I totally found this fascinating. One of my favorite things about living in NY was when I would hear GOOD street musicians. Once coming out of the Subway, I heard a group of men singing - in harmony - that song that goes "I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes..." ("It's written on the wind" I think it's called...) and I just still havent' forgotten that. It was amazing.
But to hear JOSH BELL? In a metro station?? Wow. I think I would've passed out. Such an amazing commentary on the state of our 'busyness'.
Thanks for this. I included the link in my blog today, too. Great (if a little painful) reminder to slow down, notice, and take in what the day brings. I needed it!
OMG, you are not going to believe this. I just realized that I went to the article and read the bulk of the story, but never clicked on the video to hear Joshua Bell's performance. Not even the short version. So I went back and listened to that, and only then did I notice a link where I could have heard the entire thing! Ironically, the whole time I was reading the article, I was in complete disbelief that people didn't stop and was convinced in my own head that I would have. Talk about a wake-up call!
Ali, thanks for posting this. I have a project where I leave art in public places for others to find, I have been leaving something once a week, on Tuesdays, since last september. I was surprised on how people don't seem to notice the art, they just look past it, even if it's in front of their eyes, even if it has a note that says, "please read me and keep me" It seems we are too busy to just look around us.
you can see the art I have left, here:

Thanks, Ali. I'd like to think that I WOULD have stopped, but I'm as guilty of tunnel vision as the next person. I've got to dig out my copy of Koyaanisqatsi and watch it again. Mind boggling!
