Project Life | Weeks Twenty-Seven, Twenty-Eight, and Twenty-Nine

Project Life | Week Twenty-Seven

While I work on putting together my Week In The Life album I wanted to share updates to my Project Life album.

Playing catch up with the last three weeks of Project Life (still need to do Week Thirty - last week). After going camping and then to the coast with friends and then Week In The Life it took me a bit of time to get all caught up. Love the feeling of having it all set in this album.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Seven

First up is Week Twenty-Seven.

This was the 4th of July and then our family camping trip. I notoriously take very few 4th of July shots and this year was not any different. I'm totally fine with that as our week was really more about our camping adventure.

Inserts include a 6x12 divided page protector from American Crafts. Looks like these are back in stock at Scrapbook.com if you're interested in adding them to your collection - they are such an easy way to add more photos. I like to add a plastic file tab along the side to add a title/note.

The second insert is an 8.5x11 We Are Memory Keepers page protector. The front is a printed email that I'm not showing for privacy reasons about our camping trip.

I took a screen shot of my blog post about what was happening with Lily and printed it on Epson Matte paper (on a Mac the keyboard strokes for a screen shot like this is to hold down shift + command + 4 + the space bar and click). I'm testing out a new Epson Stylus Photo R2000 and it's working really nice. A bunch of the 4x6 photos this week were also printed with that printer. I'd like to do this (screen shot of my blog) more as it's a nice way to actually place the content that I'm often just copying and pasting from my blog into my album.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Seven

One of my favorite things this week was that Chris and Simon (and even Anna) wrote a bit about what they loved about camping. I just need to ask.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Eight

On to Week Twenty-Eight.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Eight

On Sunday of our camping adventure we ended up packing up camp and heading to my brother and sister-in-laws house in Tacoma (they were camping with us). We had planned to camp until Wednesday but when Lily got sick it we needed to take her to an emergency vet hospital and Tacoma was closest.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Eight

The scariness of Lily's illness was one thing. Being able to stay with cousins for a few extra days at their house was really special.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Eight

I took the Learning To Ride post and copied and pasted the journaling onto a 6x4 Story Overlay. I've got a post that will walk you through the steps of doing that in both Word and Photoshop here (video tutorial).

Project Life | Week Twenty-Eight

The label sticker on the journal card above is from October Afternoon.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Nine

And finally, Week Twenty-Nine.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Nine

Week Twenty-Nine included time with friends and then mostly adjusting to being back home once again.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Nine

Because I had less photos for this week I ended up getting creative with what I did have. I could have taken this big sheet of 12x12 white paper that Simon wrote on and used it as an insert. Instead I decided to cut it into two, 4x6 pieces and add it into the bottom two pockets. I added a small tag to include some context about why Simon had written this sweet note.

Project Life | Week Twenty-Nine

Simon and I saw the last Harry Potter on Thursday - we loved it!

OVERALL OBSERVATION | I found it tougher to do this after the fact and definitely know that I enjoy it much more when we are just here at home and it's easy to add as life happens. I also found myself hurrying through and I didn't really like that feeling either - I like being able to focus on one week at a time. So what would I do different next time we are traveling? I'm not sure. Maybe that's just the way it is...

Thanks for catching us up on PL, love all the camping pictures. I need to catch up on my PL as well. My daughter had her 13 bday on July 20th and she still has to do some writing for the days. Hoping to work on it this week and get last weeks caught up too.

I would say next time you go on a trip take the little pack of journal cards with you and try to write a little something each day.

I love your pages, and I especially think that it's awesome that you keep some parts of it to yourself! You share so much about your family and your life, it's good that you keep the personal stuff personal :-)

The note from Simon to Anna is the cutest too!

I can relate to the feeling of being behind as well! I am three weeks behind in my album as well due to this and that. It definitely is harder to do after the fact, but I think yours turned out beautifully! This weekend we will be out of town again (one of the reasons I am behind) and I am thinking about taking some journaling cards with me. They don't take up a lot of space in a suitcase, so I'm giving it a try! That way when the story happens, I can jot a quick note down and hopefully that will help my album be more "in the moment." Hopefully it will do the trick!

I, too, take my journaling cards on trips with us. Mostly, I will write at the end of each day. Works great & it's easier to remember details :)

Ali - I'm curious: do you insert a photo from each day in your project life book or do you mainly go by major happenings through the week? I have so enjoyed watching your album evolve. Thank you, always, for sharing your project life with us.

Definitely more week-at-a-glance. I'm not trying to do a photo-a-day.

Especially loved the insert in Week 28 about Simon learning to ride his bike, such awesome pictures that capture the story!

Question - do the Harry Potter movies scare Simon at all? Have you read the books with him too? My daughter just turned nine and we are ready to start the series with her, although she will probably get hooked and pass us in the reading!

Hi Sarah - they really don't scare him...but I think it's a very individual thing. There are definitely parts that would scare kids especially in the later movies. I've been watching them with him all along (we've read parts of the first book together and listened to the audio book)...but he's also a different sort of kid :). I'd say that you know your child best :)

My son turned 6 in February and started watching the Harry Potter around that time. We had the first DVD at home because of his older half-sister, and he kept asking for it. I watched it with him and told him that it might be scary but he really enjoyed every minute of it. So far he's seen the first 5 and we are planning on buying the 6th of the series sometime in the fall. I consider the last 2 too scary (for him) to be watched at the movies theater and he'll have to wait for them to be released in DVD as well. He really really LOVE Harry Potter and he's not scared at all (which surprizes me sometimes) and the one thing that is doesn't like (and would make him close his eyes) are the "love scene" or any kissing!

Always love peeking in on your methods & process (and pix!). Thx for always sharing!! BTW, which pen did you use on the labels "remember" and "this week". I usually like fine tip pens, but this is nice to emphasize. Also good to know a pen that writes on those glossy labels... Thx!!

    Hi Ali,
You are amazing! How you do all that you complete and stay focused, even though you have little ones, hubby and work in the industry publishing just is incredible. I know organization is big part of the process. Doing WITL showed me some shortcomings that I need to work at. I also appreciate you open sharing and the tutorials. WITL also gave a few aah moments. So I am grateful. I so look forward to your class at Creative Escape. thanks for all you do! Blessings and hugs,

    Sharon

Ali - this is great making me wish I done this project too! Maybe next year.
You described how to do a screen print on a Mac. For a PC it is Ctrl Print Screen and then paste. Or something I just learned and love. If you want to just copy the active window it is Alt - Print Screen and paste. Hope that helps some of the non-Mac users out there - I can't be the only one :)

    thanks for all the inspiration!!!

Congrats to you for pushing through on everything that you are doing here. I am DELIGHTED to keep up with PL, and I am just NOW brave to be doing some digital AE stuff (big of me, eh!). I loved the cell phone shot and the note from S to A the best -- these moments are precious. The days are long, the years so short. XOXO to you.

You are truly amazing!! You have really inspired me to get my photos off the computer and in to a memory album. I used to think my scrapbook pages had to be really fancy, with all kinds of embellishments, but the important part is capturing those moments and getting them preserved in a way that generations to come will be able to enjoy them.

I wanted to mention that I use a MAC also, and I use a program called GRAB to get my screen shots. I believe it comes with all MAC computers. My GRAB program is located in the Utilities folder. I thought I would share because it might be a bit easier than using all those keys at once, :)

I love that you are doing this. One of the reasons I couldn't talk myself into buying the Becky Higgins kit was the sameness of the page protector layouts. Seeing yours opened with the other pages mixed in makes me happy. I think I might have to try it next year. Thanks for always being such an inspiration.

I'm not quite sure what you mean when you refer to Simon's note and the possibility of doing it as an insert versus cutting it and putting across two 4x6 slots. Can you explain? I'm feeling dense.

Sometimes I do 1/2 page inserts (that fit in 6x12 page protectors) - he wrote that note on a 12x12 sheet of paper so I could have just slipped it in a long 6x12 page protector vs. cutting it in half. Here's an example of a week where I included an insert that size: http://aliedwards.com/2011/06/project-life-week-twenty-two.html

Love it! How do you get your photos to have the rounded corners...do you use a punch on each corner? I have a project life kit but I haven't started it yet. I struggle with those middle spaces...the small ones. I don't fill them all with writing so I like the idea of putting photos in there but didn't know how to get the rounded corners. I also struggle with the page protectors all being horizontal format. I know I can order vertical, but that is more $$$. Thanks!

I use a small corner rounder from Marvy and round each corner. I also really like to put receipts and other small pieces of paper in those pockets.

i always enjoy your project life posts. i'm currently creating an 8 1/2 album for my week in the life project. i am using your 2010 approach. i'm thinking about uploading my finished pages to scrapbookpictures.com but was wondering if i should check their box says "auto correct" or "no auto correct?" do you have any suggestions. i will be using some of your digital papers in my pages.

Hi Libbi - I'm pretty sure that I choose "no auto correct" especially if I've done any of the corrections myself before uploading.

That picture of Anna and Chris on the top right corner of week 28 reminds me a lot of one of your layouts of Simon and Chris (I think there was a newspaper clipping about new legislation related to speech therapy). So very sweet :) And kind of fun to observe the relationship of daddy's with their sons vs. daddy's with their daughters, and how special those relationships are.

I'm with you. It took me over a week to finish week 28 because it involved my daughter's first birthday party. My husband, father and I went nuts with the pictures that day. I ended up adding 2 extra 12x12 4x6 page protectors just to fit all the photos I wanted to include. By the time I was done, it was past time to do week 29 and I didn't want to do it. I made myself, just to get it done. Week 30 was much more enjoyable then, because I had several days of a break.
