Family Swimming Adventures

Swim1

For as long as I can remember swimming has been a part of my life. It's a huge part of my personal history: I swam for fun, competed into college, taught lessons, and coached at different points in my life.

Swimming has become a past time that we enjoy as a family. We are lucky to have an awesome indoor pool called the Tamarack Wellness Center available for family swims a bunch of different times during the week. It's an indoor, salt-water therapeutic pool with a water temperature of 92 degrees. Yes, 92.

We first started going to Tamarack a few years ago when Simon was receiving services through the local early intervention agency EC Cares. Since then we have been fairly regular at different parts of the year and it has become one of Simon's favorite activities.

Swim3

During the winter it's awesome because it is so nice and warm. During the summer it's awesome because most people are outside and
it's a lot less crowded.

Swim2

Simon is so happy now that we are all going again. Waiting
for Anna to be old enough probably felt like forever when you are
living in "kid" time. He and Chris went a few times on their own but I think it's just more fun when we all go.

Swim4

We took Anna to the pool for the first time just about a month ago. She's a total water baby and is happy to be in the water both at home in the tub and in the pool. Again, that warm water is a total benefit especially for little ones.

Yesterday I remembered to take the camera and was rewarded with awesome light coming in from the windows and an almost empty pool.

I am so very thankful we have a place we can go that seems such a great fit for our family.

Tomorrow : a brand new weekly series that I am really excited about.

Ali, this is totally random but have you found a unique home for Simon's lost teeth? My son's lost tooth accidentally got thrown away and I am now on a mission to find a cool home for lost teeth in order to make up for it...

The pool adventure looks like a lot of fun and I'm sure Simon was very happy to have all of you in the pool together.
Can't wait for a new series from you.

Love how you got the ripples in the water to be actual ripples and not a blur (which is what I do, thank you very much, LOL). I started both of my boys early in the water and to this day they love it and I'm so glad because going to the pool is one of the most less expensive past times they have, LOL.

92 degrees!??! That's my kind of pool! It reminds of when I was a kid, my mother would take us to the hot springs in colorado to go swimming. It was wonderful and fun and exciting and lots of great memories were made.
We don't have any pools here that are that warm but I did take my kids swimming to the Y when they were quite little. It was so fun and they just loved it. Now that they are in school it's not something we do anymore.
Thanks for sharing your Petal. The kids and I each did one this weekend. It was a fun and quick project with them.

Wow, that one photo of Simon shows how grown up he is getting! It is always shocking when you capture that with your camera, because since they are perpetual motion it is hard to reflect every day on how they have grown... great shots.
Can't wait to see what you have in store for us! Always an inspiration, esp. with 2 little ones. Go, Ali, Go!

Looks like a great place. We have a community pool that's only open a few months of the year and it's outdoors. I'd love a nice aquatic center!
Were you using your regular camera or something waterproof? We spend a lot of time at the beach & waterparks over the summer and I miss a lot of photos because I'm nervous about taking my camera. I've used the disposable underwater cameras and they are great, but expensive and I'm spoiled by the immediateness of digital. Any suggestions?

Hey Aimee - I was using my regular camera for these shots (Digital Rebel). Because there were so few people in the water I felt comfortable bringing it in with me for a bit. I would definitely use this camera at the beach...but maybe not at a waterpark (just because you are in and out of the water and on rides all the time - I love waterparks). When we were on vacation a few years back we used a disposable water camera for taking shots of Simon + I riding on a jet ski. The pictures weren't as great but the moments were captured.

I just want to thank you for the petals. I printed those out and had my daughter and her friend do that as a playdate craft and then my husband and I each did one this week-end. It was fun for me to learn what each person thought of themselves.
What a great pool experience. My daughter also loves the water. We started her when she was Anna's age and she still loves the water. This will be her second year of swim team.
Thanks for sharing such wonderful insights into your family's life. You're an inspiration!

It's so awesome that you have a (warm) indoor pool to go to! I guess that's one of the benefits you get to living where you live. I'm so excited to take my little girl to the pool for the first time but I still have to wait for it to warm up enough. I don't want to make her afraid of the water by putting her in a cold pool. :)

How fun, Ali. You got some great photos there. This sounds like a lovely place to have access to -- it's nice that you're able to take advantage of it. I'm sure a lot of people that could use it, don't make the time. Also, Simon sure is getting big!

    That is so great!
I used to do water therapy in a hot pool like that, but it wasn't salt-water... never heard of that. Is it for therapy purposes?

Hi Ali, Those pool shots are awesome. You are so lucky. We are not allowed to take photos in 'pools' over here (UK - and not in quite a few other childrens activies either). I hired a pool (privately) for my daughters birthday party about 10 years ago and got into trouble for trying to take photos. It's a shame really, because it creates big photo gaps in their childhoods. Simons obviously loving it, Anna doesn't seem so sure lol.
