Three Things : Fabric (& a giveaway)

One of my favorite parts of my recent creativity travel was working with fabric in my projects. I have been playing with bits of it with my sewing machine and starting to collect small pieces here and there (haven't gotten into any clothes sewing yet).
Here's a fabric layout I made in Christina Lazar Schuler's class at Inspired called Textile Anthology (check her Etsy store for available kits):
She talked about making an entire album of fabric pages (the one above is 8x8). I like that idea and I also love that this sort of page can just go in my regular albums as well (put it into a page protector or add grommets to fit to your album rings).
So why fabric? I like to think of it in the same way I think of pattern paper - a decoration. A bit of color. The cool thing about fabric is that it also lends texture to your project. We can all use a bit more texture in our lives. Fabric can be added to a layout with adhesive or stitched on by hand (I actually really liked the process of hand-stitching the photo on the layout above) or with a machine (quick and easy). Try using it in place of patterned paper on your next project. It's also especially great for covering chipboard albums.
Currently I am storing my fabric pieces in my metal shelf:
Here are three of my favorite sites for checking out fabric include Sew Mama Sew (love searching by color), Purl Soho (especially loving their contemporary collection), and Repodepot. You can also search etsy for vintage fabric sellers like Shabby Vintage Mom who has some cute bundles of vintage fabrics.
The giveaway today is for Donna Downey's newest book Fabric Scrapbooking. It's very much a project-based book with step by step instructions and supply lists to walk you through each project.
To enter the giveaway simply leave a comment below. I will close comments and pick a winner on Wednesday night around 7pm (April 23).

I really like the hand-stitching on your page. You're right. We all could use a little bit more texture in our lives!

I love what you did on your lay out. I hope I win this little book. I have a bunch of fabrics lying around (well that is neatly tucked away in a drawer right beside my scrapdesk), but I cannot put myself to using them. That reminds me: a couple of years ago it took me three nights in a row to finally cut some patterned paper to pieces for my first lay out. So I will get to it, but every little help is sooooooooo welcome!

I've been looking at fabric lately, but if I collect it like I've collected paper I'll be in real trouble on space.
I've been thinking about trying quilting but am not sure I can afford another obsession like scrapbooking.

I too love using fabric on a scrapbook page and am fortunate to have a space where I can leave my sewing machine out all the time... and yet I've just realised I can't remember the last time I did... so thanks for the inspiration I know what I'll be doing later on given the time, by our newish little person!

I love the idea of incorporating the fabric pages into your current album - I love the look of fabric, but was overwhelmed by making an ENTIRE fabric album! I can't wait to check out Donna's new book...she is so inspiring!

Ali, I think you're inspiring... the way you analyze things. I love to read your thoughts because they make me question and reevaluate what I tend to overlook. Such as if I'm taking simple routines for granted. I feel so blessed that I should be so thankful to have routines. I love how you're not afraid to be different, be YOU, and enjoy yourself in the process. thank you for being you and helping me stop and take time to smell the roses and enjoy LIFE!

Hey Ali,
I have such a love affair with fabric (and cupboards full) but never actually put it on a page. You have inspired me to have a go. I would love to see what Donna has done with it in her book so count me in. Glad to see that you had a great time being a student again for a change.
