Hooray for CARS!
Tags:After the chat this morning (you can read the transcripts here) I decided that Simon and I needed to get out of the house. I looked up times for the movie CARSand we were just in time to catch the movie. Simon has been to one movie in the theater before and we left about 1/4 of the way through because it was obvious it was just not going to happen. Figured I might as well try it again.
And we had already been to McDonald's earlier in the week so he already had one of the cars in his possession. Armed with the little blue car, a bag (to fit the food in once we got there so I could also hold his hand), and both of us in our comfy clothes we headed out.
And you know what? He made it through the entire movie and I am pretty sure he had a good time. We had an aisle seat in the front for easy get-away acess if necessary. At first he sat on the step next to my seat. Then he sat in the seat next to me and eventually he went back and forth between my lap and the seat next to me. He did awesome. He talked quite a bit (so we were working on whispering, except in the loud parts he got to yell as loud as he wanted and say VROOM VROOM as loud as he wanted) which I pretty much had to accept if we were going to stay there - and thankfully there was no one in front of us.
The movie was super cool and fun and I had quite a few laugh-out-loud moments. I love Pixar. They rock. But overall, I was just so happy that Simon made it and enjoyed it.
I think he may have even been proud of himself.

GO SIMON, GO!!! that is so dang wonderful!!
i took my son the opening day & he really enjoyed it as well, but he was ready to leave 15 mins prior to it ending-it was so long-but convinced him to stay. fun fun movie. after we came home, he broke out his own collection of cars & acted out scenes of the movie. it was the coolest thing!

This is my first attempt to post a comment, I didn't know I could w/o being a typepad member!
Ali, you are so inspiring! I love that you share pieces of your life with us and especially the stories of Simon and his successes!
Big step, making it through a movie! HOORAY SIMON!
I work with dual diagnosis adults in a group home, One of my guys won an award for self-preservation and life-achievement on Thursday night. But, I thought of you when a family came up for an award for their 9 year-old autistic son, who also got an achievement for his accomplishments in the past year. He was the youngest in the group of 39 people winning awards! It was teary, to see him come up as his nominataion was read of all the great steps he is making and that his family were all there supporting him.
I thought of *The Dude*, that someday he is going to make great life accomplishments, because he has a supporting family and the opportunity to learn.

LOL! Your description of Simon changing his seat constantly reminded me of Jake at the movies...only he adds the gross, sticky floor to his choices. oh the joy. :-) we're going to attempt Cars this afternoon and it will be 2 year old Tyler's first time...not sure he'll make it all the way but we're going to try! Way to go Simon!! (and mama!)
