Revisiting A Favorite Project: Punch Collage
Some of you may remember a Martha-inspired butterfly punch project using the classic butterfly punch I did two years ago (February 08).
I decided to revisit the project again, this time using a heart punch.
I punched all the hearts from a variety of different patterns and laid them out on a piece of cardstock to figure out where I wanted each one placed. Once I had them all organized I adhered each heart using a foam square.
This time I also added a couple little accents: tiny pearls and some acrylic hearts (from an older Fancy Pants acrylic sheet) attached with mini-fasteners from Tim Holtz. Pattern papers came from my scraps. I wanted papers that included primarily yellow, orange, a bit of pink and a bit of gray - thinking a cross between Valentine's and spring.
EDITED : About the frame and mat, I have had this one for years (7+). Most likely I purchased it at either Target or Fred Meyer. The size of the opening is 8x10. A nice thing to look for when selecting a frame for this project is the double mat with the second mat lifted up off the first - it makes room for the dimension of the punches (that comes from the foam squares). I used a piece of swiss dot cardstock for the background.
Simple. Fun. Easy. I love punches.

I loved this project before, and I still love it today. However, I tried to mimic the pattern using 12x12 paper and 9 squares only to find that the hours I spent left me with a crooked end result. I'd like to compliment you on your fine work and find out how you were able to get every heart/butterfly so perfectly spaced.

I've made several of the butterfly version as gifts (and have one of my own on my ladder shelf) and I did make a heart version last year for my granddaughter and a choo choo train version for my grandson. All came out great! I agree - I love punches!

Love this project!! May I ask what size heart punch you used? Makes a perfect Valentine gift. :) Also how fun would it be to spell out a message with alphabet stickers or rub-ons on each heart. You have inspired me to do a project like this.
Thank you.

I love this! I think this might be a perfect gift idea for my husband this year ... with a recent change in our finances, we're focusing on lower-cost, from-the-heart sorts of gifts lately.
I can't tell for sure from the pictures ... is there glass in the frame, or is it just open?

Wow...love this. I have frames I pick up just for this type of project. My question is this...the foam squares would make it dimentional. I use them allot on some of my scrapbook pages. So is the frame a shadow box type frame??? Seems like a regular frame would smash the punch designs?

Alie,
I don't know how you do such incredible things day after day. You are my good morning inspiration every day. Thank you for sharing your God given tallents!
I wanted to ask you about your printers tray photo creation you have had on your blog. I have been serching for (what seems like forever) for the printers type tray that has the larger openings like yours. Is your tray a name brand (possibly it starts with an L)? I keep finding the trays but the openings are so very small.
I want to thank you again for sharing your gifts and talents. I know that I would not have completed 1/2 of the things for my family if it wasn't for the inspiration your blog gives to me everyday...
Have an incredible day!
Roberta

Love this project! Bummed that the weather is so horrible and cannot venture out to find a frame == maybe I have an old one hidden in a closet I can recycle. Thanks for the inspiration (and motivation!)

Yes, the frame has "foam" in between the two mats. You definitely need that when using the foam dots behind the punches.

Hi Nanette - I measured the widest part of the heart and it is just about 1 inch.
