Three Things : Fabric (& a giveaway)

One of my favorite parts of my recent creativity travel was working with fabric in my projects. I have been playing with bits of it with my sewing machine and starting to collect small pieces here and there (haven't gotten into any clothes sewing yet).
Here's a fabric layout I made in Christina Lazar Schuler's class at Inspired called Textile Anthology (check her Etsy store for available kits):
She talked about making an entire album of fabric pages (the one above is 8x8). I like that idea and I also love that this sort of page can just go in my regular albums as well (put it into a page protector or add grommets to fit to your album rings).
So why fabric? I like to think of it in the same way I think of pattern paper - a decoration. A bit of color. The cool thing about fabric is that it also lends texture to your project. We can all use a bit more texture in our lives. Fabric can be added to a layout with adhesive or stitched on by hand (I actually really liked the process of hand-stitching the photo on the layout above) or with a machine (quick and easy). Try using it in place of patterned paper on your next project. It's also especially great for covering chipboard albums.
Currently I am storing my fabric pieces in my metal shelf:
Here are three of my favorite sites for checking out fabric include Sew Mama Sew (love searching by color), Purl Soho (especially loving their contemporary collection), and Repodepot. You can also search etsy for vintage fabric sellers like Shabby Vintage Mom who has some cute bundles of vintage fabrics.
The giveaway today is for Donna Downey's newest book Fabric Scrapbooking. It's very much a project-based book with step by step instructions and supply lists to walk you through each project.
To enter the giveaway simply leave a comment below. I will close comments and pick a winner on Wednesday night around 7pm (April 23).

I love that fabric you posted pics of. I will have to go check out those ETSY shops. Also, Donna's book is on my 'to purchase' list!

I just started embroidering again after picking up Amanda Soule's book The Creative Family. I had forgotten how much I loved to hand sew. Well, for projects not mending! :)

Wow, creating with fabric has never been my calling but I often tell my friends that in another life I want to be a either a fiber artist or design fabric (like an engineer). I especially like plaids and only wanted plaid dresses when I was a little girl (no frills for me, please, much to my mother's chagrin) - did I know about my Scot's heritage even then? In some ways when I mix florals, stripes and other things together on a scrapbook page it seems akin to creating with fabric. Such is life!

Ooooh the thought of mixing vintage fabric into modern layouts just sparks my imagination. Or, a way to accentuate era photos. Can't wait to check to book out and have a reason to dig my sewing machine out of the closet. (yep, no handstitching for me) I love patterned paper & this is yet another way to become an addict - especially at flea markets!

I've dabbled a bit in the fabric arts, but never used it on a layout. Now that I'm trying to leave a smaller carbon footprint, I find that I use more things made from fabric. I'd love to try it on more than album covers!

Well... I have the sewing machine, and the fabric... I'm just not sure how to transform this into a scrapbook page. Maybe Donna's ideas will help.
Love visiting and reading your blog.

Ali, I could really use Donna's book. I recently "rescued" a bunch of fabric samples from my neighbor's house. Her husband works in the furniture industry, and these decorator fabrics were headed for the trash heap. The colors are beautiful and the textures are rich; I just need to figure out how to use them. I imagine Donna's book would teach me just what I need to know.
Thanks for the opportunity to win!

The fabric projects look really neat. I'm wondering if my mom will let me raid her fabric stash of 30 years. :)
