One Little Word℠ 2014 | Workshop Registration Now Open
My One Little Word℠ workshop is back in 2014 and I'm excited to invite you to be a part of the journey.
This year I'll be running the workshop via a password protected section of this website. I've had a great relationship with Big Picture Classes for the last three years and will continue to work with them in 2014 for a re-run of 31 Things (register here) and Hello Story (registration will open later this year).
ONE LITTLE WORD℠ 2014
Having a single word to focus on each year has made a difference in my life.
In 2006 I began a tradition of choosing one word for myself each January – a word that I can focus on, mediate on, and reflect upon as I go about my daily life. My words have included play, peace, vitality, nurture, story, light, up and open. These words have each become a part of my life in one way or another. They’ve been imbedded into who I am, and into who I’m becoming. They’ve been what I’ve needed (and didn’t know I needed). They’ve helped me to breathe deeper, to see clearer, and to grow.
What do you do with this one little word?
You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.
You can check out my archive of One Little Word posts here.
In 2011 I offered my first year-long One Little Word℠ workshop in an attempt to help me stay in touch with my word and make it more visible in my daily life. It worked. I've been more connected to my words these past few years because of the specific actions and reflections I've put together for the workshop.
As I reviewed my album that includes the last three years it was so cool to see, literally see in my words and photos, my own personal growth in those pages. I've had a very challenging last few years and the pages in my One Little Word℠ album (one 8.5x11 album holds three years) document a lot of that struggles and successes as I worked my way through (and continue to work my way through) the changes in my life after divorce.
This year I plan to continue that tradition here at aliedwards.com. The cost will be the same as previous years - $31 for 12 months of content and community. Get $5 off by signing up before December 31st. This workshop is not complicated and it’s not time-consuming. It’s simply a way we can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the course of the year.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
Each month will include two main features: a reflection and an action.
The reflections will be something to think or write about and the actions will be something creative - an opportunity to do something beyond writing. In the past that's included things such as a photography assignment, a collage, a vision board, creating a playlist, etc. You can expect a mix of prompts from the past along with some new ones.
Each month will include a video presentation, a full-color handout that goes over the main idea for the month and printables/digital elements. Some of the prompts from past years may be repeated because I see value in the repetition of the exercises with each new word (but all audio, video, and reflections will be new for 2014).
I'm going to continue the tradition of using an 8.5x11 album for my content (see recommended supplies below). Over the last three years I filled an 8.5x11 album with content and I'll be starting a new one for 2014. By the end of the year you’ll have compiled the contents of an 8.5×11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible.
DO YOU NEED TO BE A SCRAPBOOKER? No. Even though we are making an album it’s really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I’m excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

The moment I read this post, a word popped into my head and I haven't been able to shake it. I love this idea! I am wondering if I can do the projects digitally? I do all digital for Project Life and it seems to work really well for me with my time available to work on it etc. Thanks!
Sorry I missed this Jennifer - you can definitely do it digitally. I usually include both PDF and PNG files of the prompts.

I'm registered and looking forward to this journey for 2014. I think I might just have found my word. Thanks Ali

If we don't have a way to print out things right away, will it be a problem? I'm in chaos because we have to move by the end of the month, and I might not have printing access set up until the end of January. Would it be better to take the course next year because of printer issues? Thanks!
Hi Jacqueline - I think you'll be okay :). You could just read the prompts/exercises and write down your responses in a spiral notebook and then transcribe them onto printables when you are able.

I've signed up two years in a row however due to divorce/selling/buying and emotional stuff I paid for the course, had my word but just didn't have the energy to focus on anything else at the time. I think I really need to do this in 2014 as things are still really rough re the ex that's draining the life out of me. I need something positive to go forward into 2014 with so I will commit and do it for me. I've loved watching your One Little Word and of course Elise's experience with her One Little Word via your on-line workshop.

Trying to think of an appropriate word and thinking "HEALTHY" is looking good for me. I am wanting a healthy Mind, body, home, family, relationships to name a few. I was thinking of things like moving on, open, embrace etc. which you have used however I think a HEALTHY Life in all aspects is going to cover the ground work for 2014. Count me in. I am thinking of signing up soon, but I need a printer! Thinking of an Epson Expression and was wondering what you had?? Thank you!
I have an over-sized ink-jet printer (Epson R2000) that I use for printing photo enlargements and printables. I've been really happy with Epson overall and would definitely purchase their products again.

Can you do this in digital format instead of the book...meaning does it work to do a digital format of this for print at the end of the year?
Thanks for letting me know. Jennifer did you see this? : )
I asked the same question but never got a reply. I was thinking of just making up my own templates to match the physical ones but I haven't decided for sure yet. Hope you / we get an answer soon!
Hi guys - sure - you can totally do it digitally. People have done that in the past. There will be some months that will feature more hands on creative prompts and you can choose to do those in whatever way you want (in the past they have been collage paintings - which you can also create digitally). People in the past have adapted the prompts each month to fit their own style ;).

I just joined the OLW journey today. Cant wait to get my materials and do this together. I've heard of this a few years back and always wanted to try it. Just move into a new town a couple of months ago...so many changes and processes. Tx Ali for the opportunity to learn from you. Blessings!

I've registered for my 3rd year and looking forward to this years journey!
I've struggled for my word in past years, but this year was obvious. Bring it on!

In past years, my word has come easily but I am struggling this year. I am engaged to be married (second marriage) and I want to document this new chapter of my life, how we are planning for the wedding and working on combining families. If anyone has any suggestions for something that would work, I would appreciate it.
I thought of Prepare and Anew but nothing has seemed to completely capture everything all rolled up into one.

Because of what my word for this year is, I've decided to take your class to try and keep the word in place. I think the reminders and the assignments will help me do exactly what my word is telling me to do. This is going to be fun!

quick question and i apologize if its a repeat, but is this the same content as previous years (i've done the past 3) or is the content new?
Hi Melinda - it will be a mix just like past years. Hoping to mix it up a bit more with some new prompts but some will be repeats (or close to the same).

2014 will be my 3rd year of OLW. The words I have chosen the last 2 years have profoundly changed my life in positive and amazing ways. When I look back at my words and album I remember how unsure I was about them in January and by the end of the year they really were "just the right word" for what I needed in my life. I have a few words in mind for 2014 but Joy from '12 and Grace from '13 will always be words that mean great things for me because of Ali's OLW classes!!

OK. I just took the leap! Have been wanting to do OLW for the last two years, but was worried I wouldn't be able to keep up with it. Really excited and want this to be a project I actually finish. Thanks Ali for inspiring all of us.
Was wondering...is there anybody else who doesn't facebook? Would love to be a part of the group, but not real wild about opening a facebook account.
Thank you for the tip Michellet. I'm gonna consider doing that.
I don't have facebook either. But I'm making mine tonight and registering for the class tomorrow. I'm only using my first and middle names and not "friending" anyone outside the group. I'm only using it for one little word. I'm taking a huge step. Look forward to seeing you there. Michelle t.
