Three Things : Fabric (& a giveaway)

One of my favorite parts of my recent creativity travel was working with fabric in my projects. I have been playing with bits of it with my sewing machine and starting to collect small pieces here and there (haven't gotten into any clothes sewing yet).
Here's a fabric layout I made in Christina Lazar Schuler's class at Inspired called Textile Anthology (check her Etsy store for available kits):
She talked about making an entire album of fabric pages (the one above is 8x8). I like that idea and I also love that this sort of page can just go in my regular albums as well (put it into a page protector or add grommets to fit to your album rings).
So why fabric? I like to think of it in the same way I think of pattern paper - a decoration. A bit of color. The cool thing about fabric is that it also lends texture to your project. We can all use a bit more texture in our lives. Fabric can be added to a layout with adhesive or stitched on by hand (I actually really liked the process of hand-stitching the photo on the layout above) or with a machine (quick and easy). Try using it in place of patterned paper on your next project. It's also especially great for covering chipboard albums.

Here are three of my favorite sites for checking out fabric include Sew Mama Sew (love searching by color), Purl Soho (especially loving their contemporary collection), and Repodepot. You can also search etsy for vintage fabric sellers like Shabby Vintage Mom who has some cute bundles of vintage fabrics.

I love fabric! I still have tons of fabric from my attempt at quilting, lol :) I'm going to pull out a few swatches and try some fabric scrapping. Thanks for the constant inspiration.

Ali, I LOVE working with fabric! I have even printed my pictures on "canvas" paper & used it on my layouts. I love the look of the flared edges & the texture it lends to the page. It satisfies the eye & the touchy-feely sense. Plus, it also gives me an excuse to re-use my children's worn-out (non-donatable) clothes. Like the pockets or buttons or collars!

Ali, I have the TWIN to your sewing machine! Your machine looks like a Touch & Sew Singer. Is that right? I love it! It is still going strong, even afer 30+ years The only thing I have a hard time finding is the bobbins. I think they are phasing them out. I use to find them easily, but not so much anymore.

I have seen more layouts lately with fabric. I recently went to a weekend crop and there was a lady that brought her book that she made of just fabric layouts. They were so neat. . . I just wish I had held on to all those scraps of fabric I just cleaned out 6 months ago and gave away. Oh, well, there is plenty new stuff out there!

Love your blog. I've been wanting to add fabric to my layouts for some time -- and even bought some great thread at Target on sale. It was 4 great vintagey colors in small plastic bubbles with a cutter on top of each bubble. Perfect for quick & simple embroidery. I've yet to use them though -- this is a great inspiration to pull them out and get to stitching!
