Tags:So you guys know that I moved, right?
From a 2600 sq. ft. house into a 1300 sq. ft. duplex.
Talk about a great strategy for simplification. You figure out pretty quick what stuff matters and what stuff does not. I finally had a chance to evaluate our living space situation yesterday. I have been so busy that there were still boxes of stuff, scrapbooking stuff, kitchen stuff, toys, junk, "treasures" as my mom calls them, etc all over the place. I like order. I function better in order. Took some time yesterday and last night to get things in order. I feel so much better now.
The mess that is left will be moving upstairs to Chris' new office (in the third bedroom). He is getting a desk today and all his paper work will be moving into that space. For some reason, running for office tends to generate a lot of paper. It will be so nice for him to have his own set up. We can both stop asking one another, "have you seen...?" I swear that yesterday I lost the same thing at least five times.
So I did laundry. I put scrap stuff away. My table is still a disaster as I have pages in progress. I cleaned off the kitchen counter. I have a pork roast in the crock pot. I am feeling better. I think a lot of it has to do with focusing again on balance. Remembering that I need to take time for other stuff around here. Being in a small place requires a bit more daily attention to keep things in order.
INSPIRATION
A couple things I want to share:
• Loni's circle journal pages. Just check them out. She is amazing. So clean. Makes me want to scrap.
• Keri Smith's morning collage project. I love this idea. A bit like Julia Cameron's morning pages (from The Artist Way), but a whole different part of your brain is used. Such a cool idea.
And if you have emailed me recently, please be patient with me...I will respond soon.

Okay, I just had to laugh at the Pork Roast in the Crock Pot. When I am in a clean and orderly mood, I tend to find myself popping in a roast in the crock pot...just makes the house smell all homey...and makes me feel like Im a good SAHM...Hah!

We're a family of 5 living in 1400 sq.ft. I totally understand about deciding what is important and what needs to go. I function much better in order too. :-)

I know how chaotic moving is, and how long it takes to get fully settled and unpacked. We moved into a house that was about the same size, but one that was fully finished. Our last one had a huge unfinished basement we would just throw everything into. It was crazy how much crap we had to weed out to fit into our new place. crazy! Good luck with settling in :)

We're in a 2500 sq ft house. I would love to move to something smaller (in the 1300 - 1600 sq ft range), but DH won't hear of it. We actually discussed this last night and he said that until the kids (two of them) are grown and we're on our own, he can't imagine living in less space. Pshaw.

When you figure out the secret to keeping everything orderly would you please let me know?! With three kids and a house SMALLER than your 1300 duplex it's IMPOSSIBLE to keep up!! Glad someone has a feeling of peace about their business. :-)

My home is about the same size... maybe a few feet more. It definitely makes you move schtuff out when you have to, and store things in the attic. : ) I don't know your email addy, but I wanted to ask you if sometime you'd post about your new point and shoot that you mentioned getting- the Canon Powershot? I think that was it. How are you liking it? Thanks Ali!

Been there, done that...only it was from a house your old size into a 900 square foot apartment! Not fun! We had a garage sale, sent truckloads of stuff to Goodwill, and filled a dumpster full of stuff to throw away as well! But it taught me a lesson in simplification that I am still trying to live by even now that we are in a somewhat larger house again. It is very cleansing to just get rid of that extraneous stuff!

Glad you're getting settled in and good luck to the both of you in Chris' new endeavor. You mentioned "The Artist's Way." Have you read it? Do you do the morning pages. I'd love some insight about the book, if you can.

Ali, I don't know what your reason was for downsizing, but obviously it all comes down to family in the end.
We downsized( I think we did) from a sprawling house in the country (England)with half an acre, but life throws so many curves, doesn't it.
Almost seven years on, we are now pulling back some of the hard work, both physical and mental that we both put into our family. We have just finished, well really you never do,upgrading our 1800sq ft US home.
It does come with a price though . . . family is back home.
Good luck to your family,I really enjoy your work on Two Peas, and reading your blog.
You go girl

Your move to smaller digs sounds challenging! I have been on a rampage lately trying to get a couple bags of STUFF out to Goodwill everyweekend until Christmas. We are also sizing down Christmas this year....just so we don't get so much STUFF. Who needs STUFF??
The inspirational links today ROCK! Love the pages, esp, the circle journal pages! It's not pretty to see me drool over my coffee so early in the morning, but man, that was nice to wake up to. Makes me want to scrap, too, but alas, I have to go to work and do my lunchlady gig.
Thanks for your very inspiring blog and sharing your creativity!!!

You know, Karl and I may be moving early next year and we'll need to be in an apartment for a while before we buy a house in the new city. Everyone keeps saying "Oh no an apartment." but I keep thinking "Cool, an apartment...we can get rid of so much crap!" Maybe I'm weird but I'm really looking forward to getting rid of the clutter.

As someone that lives in a small house, I can sympathize. Trust me - it sucks! LOL!

Those CJ pages are beautiful! (but then I am a clean & simple girl)
I think living in a smaller place is doable as long as you have storage :)
I just miss having the space to entertain - yeah it doesn't happen often but now I'm pretty much limited to summers when we can have BBQs in the backyard.

It feels so great to clean and organize, when the house is in somewhat of an order - if feels like a holiday! Your art journal is incredible, just beautiful!

Who needs STUFF?! The more space you have, the more clutter you own. Time to 'cleanse' your living space and live simple!
