Happy New Year.

We spent the night in Portland last night with our friends the Locken's. This was the second year of their kid-friendly party and again, it was perfect (especially the part where we get to spend the night). And we got to meet two-week old baby Sawyer. Sigh. Love that.
Now it is time to get back to reality. Back to work and to schedules and to a couple months of travel. I am making some big changes this year with my schedule. I have events scheduled for the first three months and then after that I will only be traveling/teaching for CKU's and at trade shows (+ meetings in Utah). I will miss meeting all the awesome people at store events, but this is the right choice for our family at this time. I am taking on some more responsibilities for the magazine that will enable me to be home more (doing more work from home). Look for some exciting things to come from me - including another book - later in the year.
I am really looking forward to hunkering down here and getting creative, challenging myself to take things in new directions.
Chris gets to move into his office at the state capital in Salem tomorrow. He has his office number, his desk number on the house floor, and his hour and 20 min commute (one way) to look forward to (excited to do a layout about the new numbers in his life). He will be sworn in on January 8th and immediately getting into his new groove. Can't believe it is all real.
Simon has one more week off before heading back to school and getting into his normal routine. This next year will see a re-evaluation of his diagnosis and in the fall, a potential move to kindergarten - depending on how it all goes (and what his teachers recommend). He has come such a long way over the last two years - it will be exciting to see what is next for him. One of my favorite things from this last night was comments from both Amy and Jason on how much he has developed - and how much more he is talking - since just a few months ago. Love that.
One big deep breath in and out. Here we go.

I am so glad to hear that you are going to get to be home more. Simon will love it. Right now he really needs his mom. So cheers to the less traveled roads for you. Congratulations for making this change. We all love you out here in the big world but, Simon loves his Mom. Also I am glad Chris won I wasn't able to vote for him because I live in Albany but I am glad he will be a part of the Oregon process. Thanks again to all the wonderful things your family does for all us people out in the big crazy world.

Oh Ali - I have 2007 envy. Sounds like a good plan. I can't wait to read your next book - I was just sitting by the pool earlier this evening reading your first one and enjoying it all over again. Couldn't help but think I caught a whiff of 'baby' coming from your plans - sniff, sniff - ???? Is there some nesting going on inyour new lovely house? New house, Chris has a new job, new baby might make it 3.
Sorry to be so impertinent!

My heart jumped when I read Simon may be starting kindergarten this fall. It's subh a big thing, isn't it? Leaving the safety and comfort of E.C. is nerve wracking! You are in the same place we were last year at this time. We decided to wait another year for our little boy, and it worked out well. As a kindergarten teacher myself, I knew it would be a huge change, and I wasn't sure either one of us were ready for it! Trust your teachers - I know from your comments you really like them. They know him best in the school situation and have a good feel for how he'll do. For me it was nice to have his teachers verbalize what I was thinking. Good luck!

I sense a big shift for 2007 for a lot of people and it's great to hear you will be slowing down (a bit) for your family. That's awesome that you are able to do that. Sounds like an exciting year ahead and I wish you the best. I'll be counting the days for the book release! You are my fav! Yeah Simon!

Thank you for sharing your family life with the rest of us and thank you for being such a great human being. You have been my greatest source of inspiration and influence this past year both in my artistic and personal life.
