Weekend Creative : Felt Garland
Tags:

[ this project was also featured yesterday in the Home & Garden Buzz at CafeMom.com : thanks Sheri ]
This is a very simple, fun, inexpensive, low-stress project that can be done while sitting on the couch watching your favorite holiday movies. I got the idea from a recent craft/antique fair where they had some great cream felted-wool garlands hanging on the trees.
Really all you need is some felt, scissors for cutting, wire & needle for stringing, and some wire cutters to snip at the end.
I cut up a bunch of wonderfully imperfect squares (this means no measuring) and strung them onto the wire using a needle. My squares (and some became more like rectangles) were about
Make it as short or as long as you want. One color, multi-color, etc.
String it on the tree when you are done.
I think this is definitely a project that kids could participate in with supervision.
Here's some other felt garland ideas I found online - some are how-to's and others are from shops:
Anna Maria Horner Blanket Stitch Circle Garland : I had never been on her blog before but it looks really cool with lots of homemade projects
Felt Ball Garland : for sale from abitare shop
Felt Garland Tutorial from under construction : good photos + instructions for a stitched flat circle felt garland
Felt Alphabet Garland : for sale from Mahar Drygoods
December Daily post coming later this morning.

Looks like fun but time-consuming to cut individual squares. I'd recommend a large ruler and rotary cutter - then you could cut strips and just snip them apart to form the squares.

Ali - Have you seen the Artgirlz website? I met them at a quilt show a couple of years ago and bought tons of their stuff. Their little felt tree kits are great (my friend bought it for her daughter) and I bought lots of charms and felt. They currently have felt balls on their site, which would be great for garlands. Here's the link:

Enjoy!

Great tip Cheri - I actually cut strips freehand with scissors and then chopped them up from there ;).

Ali (and Amy!), Ana Maria Horner does have some beautiful projects - she has a new book out and not all of them require sewing (thank goodness 'cause a seamstress I'm not!) - love her color combos - they're an inspiration in themselves!

I love this idea and super simple...I have a ton of felt squares and yards of it so I will give this a try this weekend-maybe using non-traditional colors to go along with our first non-traditional Christmas.
BTW, I love seeing your growing belly:)
There is nothing more beautiful than a pregnant woman!

I love this idea and I can get my kids involved. Family Fun mag. has an idea for a felted wool mini wreath, but you can use felt instead, reminded me of your garland. My sister is due about the same time you are, so it's fun to see you and her baby bumps. She had a boy 2 yrs ago and now is going to have a girl also. Thanks for the idea!

Cute idea. I am currently doing your December Daily for the second time this year and love it. It really makes me do more during the season. I think it will be a great tradition to add to our family holidays.
I just wanted to give you the link to my site and to a craft idea that I think your son would like.

It's fun for the kids to add their own touch to the decorations.
Have a happy Holiday.

Love your garland. Last year I made a wreath out of larger squares of recycled wool that I'd felted. Love it. Did kind of the same thing as your garland--just bigger squares and wasn't fussy about getting them perfectly sized.

Love the garland Ali...not sure if I'll have time this year with all that's going on but will definitely be thinking about it for next year! Thanks again for all your inspiring ideas!

I love this idea - so cute and easy. I think I'll make a wreath instead of the garland. Thanks!

I love Joelle's idea about doing a wreath like this! I've already made two wreath's this year, so maybe I should stick to garland.
How long did it take to string all the squares up?
I love this idea Ali, thanks for the inspiration!
