The stuff of today.

Today was good. Let me lay it out for you:

1. BIKES.
Chris got one last week when I was in Orlando. He has wanted to get one forever and the time was finally right. Today we located a Burley trailer for the dude - the bike shops around town were all backordered on the one we wanted, but REI (aka: the store I go in that makes me want to be more avid about the outdoors) came through like champ with one left in their warehouse. And of course, I needed a bike too. And of course, I found one in no time flat. A "comfort" bike that allows me to sit up straighter (like on a cruiser) but can still handle some more rugged trail riding and stuff. Helmets and locks were also purchased.

2. MAIL. My awesome sister sent me an iPod Shuffle. I have been wanting one big time. It was a special surprise along with some other goodies. Gotta love that the iPod tagline says "enjoy uncertainty." Thanks Jess. Love you.

3. MUSIC. Due to the new iPod I had to re-evaluate my tunage of late. A couple months ago we secured tickets to see The Rolling Stones in Portland in November. Chris is not too fond, but my friend Amy and I really want to go so the husbands are being good sports and coming along. I totally feel like seeing the Stones is one of those things I just gotta do. I downloaded some tunes to get myself in the mood and I also rounded out my current collection with a couple songs from the Grateful Dead. Wish I could have gone to a Dead concert (extravaganza is more like it) before the passing of Jerry Garcia in 1995. Many of my friends from college attended the last one here in Eugene (we were living an hour north in Corvallis at the time). Heard a lot of the Dead in college. And the Stones too. Good times.

4. and I scrapped. Dude, that is good. Back on track once again.

That Burley trailer is great!! We have a Chariot (comparable, Canadian brand) that we LOOOOOVE. In fact, today, we are headed out to find a bike seat for the baby so DH can tow the older 2 and I can ride with the little one. We have bike trails a-plenty here in Germany and I hear the same thing about Oregon. Enjoy the bike trails!!

gotta love the Stones and the Dead! I was lucky enough to see both of them in the same summer in Philadelphia while in college. (I believe it was the summer of 1989) I also saw the Who that same summer (actually the same weekend as the Dead!). Some great tunes for sure. Enjoy!

Ah, the Dead. I saw them in Eugene back in 93, I believe, and again in Seattle in 94. The Eugene show was much better. :)

iPods are too cool. amazing little creations. and iTunes too. I am almost ready to move the stereo out of my office in favor of just relying on iTunes to accompany my day.
    Have a great weekend!

Love our Burley-we still use it and the kids are 10 & 12. We put our lunch and dog in it when go on a ride.
Love the dead, both kids were born while listening to their music and our oldest daughter, while an infant, got to see their last "experience" in Eugene-we got to sit in the press box-what an experience it was!!! Whew getting a bit nostalgic-gotta move back to the present.
    Peace and cool weekend.

So funny! I'm eating a Cherry Garcia Ben and Jerry's as I type. I'm a Dead-head for sure!
May I suggest The Best of Bonnie Raitt? I dig her bluesy-country style. I like to give people something to talk about often. ;o)

Off topic for this post.. but wanted to say Thank you for a bit of an education from your blog.
I don't have children of my own right now but today I was speaking with a coworker about children and she was saying how much work they are. She mentioned that her babysitter has two - one with autism and one with ADHD. I remembered you saying "Consider yourself lucky if you had a child born between 1991 and 2003 that does not have autism, or PDD, or ADHD..." So I found it odd that her children have two of the things you mentioned..
So thank you.. I am going to print off the article and give it to my coworker. I'm sure it will make her feel better because last week she was talking about signing a waiver to not have her kids vaccinated (a requirement here) and I thought nothing of it!

    Hi Ali,
You write alot about balance in your blog; something all mothers are striving for and I read a quote that I thought you'd like. Do you know the writings of Rumer Godden? Definitely worth perusing at the bookstore. The quote says:
"There is an Indian proverb or axiom that says that everyone is a house with 4 rooms, a physical, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time, but unless we go into every room every day, even if only to keep it aired, we are not a complete person." -- Rumer Godden
    Take care,
    Michelle
p.s. Did you ever buy any Kent Nerburn books?

Ah, biking---what a terrific transportation method! My husband & I biked to our local farmer's market this morning---we have 6-7 bikes for our family of 4---favorite bike is the "cruiser" my husband owned when we met (he gave me a ride home on the handlebars after a swing dance class---the 3rd time we'd met...was true love after that!)
Both daughters love riding the cruiser---it's been updated with new wheels, handle bars etc. but still has the distressed black frame, and single speed with the pedal brakes! Nice all 4 of us can now fit on it.
I remember the bike trailer days---we had a Burley for a few years---be careful zooming up driveways that have slight curbs---you might tip out Simon unintentionally---(luckily our daughter was wearing her helmet & was just scared, not hurt!!).
