A Year With George Washington Edwards

About this time last year we adopted a one-year-old cat from our local Humane Society (you can read that story here).

George has been the most awesome addition to our family. We had hoped for a cat that would be equal parts playful and cuddly and that's exactly George.

Simon was really the one who wanted a cat.

As he would tell you straight-out in his matter-of-fact manner, "I'm a fan of cats."

George and Simon definitely have a special relationship that's continued to grow over the year. I often find him sleeping on Simon's bed when he's at school and if he's inside when the bus drops Simon off he often runs downstairs to greet him.

He's indoor/outdoor just like a dog.

That was a total win as far as I'm concerned.

Yea, he's kinda like a person sometimes.

And other times he's just like a cat.

I'm also a pretty big cat fan so having this guy here has been therapeutic for all of us this past year.

He and Lily are definitely pals.

And for those of you who are bigger dog fans, Lily's been doing pretty good considering her age since being really sick two summers ago.

Super thankful for this little guy in our lives even when he brought us two snakes (once inside) last summer. As Simon likes to repeat (and I so agree) from Indiana Jones, "I hate snakes."

We love you George!

Reading this makes me miss having a cat in the house. Mine died 2.5 years ago. We have two outside but kali would cuddle up on my back. I loved that feeling. Miss her.

So funny. Our cat must be his twin. Same name (George), a stray, an in/out cat, and really lovey (he's like a dog). Oh... And he always sleeps with my oldest son too.

We have 2 girly cats and they enrich our lives. One of ours is very sensitive especially when I am ill and does not leave my side, snuggling a little closer to my neck.
I suspect that George knows ALL about Simon and makes it his daily goal to soothe him. They are just like that! How quickly a year goes by!

I love your pet posts. I haven't been a big fan of cats in the past but I've had cats. I'm generally allergic to cats, BUT I'm considering fostering kittens for our local humane society. I've been fostering puppies which I LOVE but often kitten foster homes are in dire need so I may step into that. I'm sure it will be a blast since I love animals. George Washington looks like he has a ton of personality. I'm so glad that Lily is doing well.

I am so glad you shared George's 1st year with us! I am a total cat fan! My hubby and I adopted our little shelter cat, Catapult, nearly 2 years ago. We picked her out at 1 week and adopted at 5 weeks, and she has blessed our house with never-ending entertainment! Thank goodness for our furry friends!

Your George is SO much like our Jack (and looks an awful lot like him too!!) He has a brother Sedona who is huge and more like a dog LOL Our pets do bring the extra love we need sometimes. Glad your George found your family to adopt.

Hey Ali--Did you guys train George to be an indoor/outdoor cat or did he come to you that way? My boys desperately want another cat but I just can't deal with the whole litter box thing again.

I LOVE that Simon says "I am a fan of cats". My son Charlie says "I am a fan of...." for so many things. Love that you named the cat George. Love the pictures and the post.

You've captured George brilliantly! He reminds me a lot of our cat Spooky from his b&w markings. We so want a dog but are afraid our cats wouldn't like him/her. Nice to see that your pets are friends!

Being cat lovers ourselves (Manx x2)

I enjoyed the story of "George Washington" Edwards arrival and loved the story of Simon choosing a name. Truly hard to believe it's been a year already, Ali.

Love the photos of George and yourself appearing to have caught a "cat nap". Along with George stretching out on his back on the couch. Totally made me laugh. Tuxedo cats have so much character.

    TFS...

My sister has two rescued cats that constantly bring dead birds etc. and lay them at the front door! A lady once told her that cats are never "beholding" to anyone, so they are paying for their care and showing you they can work for their keep. Maybe just an old wives tale, but kind of a cute story.

It was a delight to read George Washington Edwards year in review. Pets so fill our lives with love and self acceptance.
I live with Henry George, also a tuxedo and Jack Charles, a tabby also known as a tweed blazer.
    Enjoy the day.

I love your photos of George! My daughter and one of our cats have a very special relationship. I laughed when I saw George on Simon's Lego table. I wonder if he knocks everything down like our Gizmo does? That's the only time Chloe gets mad at him, and she always forgives him pretty quickly!
