RIGHT ON GIRL! My little (big) Lukas will starting kindergarten next year as well. What an amazing transition it is for our boys - and for US! I had so many similar feelings while visiting Lukas' new school. I just can't wait to see what the new school year will bring and what exciting new things our kids will do. As for the TASKs, WOW again, I can't even begin to aprw my brain around that right now. I would really love to sit down and write out all I want to do with life and prioritize it. At the very least it would shed light on what's important RIGHT NOW. Have a great day/week! Marcia

I am so excited for you all! Kindergarten! I can't believe it is here already! Love your idea about making a list of everything I do during the day - I am sure I would be overwhelmed! Thanks for letting me inside your day once again. God bless. :)

yeah, Simon! Kindergarten has been such a positive experience for Jake that we're doing it another year...hee hee...with Jake's social and language issues and the fact that he's a young 5 (turned 5 the day before school started) we just felt it was going to be a good thing to have him experience it another year. Yeah for progressive education and early intervention for sure!! Kristen :-)

*huge high five* to Simon!
Ali, I love following your S-man stories and your family's adventures.
Seriously- a fish tank!?! How cool.
My Mom used to work in the daycare in my high school and was the special ed person. It amazes me how kids of any age, on any spectrum, thrive when they feel comfortable enough to be free and 'out there' and, like you said, ALIVE. Cultivating that sense of belonging in a school is so, so important. Yay for you guys for finding it!

Sounds like Simon is ready to move on. Yea! Hope you and Chris plan something for yourselves the first day of school. I just did that for the second and last time, in August, and it was hard.
I enjoy your blog so much and I hate to write a contradictory message for my first time to comment, but I thought the Robinson movie message about adoption was very misleading and negative. My children are adopted so I am hypersensitive as to how adotion is handled. The movie perpetuated an abandonment theme - birthmother leaving infant in a secret manner and in the dark - actually many birth parents are active participants in an adoptive placement. Also, the movie portrayed that the adoptee must sell himself to adoptive parents - the movie character had over 100 failed interviews with prospective parents - actually it is the parents who must show they are worthy of the placement not the child. The child is not a product for sale. Overall a very negative light for adoption, I thought.

So happy for you all. I just want to second what another commentor wrote. I have a lovely friend who takes the first day of school off work every year with her husband. They get everyone settled in school and then take the day together, breakfast, the newspaper, coffee, the whole nine yards. Their own little celebration of starting a new school year - we certainly need all the celebrations we can get!

We mostly liked Meet the Robinsons too, but I thought I'd let you know that many members of the adoption community are quite distressed and the representation of various parts of the adoption process.

as a teacher, it made my heart smile knowing simon will attend a school that is alive. kids (and teachers) grow there...so we should expect such a place to be full of life, energy, learning, and of course, a place to be creative! thankfully, teacher can be creative at school too. seriously, there are few jobs that i can think of where i can buy every color of sharpie and crayola marker and feel that it is COMPLETELY necessary. yea for simon as he starts to BLOOM! I bet in a year his progress will be off the charts!

Wow...Simon starting Kindergarten already?? Sounds like he's really progressing which is so awesome...my nephew (who is also autistic) blossomed after going to school full time. I pray that Simon blossoms as well.
Also, I just wanted to say that I just received your Everyday Beauty kit...looks awesome and I can't wait to "cyberplay" with you on Saturday!

This is great news for everyone! I'm currently going through the same thing for my daughter. Kindergarten is a huge step but I think it will be so much fun when all the children settle into their "routines". We are very excited for Simon and we wish him all the best for the upcoming school year!

Your post today brightened my day. How exciting for Simon and you both! Yay - kindergarten! I still remember my first day and meeting some of my first friends. What fun for him. So happy for you all.
And good for you, getting your tasks in order. I SOOOOOO need to do that...

I think I am afraid of listing all that I do in one place. Because what if I look at the list and think:
"Oh gosh, that's too much. I can't do it."
But if I don't list it, it's all very amorphous and every time I accomplish something I can say, "Yeah! I did it!"
So, I'm glued to your process, Ali.
Go, Ali!

I thought this month would never come for me when my kids started kindergarten 22 years ago..and now one finishes college at the end of next month and the other graduates from hs mid-June....too fast, too fast. I am so glad I have the scrapping to do so it doesn't feel so over and done with! Lucky you... just starting out!!
