Three Things : Fabric (& a giveaway)

One of my favorite parts of my recent creativity travel was working with fabric in my projects. I have been playing with bits of it with my sewing machine and starting to collect small pieces here and there (haven't gotten into any clothes sewing yet).
Here's a fabric layout I made in Christina Lazar Schuler's class at Inspired called Textile Anthology (check her Etsy store for available kits):
She talked about making an entire album of fabric pages (the one above is 8x8). I like that idea and I also love that this sort of page can just go in my regular albums as well (put it into a page protector or add grommets to fit to your album rings).
So why fabric? I like to think of it in the same way I think of pattern paper - a decoration. A bit of color. The cool thing about fabric is that it also lends texture to your project. We can all use a bit more texture in our lives. Fabric can be added to a layout with adhesive or stitched on by hand (I actually really liked the process of hand-stitching the photo on the layout above) or with a machine (quick and easy). Try using it in place of patterned paper on your next project. It's also especially great for covering chipboard albums.
Currently I am storing my fabric pieces in my metal shelf:
Here are three of my favorite sites for checking out fabric include Sew Mama Sew (love searching by color), Purl Soho (especially loving their contemporary collection), and Repodepot. You can also search etsy for vintage fabric sellers like Shabby Vintage Mom who has some cute bundles of vintage fabrics.
The giveaway today is for Donna Downey's newest book Fabric Scrapbooking. It's very much a project-based book with step by step instructions and supply lists to walk you through each project.
To enter the giveaway simply leave a comment below. I will close comments and pick a winner on Wednesday night around 7pm (April 23).

Like some of the others, fabric SCARES me! I love what others can do but don't have the nerve to try it myself!! I think I need this book to give me a serious kick in the backside to just TRY it!

I'm always so scared to try things like this. The book might just be the thing to put me over the edge to try it.

i have used fabric on my layouts before. in fact, i did a layout of my dad with photos of him in his boy scout uniform. my mom gave me one of his shirts and i cut it up and used it in my 2 page layout. one of the pockets even held lyrics to a song that makes me think of him in heaven. i used the shoulder plackets, the buttons and all of the patches. it was an amazing layout.
would love to see donna's new book and more fabric layouts from you. thanks ali!!

I love Donna's Books. I own the first 3 books of the series and I am actually looking for the other 2 books. I have a sewing machine that I bought just to scrapbook and I think I will use more if I had the fabric book. Thank you Ali for this opportunity.

I would love this book. I've wanted to do a fabric scrapbook, as long as you don't need a sewing machine.

Hi, I've been planning to do more with fabric for a long time, but I only used it once for an album cover that's still not finished (it has been waiting in the closet for a long time). I've been curious about Donna's book since I read it was coming out, I think I'll buy it anyway. I really like reading your blog, I liked the book you made in Tena's and Kal's class, thanks for the inspiration!

I love using fabric on my pages -- sometimes have a hard time completing them without it. I have been trying to resist buying new books but after seeing a few teasers here and there for Donna's book, I am convinced it needs a spot on my bookshelf. I am looking forward to seeing more fabric in your work too -- love what I've seen so far!
