Three Things : Lines (and a Designer Digitals giveaway)
Tags:One of the easiest ways I have found to add journaling to my projects is to incorporate products that include lines just waiting for words. They invite words.
[ Or I can always just pull out the pen + ruler and get those lines on there myself. Whatever is least complicated at the moment tends to be my choice. ]
Here's a look at some of my favorite products that showcase the simple beauty of lines:
Karen Russell Narratives Scalloped Lined Paper : Probably one of my all time favorite lined papers (next to the old Making Memories Ledger paper). I love that bit of scallop around the edge.
Technique Tuesday's Storyteller's Ledger Stamp : A great stamp for jotting down information and telling bits of a story on layouts, cards, minibooks, etc. Completely versatile.
Luxe Simple Lined Double-Sided Paper : Quickly becoming a favorite, this lined paper is a part of Luxe's Simply Luxe line (essentially lines + dots). Check out the grid, ledger, and pinstriped verisions as well.
Mug Memo Notebook from Fishs Eddy : This mug inspired the line theme this week. Such a happy mug. And watch out for lots of other cool things in this shop. Check out the other memo/line-inspired mugs and trays here.
In addition to Three Things today I am exicted to offer a giveaway of my first collection of layered templates and brushes from Designer Digitals. Leave a comment below with your favorite tip for getting words down on your projects (and not leaving them blank for a "someday-down-the-road-I-will-add-the-journaling"). A winner will be drawn at 5pm Pacific on Wednesday.
[ Three Things is a weekly product series : check out the archives here. ]

I keep a notebook near my computer. When I am uploading pics either into the laptop or online, I have a couple minutes to jot notes down about those photos to use for journaling later.

after i've figured out how i want my layout to be, and basically completed it, i'll print off my journaling onto matching paper (part of the figuring process). it helps that i know the date of the pictures, and i normaly journal about the emotions or memories that the pictures give me as i'm working with them. i'd like to, but have allowed time for keeping notes, so i have to go by this for now. thanks for everything you do Ali!

I find a stress-less way to add journaling is to create a border with your story; either around an embellishment, a photo or around the entire layout.
Thanks for the giveaway, Ali!

I have stacks of pages that need journaling on them. It is the one thing that completely stops me from completing a page. I hate breaking out the computer, typing words and then cutting them into strips or whatever. My best advice is like exercise-just do it, and when you are really stuck, just use your handwriting. You may hate your handwriting, but it is part of who you are.

On vacations I take a journal with me and journal as we go - start the day with a cup of coffee and some quiet time to journal. Normal stuff I tried to jot it down on the closest computer - home or work and then email home if need be. Then when I get around to scrapping the event I have the journaling already done without having to remember what happened.
Love the lined paper and the mug. Thanks for all the great insights and challenges.

Not loving my handwritting, I am into hiding my hand written journaling on tags with pulls on the front. I even slit my page protectors so that the kids have access!

The best way for me to keep getting words down is to just look at my little girl and think of how much I want her to know when she gets older and it keeps me writing. Plus, I also think about how much I have forgotten since she was born and that's a big motivator too!

I have 2 tips-
First, journal often, so that when you are ready to put it on a page, it's already there.
Second, it's so much fun to add text to a picture. I really enjoy adding to photos that way!

I start with the story and then look for pictures. Since I switched to digital scrapbooking, I am not afraid of journaling anymore - I find there is always enough room for the story. :-)

A lot of my journaling comes from my blog,... so often times the journaling is the only thing I'm sure of for my layouts.
Thanks,
Liz

I love to journal as things are happening. I do this a couple of ways depending on where I am. If on vacation, a pages document is a quick way to keep up or in the notes section for that particular day in ical. If we are at home, I will "blog" that event adding pictures as they are proofed. I won't post the entry until it's complete. Thanks for all you share!

Thanks for the chance to win!! I love DD.
Here's what I do. My first step is always to pick the photos and when I do that I am thinking mostly about emotions of the photo. Then I try to incorporate the 5ws and H (Who what when, where why and how) into the journalling. When I'm at the journalling part of my Lo, i look at the lo and try to feel what is needed. Does it need a story or a summary and I always try to keep in mind what are my kids going to want to know 10-20 years from now.
Gosh, I hope that was what you meant!
Thanks again!

I have a basket with journalling cards in them. Then, I think about what I would tell a stranger while looking at the layout...what's the first thing I think about? That's what I write down. :)

I am a newbie scrapper. I am attempting to do both paper and digital. I attended a CKU which started the paper version and then my second child was born and now I'm trying to figure out what works best with two girls (2 1/2 years and 8 months). For paper I use post-its which I place on the page protector of the pages I've started. For digital I have a file in my scrapbooking file where I jot my thoughts. I also am trying to keep writing in my journal, and usually do that just before going to bed writing down the events of the day, why I took certain pics. My new camera has a record option so I probably will start using that as well.

By using my favorite pen, and trying to forget how much I don't like my handwriting.

I usually put the journaling together first and put everything else together around it or based on what I wrote. The journaling and pictures are the most important part to me.
I would love to win. Love your stuff Ali!

I like to keep a hard copy of my blog handy when I am working on a LO...helps me to remember what I was feeling at the time I took the pictures. Sometimes I just quote directly from the blog entry and sometimes I paraphrase depending on how much space I end up with on the LO.

When our family goes on long road trips I take a stash of scrapping mags and pull out the Q & A articles - the ones that give you all the questions to ask your family to help you with journalling.
We always have a lot of fun hearing each others answers. The girls love to hear their dad's answers- he's not a big talker.
I record the responses to use in my scrap books.
