Three Things : Fabric (& a giveaway)

One of my favorite parts of my recent creativity travel was working with fabric in my projects. I have been playing with bits of it with my sewing machine and starting to collect small pieces here and there (haven't gotten into any clothes sewing yet).
Here's a fabric layout I made in Christina Lazar Schuler's class at Inspired called Textile Anthology (check her Etsy store for available kits):
She talked about making an entire album of fabric pages (the one above is 8x8). I like that idea and I also love that this sort of page can just go in my regular albums as well (put it into a page protector or add grommets to fit to your album rings).
So why fabric? I like to think of it in the same way I think of pattern paper - a decoration. A bit of color. The cool thing about fabric is that it also lends texture to your project. We can all use a bit more texture in our lives. Fabric can be added to a layout with adhesive or stitched on by hand (I actually really liked the process of hand-stitching the photo on the layout above) or with a machine (quick and easy). Try using it in place of patterned paper on your next project. It's also especially great for covering chipboard albums.
Currently I am storing my fabric pieces in my metal shelf:
Here are three of my favorite sites for checking out fabric include Sew Mama Sew (love searching by color), Purl Soho (especially loving their contemporary collection), and Repodepot. You can also search etsy for vintage fabric sellers like Shabby Vintage Mom who has some cute bundles of vintage fabrics.
The giveaway today is for Donna Downey's newest book Fabric Scrapbooking. It's very much a project-based book with step by step instructions and supply lists to walk you through each project.
To enter the giveaway simply leave a comment below. I will close comments and pick a winner on Wednesday night around 7pm (April 23).

Working with fabric is so dear to my heart b/c my Grandmother & my Mom are both incredible & professional seamstresses. I can never remember a time when my sisters & I did not have hand-sewn clothing as children. Now, my mom sews for her 7 (soon to be 8) grandchildren; spring dresses, quilts, sweatshirts with embroidery on them. My kids truly treasure these pieces of Art from their "Ma". The touch & feel of fabric will be forever etched in my mind as a wonderful memory of my passing Grandmother and of my Mom, who continues to create these lasting treasures today.

This would be perfect! I have been looking at this book because I would love a way to pull my quilting and scrapbooking together.
I am having quite a bit of trouble getting started on pages, but I have no problem cutting up fabric, which doesn't entirely make sense, I know. Maybe this book would show me how to pull everything together in a way that I could start working on my photo stash too.

I need more fabric like I need a hole in the head, and I had vowed to not buy any new fabric until July, but I couldn't resist that Alexander Henry print. And it was lonely in my cart. Oh well! Maybe I'll win an awesome book to make up for my lack of self control.

I have always loved fabric - the feel, the colors, the patterns - and wanted a way to incorporate it into my scraping, so this book would be perfect for me to learn how to do that! Thanks for offering up such a fun treat! :-)

I am a quilter, sewer (learning how to make my own clothes), and scrapbooker. I would love to learn how to combine those hobbies, and Donna's book would be a great tool to help me get started! I would be so grateful!

I love the layout you did (I always do!).
I've also been looking for a shelf like yours. Did you buy it new or resale?
Thanks for sharing!

Okay, honestly, fabric scares the heck out of me... but this is beautiful and I'm willing to try. I did find three little swatches in my craft stash (cleaning up my room) so I saved them but I'm not sure what to do with them... maybe I will get brave soon, would love Donna's book for ideas!

How ironic that you are talking about this at the moment. We are in the process of cleaning out my grandmother's house and getting it ready for an "estate sale" in a couple of weeks. She was quite the seamstress and make quilts and afghans and such. So, she has TONS of fabric!!! My mom and I are debating on different pieces to keep and/or give away. We have a whole "fabric" room for the sale! You won't believe it! I can send pictures!
I hope I win the book. It sounds awesome!
Thanks,
Karmen

My favorite thing to do with fabric is to use it on covers for my mini books!
