One Little Word 2010
Tags:I am a fan of welcoming the new year with open arms. I love fresh starts, new opportunities, clean slates, possibilities.
Back in January 2007, as a way to celebrate these beginnings, I started a public tradition of choosing a single word to focus on over the course of the year.
Many of you are familiar with this tradition and have been joining me in selecting a new word each year. If this is your first time reading about the idea of one little word I recommend taking a few minutes to read my original post here.
Here's a look at my words from the past three years with links to the original posts.
2007 :Peace [ read my post for 2007 ]
2008 :Vitality [ read my post for 2008 ]
2009 :Nurture [ read my post for 2009 ]
Essentially the idea is to choose a word (or let it choose you) that has the potential to make an impact on your life.
Maybe you want to invite something or maybe you are hoping to subtract something. Maybe your word will be practical or hopeful or creative or fanciful. Maybe you need a big word, something in-your-face that will challenge you everyday. Maybe you need something smaller and quieter that will whisper gentle tidings as you make your way throughout the year.
Whatever word you end up with, make sure it is your word (not your sister's, mom's, partner's, child's, etc). You can share it publicly or keep it close to your heart.
My word for 2010 is STORY.
I'm planning to do a post with more details on my thoughts about this word on Wednesday (look for the finishing pages of my December Daily tomorrow). I am hoping to use my word as a springboard for a variety of different projects and inspirations, in my life and my scrapbooking, over the next 365 days.
Have you chosen your word yet?

2008 - Conscious: to remember to be conscious and not just do things because...
2009 - Simplify: to remember that I can say no and that it's okay to make things easy on myself.
2010 - I'm trying to choose between Patience, Savor, and Peace. Still haven't decided.

That was my word for last year, and I really think it made a huge impact on my life. I'm much calmer and happier... Good choice.

I agree Lori. It is very difficult to accept changes like that when you ad no choice in the matter. I to have been struggling with that in my life adn deciding whether to raise my children on my own or work thru it. Best of luck to you in this next year!

Thanks Ali for doing this again. My word for this year is embrace. I want to embrace life, my family, what I love doing and mostly this year myself. I skipped last year, but in 2007 my word was joy and I loved looking at it on my wall as a reminder.

All these posts are inspiring! So great to read about each person's word and why they choose it. I've been wrestling with different ideas--thought about focus or intention, but another word came to me today: Simplify.
It will remind me to focus on what's important. I want to simplify my environment, as well as put my energies into just a few important things. I can make do with less and be freer and happier. May the New Year bring everyone the energy and health to accomplish their dreams.

I saw where someones word this year was "Begin." I love to begin new things, but can't seem to find the time to complete them once the new wears off. So, my word for the year is "Finish." I am going to try to only start projects, classes, etc. that I know I can finish.

Ali this post is the first time of have heard of your word for the year I love the idea but I am finding it very hard to find a word as all your lovely readers have excellent words and they all apply to my life and how I want 2010 to be. I want to be more patience as elizabeth said as it seems we are very similar and times are hard financially also and I have trouble going with the flow and I am always wondering whats ahead I love the word focus and explore as I am needing to focus on who I am as I am a mother of two tweenies and all of a sudden they have become a little self involved and so motherhood is changing for me I have come to another stage in my journey I have been a SAHM for 11 years and I am feeling restless and I wanted balance time for family time for my husband and i and time for me HOW DO I PICK JUST ONE WORD! or do I have all of them I am at such a crossroads! Sorry for such a long post

My 2010 word is "blessed". In September, my mother passed away after having suffered a massive stroke in June. Even though the months have been difficult, I feel so blessed to have had her in my life. And she had such a positive impact on so many others lives as well. I think about her every day. I am blessed to still have my father and I have an amazing son. I pray that I can pause a moment every single day and focus on what is really important in my life.

I have enjoyed doing this for the past 2 years. 2008 was "productive" and 2009 was "choices." I even feel like the previous years words have stayed with me somehow. Productive became a habit, and choices seemed to help with not getting angry so much at the little things. I decide how I feel each moment and don't let others influence me. It was not what I intended when I chose that word, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
This year's word is "Relax." Planning a wedding and starting my own business... I will definitely need to relax! My fiance's word is "Decide." He is very indecisive!

My word for 2010 is "think". Think before I speak, think about how something will turn out, think about WHAT I am doing or trying to do, think about my future, think do I already have 4 sheets of this same paper, do I REALLY need this embellishment, - just to use the word to live my life in a more conscious way.

After DARE and TRUST, I have chosen EMBRACE as the word for 2010.
Embrace life - embrace God's plans for me - embrace my family - embrace having less stuff - embrace change and new possibilities.
Thank you for inspiring me to do this each year, Ali!

Great words this year. I've been torn between PRODUCTIVITY and ORGANIZATION - I think my word should be PRODUCTIVITY as it can pertain to so many aspects in my life - home, work and scrapbooking! I have really enjoyed and developed my one word for the last several years and hopefully, this word will also work for me in 2010. PRODUCTIVITY!

I'm thinking my word is going to be Remember. Each month will be a focus on something I need to Remember. Eg. Remember its better to give than to receive (might be the thought for December). Eg. Remember to eat a balanced diet & excercise regularly (might be the thought for January). Looking forward to this in 2010. Thanks for the inspiration Ali.

Last year I focused on myself. It was somethign I really needed to do. I worked on my innerself by becoming more focued on what I needed in my life and what was truly important for me. My word for this year is HOME. I want to focus more on my home this year ... to make it a place of comfort, nourishment, love, peace and soul for my family and friends.

I was just thinking about this yesterday and wondering if you'd be blogging about it again. My word for 2010 is organize! The word I used for 2009 was determined and it worked out pretty well for me!

loved reading everyone's words! so inspiring. my word is ::: habit ::: i tend to waste time dreaming and planning instead of doing. i've been reading many books on photography and creativity this past month and every one of them mentions how doing something every day can create a habit that will unleash your creativity and your art. i will be doing the photo-a-day thing. can't wait.
