3 Things : playing with printing + a giveaway

Threethings_paperplay

Staying in the theme of words + photos this week I wanted to experiment with a couple different inkjet printing surfaces. I took that photo of Chris & Simon and the tie and printed it on each of the following using my HP Photosmart D7360:

[ Warning : any of my experiences below could very well be operator error. ]

WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum : Quick and easy. Great result. See sample below. It's been awhile since I last used vellum and it was fun to reintroduce it into my supplies. Definitely want to play with it more: thinking about layering with transparencies and text and photos.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets : love the idea of this. My first issue is that the paper got stuck in my printer (grumble). Round two, stuck again. What seems to be happening is that the fabric is peeling back and getting stuck inside the mechanisms of the pinter. I am thinking to myself as I go through this process: how long do I mess with this before I just quit? Round three, stuck again (and yep, I am trying different settings as I go). Ok, after a couple more tries (and the passage of half-an-hour) I am done trying - I am not enjoying the process and there is no simplification happening here. It's such a bummer - would love to see how this would work with my photo. I may try again on another day. Anyone else tried this and had success? Tips?

Grafix Rub Onz - Create your own rub ons. Super cool idea. I wanted to see if this would work with a photo + some words...and at least in my case it was a challenge. This is a multi-step process that includes printing, then placing adhesive paper on top, and then adhering your image to final paper. The real challenge is getting the adhesive paper onto your image without bubbles. The second challenge is in the choice of the paper you rub on to. I tried it on textured cardstock and it didn't seem to work - it just tore the paper. I will probably try this whole process again to see if I can make it work.

EQ Printables Peel & Stick Fabric Sheets (notice the pulled up edges). [2] Photo printed onto WorldWin Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum - I wanted to see what it would look like with the KI lace cardstock in the background (right now it is just held on there with a paper clip). [3] My attempt at using the Grafix Rub Onz onto cardstock (this could have been part of the problem - maybe it needed a slicker surface for it to adhere) - all it did for me was rip the cardstock. My tips? Fill the frame - I love the pictures that focus on faces! And, tilt the camera and get down low or high. And...take lots and lots of pics.

Humm....don't have any good photo tips, what I want to work on is taking more shots of myself (or someone taking them of me) Like you said, the 'one behind the camera' is part of the story too! I have tons of pictures (everyone else) and it's like I don't exsist!
Love the words + photos... thanks for all that share with us!!

A favorite photo tip would be to carry extra batteries. LOL Seriously though, my batteries will run out of juice in preciesly the most expensive place to buy them (ex: Sea World). heehee

I had good luck with a different brand of print-on fabric; it was not self-adhesive so I think that helped. I ended up using the printed photos on a quilted project, and ironed them on using a fusible fleece. Thanks for the great giveaway op!

I have 3 young kids and getting everyone to have a real smile in a photo (and not a silly forced smile) is always difficult. I have resorted to potty talk. Kids think it is hilarious and I get really great shots!

My tip? Don't forget to pull back sometimes. My two favourite photos that I have scrapped recently? One is my son running on an empty beach, mountains in the background. While he is small in the picture, pulling back conveyed the feeling of that day. The other photo is of my son and mother walking down a path. Also sometimes pulling back a little allows more freedom with cropping photos to fit a layout. That being said, I also love to get in close!

My favorite photo tip is to just "go with it" and then set the camera aside and enjoy the moment. Loving all of your tips!!

My main photo tip is for pregnant people! Because it's hard to remember to take "belly" photos when you are pregnant, I just tossed my digital camera in my purse and at every prenatal appointment I had my practitioner take a pic of me in the same pose and same spot... the result is a CUTE time lapse page with all those belly shots showing my tummy growing!

My best tip is to find a good method for organizing all of your photos beyond chronological order. After going mac and using iphoto for organizing photos it's one of the best ways I've found to organize all of the photos I take into albums making it easy to sort and find any photos I want for my projects. My two cents.

I need to learn Photoshop to do picture editing. I've been loving the vintage actions that people have been using to give their photos a genuine vintage look.

Love your site, Ali. My favorite photo tip is to sneak up on your kids by zooming and not intruding on their space to get a more natural, "unposed" look. This especially helps if you have kids who either avoid the camera or cheese it up a little too much.

ok i really like the vellum and WILL be giving this a try. how freakin cool is that?
Okay, I dont really have any tips because I'm learning about photography right now. But what I realy want to work on is taking pictures from a different perspective. I usually shoot dead on and I think it'd be nice to take it a step further!
Thanks for all the inpiration that you give me! Love your blog!

My tip would be take lots of photos at different angles, remembering to take pictures from eye level, below, above, side to side. Make sure to take horizontal, vertical photos of the same image. Have fun, play with angles. Get in really close to your subject. Mix it up! Now the only thing I need to work on is trying to figure out why my pocket digi never wants to focus for me.

My favorite photo tip is get close ups. I get some of the best shots of my daughter when I zoom in on her face and really capture her expression. Often that means "cutting" part of her head, ear, etc. off. But it's so worth it!

My favorite photo tip is for landscape photography -- try getting *down* and then tilting your camera up. This works great for wildflower meadows, beach scenes with rocks in the foreground, a forest to make the trees loom overhead -- you get the idea!
The thing I want to work on is using all the photos that I take more. Have a hard time finding things after a month or so. I use iPhoto and name the rolls, but I'd like to get more organized. :)

First off, I think Donna Downey has printed on fabric with an inkjet before. I could be wrong, but you might want to hit her up for ideas (not that you haven't already thought of that). Second, my new thing to try is from the Inspired weekend. I am experimenting with transferring photos the way that Kal taught us in class. I am then coloring them and using those as accents to my pages instead of just photos. Really fun stuff!

I don't really have any good photo tips. I am always learning. But with the digital age that we are in, I definitely suggest taking TONS of pictures and you usually get a really good one. (I might have actually learned that from Ali :) That is what I try to do. Love this week's posts......you're awesome.

I keep my small Sony point and shoot in my purse at all times, so I'm ready whenever there is an opportunity for photos. When snapping my great-niece and -nephews, I'll often snap, snap, snap without pause or waiting for a 'pose.' Sometimes they're too blurry, but I've also gotten some really interesting pictures that way.
I've also learned to think about the story or stories while choosing what to shoot. Taking pictures of my great-nephew Bennett's first birthday party the other day, I caught a picture of Bennett pausing mid-crawl and looking up at big brother, Russell. No party stuff in sight. That picture won't be with the party layouts or mini-album, it will be put into a layout about looking up to big brother. So keep in mind other connections unrelated to the event you're taking pictures of.

I love to take pictures of my kids with their entire bodies fully engaged in whatever they are doing. I love natural shots that really show who they are and those amazing personalities that God has blessed us all with.
