What's your message?
Tags:I have been thinking a lot lately about message. What's my message? Around here we talk about it in reference to Chris' campaign and to my work and to how we want to raise Simon. You can have different messages for all kinds of different things in your life. Do you have a message?
When I first started thinking about the whole life artist idea I wanted it to include a message that transcended scrapbooking, that could be a life message as well as an artistic one.
On Two Peas today I read a post where someone made reference to not being a "life artist" (as in, "I am not a life artist.") - rather, they just wanted to record memories for their kids. Being a life artist does not mean that you create some dramatic, fantasticly creative, 12-hour work that takes over your entire being. A life artist is simply someone who captures life - through photos, words, etc - and then creates something with those pieces of life that they captured. A person who scrapbooks Creative Memories style is a life artist in my book. A person who creates altered books with photos and ephemera is a life artist. A writer/blogger/journaler/list maker can be a life artist. A mother who takes photos, writes a bit of info on the back and sticks them in a photo album is a life artist.
The life artist message has become one of attitude - ideas that I think tend to make my own personal life a little easier & richer & simply better. The attitudes of going with the flow, celebrating something everyday, cherishing little stuff, telling your story, finding your voice, not making things more complicated than they need to be...and the knowledge that it is going to be ok - these attitudes are what are really important to me. I repeat these messages to myself so often during the day - when I am scrapping, when I am picking up Simon off the floor, when I am feeling run down & frustrated & just yuck. These are the tapes I want to be repeating over and over in my head. These are messages for life and art.
I consider scrapbooking to be an art. Doesn't this sound like scrapbooking to you:
So, what's your message?
And, hey, thanks so much for all the awesome support on Simon and the potty! The report: yesterday at school he had two accidents (two schools - one accident at each). Today I am HAPPY to report that he came home in the clothes I sent him in = no accidents! It's all about going with the flow!

I am a life artist. I've kind of taken this on as my life message too. To first live life, enjoy it, then at night run and record it. I have been so lost as to what I was going to do with my life (at 29! Eek!) and now, I know. I'm going to pursue photography in a college setting, but still, I think my entire purpose is to create art and show my children the artistic part of life. I was not raised to appreciate art in any sense. I want my children to enjoy music whether singing or instruments, acting, dancing, painting, drawing, photography and of course scrapbooking! Life artist is a pretty cool title I think. ;) Hope you don't mind that I identify with it so well!
Congratulations to Simon on the no diaps situation!

Hi Ali;
I printed your post...I need to read it over and over. To me YOU are a life artist...YOU have this amazing talent and YOU are creative--and me???, I am not really any of the above---I think I have issues...:)but I'm going in the right direction...
SO I am digesting what you have said and as I record my life and stories and figure out my "message" you will inspire me, as you have been consistantly doing for quite some time now...
Glad to hear Simon is not "peeing on the frogs"! Way to go S....

I just wanted you to know... You are AWESOME! You are an inspiration and a kick in the pants just when I need it. You rock! I realized recently that I've found a reason. I've found a reason to do the things I've always wanted to do. I've now set goals and see life in a whole new way. I've had a change in attitude. So thanks for putting yourself out there. You inspire me!

Hi Ali! :) I love your message and I agree with you about the whole "life artist" thing. LOVE to call myself that. ;) I have a little cafe press store where I've created a few things with the kind of messages that I like to support in life. One of them is "live simply. simply live." I love that. You can check out the rest here if you want: http://www.cafepress.com/1happymama
Oh, and that is awesome about Simon and the potty training! So happy for him AND you! ;)Have a good one! :)

Ali, thank you so much for being such a special person and sharing this with us. I think my personal message is a sentence I once found in a Brazilian Bossa Nova song from the 60/70's, which goes something like this: "the most divine thing in the world is to live each second as it will never happen again". Such a big true in my life. :)

To share my message with you I'll tell you a short version of something I wrote recently. Simply stated, scrapbooking has become a *way of life for me*. And yes, it's partly because of the journaling in the pages, the self-discovery process, the beauty of the overall act of pouring your soul on pretty papers, the internal growth, the photography, the creativity and the underlying artistic pursuit; but most importantly it is a way of life for me because in the end, scrapbooking may just be all about me and the things I find hard to let go. This is clearly a time traveling experience for me; a way to be close again to the people and things that matter most in my life. I may not be a major celebrity, a political figure or a millionaire; but I am a mother, a wife, a friend, a sister and a daughter who longs to keep pieces of her ordinary, simple life, recorded for those she cares about. Especially for herself. Even if this could potentially sound a bit selfish for some. I think this way of life is so worth it!
Ali, thank you for inspiring so many of us with your talents and creativity!

Lately, I've been contemplating this thought:
every single action contains the creative.
You are someone that proves this is true.
I simply admire the fact that even before the image-capturing, layout, and design process you are doing incredible things: mastering the ART of attitude; the ART of living life. Thanks for reminding us that we should all do the same.

Long time no visit man! Inspiring all of our minds as usual and felt I better put in my two cents on "What is my message?" Toughie here. I want to be everything to everyone...but I can't. I need to be at the school to volunteer...I need to be at 4 soccer practices and 4 games a week...I need to have dinner on the table every evening...all of this while maintaining my gray roots, wrinkles, weight loss or gain in my case, wife, mother, friend, volunteer, nurturer, daughter, etc. I have decided it's one minute, one hour, one precious day at a time. I am happy to have my health, my family, my "STUFF", my friends and especially people like you that keep us grounded and keep us thinking all the time. You are what makes "ART" that special something that we all love. Keep on doing what you're doing ALI. We love you!!

mine is short and sweet, "art matters". it is everywhere around us, in nature, in our children and in every aspect of our lives. it is in the furniture, colors of our homes, clothing, a beautiful face and shining eyes.
see you friday :)
