The Phone Photography Project | Summer Workshop

Today I want to introduce you to another fun workshop I'm participating in this summer: The Phone Photography Project: 32 days of Android + iPhone photo challenges, daily inspiration, and app review.

Need summer photo ideas or help improving your iPhone photography? Spend this July taking amazing photos with your iPhone or Android camera in The Phone Photography Project.

Most of you know that I've been taking most of my photos these days with my iPhone. I love that thing. I use a few different apps along the way - for me it's mainly Instagram and PicTapGo. In this workshop you'll learn a whole lot more than I know about camera/photo-related apps and cool ideas for capturing your summer with your phone camera. You'll get one daily challenge from me (and then one per day from 31 other people) plus my thoughts on keeping things simple. I'm also looking forward to learning along with you!

In this month-long workshop, you'll learn to take better photos with the camera you always have with you as you document your summer adventures—with help from 32 incredible instructors (including me). On top of daily smartphone photography challenges, you'll also enjoy:

  • dozens of tips and tricks from the pros for taking better photos with your mobile-phone camera

  • a handbook of 60+ photography app reviews for iPhone and Android, so you know which are worth your time and money*

  • dozens of project ideas for getting photos off your device and into your world

  • interaction with 32 experienced iPhoneographers and Androidographers, and hundreds of fellow students in a private classroom and on Instagram

  • giveaways, contests, discounts, bonus downloads, and fun fun fun!

*Note: Many of the reviewed apps are available free in the App Store and Google Play, while the rest average about $1.99 each. App purchases are not required for participation in the class.

Introductory price: $39
Runs July 1 - August 1

Could you tell us the ratio of iPhone to Android users? I'm an Android user and although many principles are the same, the fact is that the hardware and software is quite different between them.

From Elizabeth (workshop organizer): 30 iPhone instructors, 2 Android instructors.

I don't have the final number on apps reviewed because I'm still finishing this up, but there will be a lot of iPhone only apps, a very good number of apps that cross both platforms from the same developer, a handful of apps that do the same thing basically but are different between platforms, and the best of Android-only photo apps--I think 5 total, off the top of my head.

The challenges and principles of photography emphasized (composition, visual interest, angle, light) are universal.

Oh I love this idea for a class....it's so much easier for me to snap a picture with the phone while working on the ranch....esp while riding a horse.

Sounds like a good project to work on for a teacher who is out of a job July 1st.

I know the feeling. I find out next week if I'll be teaching next year or be out of a job after June 14th!

Just wondering how "summer" focused the class really is...it's not summer in july in half of the world, it's winter and we're not on vacation. i wouldn't want to sign up for something then get frustrated by the seasonal mismatch

Sandy, we're working on the possibility of turning this into a self-paced class to offer again in the southern hemisphere's summer. I can't promise it is definite yet, but stay tuned! The app reviews aren't all summer-specific, but the challenges are. Hope that helps make your decision!

Hey Sandy - I checked on this for you today and it sounds like it's definitely more of a summer class. The app info will be good for whatever the season but the daily prompts are geared towards summer-themed ideas.

Saw this on CZ's FB page and am intrigued since I use my phone almost exclusively for pictures now. Like Sarah (#3 response), I'm also wondering the ratio of iPhone to Android since I don't want to sign up and then find most of the class is directed toward iPhone users.

For my sister's birthday, I bought us iPhones (mine was an upgrade from an 8 year old phone - yep, big difference). Anyways, I purchased this class for both myself and for my sister as a present for Mother's Day. I thought it would be fun for us to take the class together.

Thanks for answering questions.... Wondering how much class emphasis will be on 'getting your photos off phone & sharing'thru social media (Facebook, etc)? I'm one of the few in the world NOT on Facebook, etc. But do take a tremendous amt of phone photos & do get them off my phone. Thanks for any info :)
