The Business of being Simon.
Tags:1. Singing Old McDonald all on his own, complete with all those great little animal noises and E-I-E-I-O.
2. Yelling out the speed limit when we drive by a sign: "FOURTY" and "FIVE-T"
3. Being excited to go into school. Calling out "hello" and "hi Simon" to his teachers as he walks in the door.
4. Eggs & Toast every day for breakfast.
5. Dora & Diego's Big Adventure (it was on earlier in the week - I LOVE TIVO).
6. Waking up in the morning and saying "goodbye Daddy."
7. Sneaking into Chris' office after being put to bed and pretending to work at Chris' desk. Last night he was about two winks away from being fast asleep.
8. Not wanting to get the bottom of his shoes wet. This makes things somewhat challenging here in the state of Oregon = daily rain. This morning he froze after stepping outside the front door and a look of panic came over his face when he saw that the ground was wet. I picked him up when he asked. If he gets in the car and his shoes are wet he says "want towel." We are working with him on this one...this is a perfect example of why we try to leave plenty of time to do most things...so we can work with him on these kinds of rigidities...but sometimes, like this morning, we are simply late and need to get going.
9. Running around naked is still pretty popular.
10. Just being an overall pretty darn happy little boy.

I love your entry and the way you honour Simon and his little quirks.
As a mother of a 15 year old with Asperger Syndrome, I know something of obsessions. If I may, I have a suggestion regarding the shoe issue: you know that Simon doesn't like to get his soles wet and that if he does, he'll ask for a towel. Why don't you keep a towel in the car? That way Simon learns to deal with an unpleasant situation, as well as adapt, knowing that he can soothe the nasty feeling.
...it was just a thought. Have a good one!

Ali - my son felt the same way about getting the bottom of his shoes wet when he was Simon's age. He used to want us to carry him all over the place so they would stay dry. Thanks for the peek at Simon's day...what a cute picture of him! Jackie

I love the pic...so in the moment...so cute!
I also LOVE that he doesn't want to get the bottom of his shoes wet!! I think that is just the coolest thing...some how, I RELATE to that!!
and I got to thinking...you know those baggies with the elastic bands that service people wear when they come to your house or work on your car or something so that they don't get the carpet wet? We had the cable guy wear them in our house a couple of weeks ago when it rained...you could get him those!
Perhaps that is enabling...or perhaps its giving him a special thing HE can control. I don't know, but my lightbulb definately went ON when I read that!

Hi Ali, big fan here. I just wanted to tell you that today I went to the book store and found a book that made me think of you and how much inspiration you bring to a lot of people. The book is called THE CREATIVE LICENSE by Danny Gregory....Gosh, is soo cool and it really inspires you from the very first page....just as you did with your book and with your work. Just wanted to share a little bit. Here is the link for the book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1401307922/104-6122065-2679928?v=glance&n=283155

rigidity is a part of our lives too. So was nudity. The nudity ended when my oldest was 8 and still stimming nude. We suggested that he wear underwear. Now he is 13 and thank goodness stims fully dress, teehee. I think my life would be so boring if it wasn't for autism.
