One Little Word 2013

One Little Word necklace from Lisa Leonard.

My word for 2013 is open.

Last year I had a great story about how my word came to me. This year it was more of a whisper and to be honest I'm not really sure what it means for me right now, or what it will end up meaning for me 12-months from now. And I'm okay with that.

Open is an attitude and an approach. It's a reminder to live wholeheartedly, to enter the ring, to live the length and the width. It's how I want to tackle this year.

I love that open is an action & a re-action. I can act with an open heart; I can re-act with an open heart.

I want to be open to it all - the amazing and the challenging. Wide open.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2013. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

ONE LITTLE WORD WORKSHOP

Registration is open for 2013 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we  can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the  course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2013.

    Hi Ali,

my word for 2013 is GROW. It came to me very loud and at the very beginning of my thoughts of one little word. So I take it and live it. Even if I don´t know what it means for me right now.

My word is also GROW. I had a few words in mind (Create, Learn, Patience) but Grow stood out to me as a word which would allow me to do all that I wanted to achieve this year and perhaps some things that I haven't even realised yet. It's great to know that someone else has the same word :)

My word this year is Persevere

I hit shift + F7 while at work and the following words came up: persist, continue, keep at it, keep on, carry on, keep trying, stick with....

I have so many things I want to do this year and with prayer my hope is to persevere thru it all.

Philippians 4:13 is my phrase for 2013. Dream BIG!

My word for 2013 is "Breathe". I am going to be having my first child in March, at age 36. I am planning my wedding for next fall. I own & run a small daycare. I recently lost a dog that I loved like a child and have an 11yr old cat that is having health problems. To say I have been feeling overwhelmed lately is an understatement.

In one of my more hormonal moments, I was reminding myself out loud to breathe (lest I pass out) & it hit me. I need this to be next year's word. I need a bigger reminder to calm down, slow down & try to enjoy my life before it's gone & I can't remember how I got through it.

    Breathing is good.

My word is choose. One thing I have learned about myself from doing OLW for three years is that when my word is an action word, I make more progress. The first year, I chose patience but didn't feel like I did anything with it. The next year I was going to choose patience again, but the word accept kept coming to me. I fought it but finally I accepted (no pun intended) that it needed to be my word. I really worked on figuring out what things in my life were the way they were and couldn't be changed and needed to be accepted. This led me to a lot more patience. Funny how that worked.

Last year's word was joy. I kept a joy journal, but other than that, I didn't know what to do. I came to realize that for me the word was too conceptual. I need something more concrete. Choose came to me this fall. I am going to focus on choosing joy, choosing my reactions, choosing to listen more, etc. I am excited!

My word for 2013 is CREATE. This speaks to my need to take action more. It not only includes creating things, like sewing projects and memories with my family, but also how I can CREATE a better outcome based on my actions and responses.

I choose "simplify" my life, my way of scrapbooking (less is best), my kitchen, my ways of eating, my ways of thinking (not to over think everthing)

I've chosen PRACTICE as my word for 2013. This year my word has been action and now I realize that I need to take all these things I've started this year and practice them :) it is hard work to be a happy human so I'm looking forward to living in my practice and getting better and more consistent in life :)

Good word! I am a terror for this. I want to be perfect the first time I try and if I'm not I get disheartened and give up! I'm sure you will rock it.

My word for 2013 is TESTIFY, from the song, Testify to Love...

For as long as I shall live
    I will testify to love
I'll be a witness in the silences
    When words are not enough
    With every breath I take
I will give thanks to God above
For as long as I shall live
    I will testify to love
