The House of Representatives
Tags:I am now officially Mrs. Representative Chris Edwards. What a day! We were up super early to make it here for the morning session. Simon kept his jammies on in the car and we dressed him once we got to the parking lot. He was not too sure about the whole thing. Excited that we were going to Daddy's office, but not excited once he saw all the people around. Once again, the video ipod came in very handy. A nice way for him to "chill" and experience something that is more normal for him.
During the morning session Chris was sworn in with the other Representatives. We got to sit along the side. Simon fell asleep on my lap before it began (which was a good thing), and I ended up laying him down on the floor in front of my chair. He was much happier down there.
The second session was the swearing in of the Governer. Lots of pomp and circumstance, but inspiring - especially his use of the word opportunity. We had the opportunity to sit with Chris on the floor this part. I took Simon out there long enough to snap a couple shots of him at Chris' desk and then decided that the side area was probably a better location for us - unpredictable behaviors are much easier to deal with from the side than when you are sitting right in front of the Governor, all the state-wide elected officials, past Governors, and current legislators. Again, the ipod is our saving grace.
After that session Simon headed back to Eugene with Grandma and Grandpa. I am hanging out here with Chris - enjoying checking out the capitol, chatting with people, and generally feeling excited about state government. It is amazing to think of the history of this place and all the people that have come before. So cool.
And can you spot Representative Edwards in this photo?
A good day. A long day. A proud day. A very proud day.
And now it is time to get to work.

I've been reading your blog for almost a year (and this is my first, maybe second time posting a comment)so of course there's that one way intimacy where I feel like I know you so well. And feeling that way, when I read this blog today I felt so proud of you and Chris. Not only for Chris winning the election but how you both raise Simon. I have a 7 year old and while he's not autistic, I have many memories and current experiences of not being able to take him certain places. You handle it so well by finding ways for him to participate in your world on his terms. HIS TERMS. Those should be MY word(s) of the year.
Congratulations on being great parents and great citizens. Watching how you both parent Simon leads me to think Chris will find thoughtful (in both senses of the word) solutions to political issues. I look forward to finding out how you both take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Ali, you are so very inspiring. Thank you for sharing such an amazing day in you life with all of us, your "groupies" LOL. No, really, thanks for this amazing gift. It is certainly very cool to see through your camera lens what this day must have been like for you and your family. So very cool indeed. And yes, so very easy to spot Representative Edwards. The thumbs up kind of gave him up, huh? You two are simply amazing and wonderful people. No wonder you found each other!

ahhh, I can feel the exhilaration in your words. i remember that feeling well. I remember when I walked the halls of our Federal Parliament, in the non-public areas, saying hello or members and Ministers, and getting a total buzz. Politics is so cut-throat and in so many ways so impersonal, yet there is something exciting, exhilarating about being in those corridors, those offices. Enjoy the experience!!
(oh and love the OPPORTUNITY - that's my word girl!)

Ali and Chris. As a Crown Prosecutor with the Department of Justice here in Calgary, Ab. I know how thankless a career in the public sector can be. But I also believe some of us are here to be that sometimes "angel" for without people willing to make the sacrifices that are required to work in these jobs, the system would fail. I wish you all the best and sending lots of positive vibes your way! the best you can do is yours, and if you do that every day, you will know you are successfully fulfilling a mission you have begun.
