Thanks Ali. I also love the quote by Joe Buissink "There is no such thing as a perfect image, only a perfect moment". Now I can scrap my engagement photos that aren't so stellar.

Perfect timing. I just took a couple quick shots of a friend of my husbands trying to teach our daughter how to slow dance (for an upcoming school dance) she's 11 and the moment was totally scrabable but the photos weren't anywhere near perfect! I will scrap them anyway! thanks for my daily dose of IT IS OK!
Very cool!

Ever since I started reading your blog I find myself turning the flash off more & more. In fact, I just took some shots of my 2 year old "washing" the dishes yesterday and did a few without the flash that ended up with bits of blur, then a few with the flash. I definitely loved the warm feel of slightly imperfect shots way more than the ones with the flash.
Thanks for sharing that article, great ideas!

Thank you for sharing this with us. I am a recovering (sometimes not) perfectionist. And he is so right. So right. The need for things to be perfect can be paralyzing.

Ali-thanks for the post-Thanks to you I have turned off my flash, and I have loved the results, but I have been struggling with the photos that turned out to not be quite perfect. This post really was inspirational-It also seems you have been described as the "Oprah" of scrapbooking and I was just thinking that thought the other day about you. You offer yourself so freely through this blog and all of your other endeavors. I have learned so much from you and I am really starting to view myself as a true artist in this and other areas of my life- It is a liberating feeling. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I promise to continue passing your life wisdom.

Since I started using my new camera with the ability to turn off the flash, I never use the flash. The pictures are so much better without the forced light. Sometimes I shoot the same picutre w/flash and wo/flash, and the no flash phota ALWAYS wins as best picture. I love shooting indoors w/o a flash. I was surprised at how well the photos turned out w/o flash indoors. It has been really fun playing with it!

hmm. i guess i disagree a little. certainly fear holds us back, but is striving for perfection necessarily a bad thing? afterall, there are certain times in life where perfection is vital. if i'm going in for brain surgery, i want to be sure the surgeon has perfected his skill! as perfection relates to photography, it seems the idea of perfection is fairly relative. for someone like mike, turning the flash off creates the look he is trying to achieve; which might be called his idea of perfection!
