Just "fish."
Tags:The two newest residents in our home. No names. Just "fish."
We attended an event last Friday night and the hostess had a cool fish tank with a bunch of little guys swimming inside. Simon was glued to the tank (and his Nemo DVD of course) the entire night. Figured we might as well have a couple here at home.
Chris and I had a fish back in the day when we first started dating. His name? "Speedo." He lasted quite awhile - amazing considering the lack of care he received. Hoping these new fish will be just as sturdy.
Took Simon to the pool again this morning. Can you tell I am totally working this whole "fish" thing? "Swim like the fish" was repeated a few times.
TUESDAY: If you are in/around the Portland, Oregon area tomorrow come by Art House from 6-8pm for "Ali & Apple Pie." Gotta love that - a book signing with PIE. Check out their blog here for all the details and lots of updates on all the new products they have in stock.

My daughter goes to Kindergarten today. We awoke to find one of our two new fishies (aquired at the Ohio State Fair earlier in August) belly up in the tank. Poor Slim.... They'd named the fish Slim and Jim, for the snack sticks. Now we just have Jim. Which is kind of a dumb name for a fish. Doesn't work without Slim. Not a good way to start our first school experience.... But we have another goldfish that's been swimming around in our tank now for going on 3 years! It was a potty training reward for said daughter. Good luck! Sharna

Gregory, Zachary and Katelyn had gold fish for many years, then we got our new cat a couple of years ago, and he liked to drink out of the goldfish bowl, and well, you can imagine the rest. He did not feast on the fish, he just played with them, and they did not fare well. The good news is, the kids were old enough to not get too upset, especially since they had the coolest kitten in the world!!

I love the shot of the fish. My kids love our fish. In fact they have moved with us twice. (the fish...and the kids too) They in fact beat the odds of life. We forget to feed them (fish, not kids) :-) on vacations for a week or two at a time and we wait until their water is almost gone before refilling their bowls. I am in no way hostile to aquatic beings...they just aren't at the top of the list when there is a 7,5, and 2 year old causing chaos! So if you ever need sturdier fish... I highly reccomend a red or blue Beta fish. For longer life...ignore them!

I wish you better luck with your fish then we had. We bought two fist a couple of weeks ago and they lasted all of 3 days :( We had a couple of sad kidos! They will be replaced after school starts, and hopefully they will do better.
Have fun with the pie tonight. Sounds really yummy!

If perhaps (and hopefully this doesn't happen), but if the gold fish doesn't work out - Bettas (or is it Betas?) are pretty hardy fish. And more colorful, too. My hubby and I have a couple of aquariums, so I've been forced to acquire a knowledge of fishy-things. Good luck with them, and I'm glad to hear that Simon is doing so well!
PS - I signed up for your weekend at Split Rock in PA in January - CAN'T WAIT!!

Ali,
if they don't last that long, try getting a Simese Fighting fish. We got ours at Walmart and it lasted two years...Hayden was sad when Stitch died, but heck that is really long for a fish...
Have fun,
Mary

I see Laurel also made that suggestion - Betas - but don't get two or they will kill each other!

Ali,
Just FYI... goldfish evidently grow depending on the size of their bowl. We had one that grew to the size of an adult male's hand! Our fish ended up being 'freed' into a pond near Grandma's house. :)

This is my favorite fish, and you make it pretty nice aquarium, it's great to see fresh, creative ideas that have never been done before.
