Weekend Creative : February #2 : punch collage
Tags:This weekend's project is inspired by Margaret's heart collage (just right for Valentine's Day) and Australian artist Catherine Swan's beautiful paper butterflies (read more of her story + see the size of her art here). I originally discovered Catherine's work through Oh Joy.
Repetition is one of my most favorite principles in design and punches are one of my favorite products. I use punches to create repetition all the time when creating scrapbook layouts + minibooks (especially using that square Giga punch). This new little collage will be replacing my holiday collage that has been above my sink since November (will be storing the collage with my holiday stuff + will pull it out and stick it back in the frame for next year).
This collage was created using a Martha Stewart butterfly punch and a variety of different scraps of paper: junk mail, scrapbook paper, pages from old books, etc. My white sheet of background cardstock was cut to 10x8 to fit into the mat of the black frame. I used tiny foam dots as adhesive. There's no real method to choosing which papers to use - I tend to go for a balance between text, lines, dots, etc.
The basic prompt: create a collage (or a scrapbook page) using two things (1) a punch of some sort and (2) the principle of repetition to bring it all together. Here's some additional punch shapes if you are looking for something to add to your collection: heart, star, postage stamp.
Have a great weekend!

I came by your page and am so impressed with your pages, and your organization. I have been doing scrapbooking off and on. My big concern is having a billion albums that are just pictures...but you inspire me with your rehashing of your albums.
I intended to show you some origami quilting that would make nice additions to scrapbooking...it would be great to see what you come up with. Take a look.

Hi Ali,
I really love this idea! And so does my sister! I made one frame for her, and the other day made another smaller one for me. They are so fun to make and I love going through all my old magazines looking for fun colors and designs. I've gotten quite a few compliments, and have of course referred everyone to your site as the source. I wanted to ask you if you would mind if I made more of these to sell? Since this is your idea I don't want to steal it, but they are so fun to make, and unfortunately I don't think I could get away with hanging these all over my house. ;) I want to ask for your permission, and if you would rather that I didn't sell them I totally understand. Just thought I'd check. Thanks for all the great ideas and tips! I love your site! :)
Thanks,
Diane

Thank you so much for the inspiration!

Thanks for the inspiration. I ran out and bought the punch, but didn't realize that it was so small. So, I set to work to make a much bigger version, each one hand cut.
I used Amy Butler scrap book paper and it turned out lovely. You can see it here... http://junkinjunky.blogspot.com/2010/02/knock-off-art-paper-butterflies.html

Public service announcement, although I'm commenting over two years late:
I looked everywhere for a frame that would work for this. It needs to be deep enough so the butterflies won't be pressed up against the glass, because that spoils the look a little bit.
I finally found what I was looking for at Michaels. They have a bunch of frames that are double-matted like the one in Ali's example, with lots of space between the glass and the display.
