Signs of Summer
Tags:Our first CSA (community supported agriculture) farm share box from Groundworks Orgaincs came yesterday. Included in the box: red leaf lettuce, 2 cucumbers, carrots, basil, new potatoes, strawberries, sweet onions, sugar snap peas, and garlic whistles. To find a farm to support in your area check out Local Harvest.
The removal of long-sleeved shirts from Simon's closet (much to his chagrin). He is a big fan of "longs" as he calls them. After having a bunch of morning battles over which shirt he was going to wear ("I do not like short sleeve shirts" with a very mad face) we took all the long sleeve shirts out of his closet for the summer. The last couple of days have seen better behavior in the mornings as he adjusts to the choices he has available.
Flower baskets on the porch.
The countdown-to-summer school calendar (with green "x's" for "in green" days). Hard to believe he is almost done with First Grade.

Flip flops have begun appearing here and there in the usual spots we leave our shoes.

My own little vegetable + herb spot. We had a friend build some
raised beds for us in our backyard last month but I am waiting to use
them until we do a few other things back there (like have a patio put in and other landscaping stuff). I have always been a fan of container gardening and have done tomatoes in the past. Definitely excited to have our own stash of mint, parsley, rosemary, and cilantro.
Sun rompers & sun dresses (the girls clothes are really so much more fun...). Anna is one of those babies that runs really warm and as the temperatures heat up outside I am loving these cute options.
Grab your camera today and document some of the signs of summer around your house (or winter if you are in the Southern Hemisphere). Hoping to put this content together into a layout soon.

Love your signs of summer. Love the red door, pots of herbs and adorable Anna.
Funny that you mention clearing out the closet of long sleeve shirts. Twice a year I go through my kids' closets, in spring and fall, to clear out clothing. I usually do this when they're at school so I don't endure fights about what stays and what goes. I had hubby install a closet bar half way down on half the closet so the kids can reach it. On this bar I put the clothes they can wear daily (to school, playing outside) so they reach in and grab whatever they want to wear. They love being able to choose what they want to wear and I love that they don't choose the good dress up clothes to wear to school (b/c those clothes are hanging in the upper bar that they can't reach). As another poster said, picking out what to wear is not a battle I want to fight.
Thanks for sharing and have a great afternoon.

Great photos Ali although being down here in NZ it makes me cold seeing Anna in little summer outfit, but she is so cute and growing so fast. I have same problem with my son only he likes short sleeves and shorts, so they have now been put away so that he can only put long warm clothes on. He knows he is cold and he can feel the cold he jsut thinks it wastes his time to put the extra layers on

Ali,
Is that a Millenium Falcon under your coffee table? Aren't they the most difficult toy to find a place for. We have 2 of them, and the only place I can find to store them is under the boy's bed. Amy :)

We just got our first CSA goodies of the season today! It was so much fun to make a nice salad for dinner and season our food with some fresh herbs. Our shipment for the week was not as diverse as yours, but in a few weeks they'll be harvesting quite a bit more. It was so exciting to stop by the farm today to pick it up, too!

Hey Ali, this totally won't help at the moment, but we have just changed out our clothes here too - it is officially winter here in Australia. But thought I would share anyway, we keep our short sleeve shirts out and I have a few plain white long sleeve ones, which we wear with the t shirts over the top - gets a lot more use for the t shirts that they seem to grow out of so quickly. So maybe it will help with the transition again next season. I also had a couple of long sleeve white onsies, and t shirts for my little girl too - very handy for getting some more use out of your favourite little summer dresses for Anna. I had a couple of dress type tops that were big enough for dresses on year, and were tops the next! Love getting more use out of some of my summer favourites.

Thanks so much for the local harvest link! I love that idea and am looking into it for my area (central oregon), there are actually a couple farms listed! Sadly we don't have the variety you have though.
This is one reason why I keep coming back to your blog to see what other cool ideas you share.

Great advice, Ali. I'll do just that tomorrow. There are so many signs of summer and school being out here. It's hard to believe summer doesn't officially start for over 2 weeks, huh?
I've been meaning to take some pics of my growing garden (first ever!) I took a "just planted" pic, but it's really going strong now. I am so excited.
Have a great Friday and weekend! :0)

Hi Ali,
We also CSA farm and through the year we have an organic box delivered every week. Being in Ontario, Canada, we don't get local too much. This summer however, we are CSA farming at a local farm so every Saturday morning we head out to the farm to pick up our produce. It is a beautiful farm and I love the experience and the food. My great wish was that it would help our son with his issues around eating; hoping if he saw where our food came from and was more a part of it, he might be a little more willing to try it. So far, we still haven't worked him out of the car much because of phobias with the dogs and bugs at the farm but he is getting a bit better. I know he will turn for the better when fruit is available for picking. He does eat strawberries and raspberries.
Anyway, it's still a wonderful experience and I look forward to the rest of my Saturdays this summer.
Have a good weekend.
