How Do You Read Blogs?
Tags:Have you read the news that Google Reader is going away?
Which leads me to my next question...
How do you read blogs these days?
Via a reader? Via email? Via bookmarks?
I've been using Feedly for a bit now and love the clean streamlined design plus it looks great on my ipad which is where I tend to read blogs the most (thanks to Peppermint for the tip on that one a few months back). I also just have a set of bookmarks in Firefox toolbar that includes blogs I like to visit from time to time. I do have a couple blogs I subscribe to via email that I really don't want to miss.
Thoughts?

I have always bookmarked them. I never knew google reader existed until I entered a contest on a page and I had more chances to win if I used it. But after I signed up for it, it sent me a notice that it was going away. Good thing I didn't become to attached..:) lol

Still on Google Reader and procrastinating the change. Will likely go to Feedly but, as usual, letting things settle a bit before making a decision. Pretty peeved with Google right now for running Bloglines (my old reader) outta town and then just walking. Your blog....very first one in my list of favorites and always the first one I read if you have a new post. :) You rock!

Wow I didn't know there was any other way other than bookmarks. Can't wait to try out some of thesse other suggestions.

Initially it was Bloglines, then Google Reader, but I never was delighted with Reader, it was just the most convenient. I like Feedly, but am having problems, partly because they are overwhelmed, partly because I can't control the version of Firefox, etc., that I can use on my work pc. Am still checking into things like Blogloving, theOldReader, etc. Haven't yet settled onto one. I only use bookmarks as a backup, and would hate to clutter up my email that way. I follow too many blogs for that to be remotely feasible.

I read blogs via email. I personally to not care for feeds - it's just one more place to have to go.
Ali, the new class at BPC - this sounds like you'll be creating "paper" layouts vs. digital layouts - is that correct?
Replies
Hi Lynn - they will likely be paper based that include hybrid elements (digital pieces I print out, etc) which is the main way I usually create layouts. For the last 12-week class I did (Yesterday & Today) I included digital layered templates each week but I'm not sure I will do that for this class because I'm doing three layouts per week vs. one. Most likely the class will include digital downloads/printables, just not sure on actual digital templates just yet.

I've been using Feedly for a couple years now and have loved it! Like you, I like the clean look. I like how easy it is to organize and stay connected with the blogs I follow.

I love Feedly; tried bloglovin and perhaps I hadn't figured out the best way to set it up but didn't like it.
I have a favorites folder in feedly that I try to limit to 10. Then I have specific folders like foodie blogs, linky blogs, design blogs, photography blogs, and only go peeking in those occasionally.
I'm curious to hear which blogs are your "don't want to miss" email subscriptions! I have only 2 or 3---one is Seth Godin, which cracks me up because I don't normally subscribe to blogs in his field but I love his posts and they are short enough (and not visual) that they're perfect for email.

I use the Pulse to read all of my blogs. I love the visual interface so I can see what I've read and what might be interesting to me. I'll have to look into Feedly. I love getting the teaser to some of your blog entries through FB, too!

I've used Reader for a while now and sad it is going away. I love it because it was connected to my Gmail account allowing for easy access anywhere without having to download software on my computers. Also, it allowed me to read blog updates directly in the Reader w/o having to load the blog on my computer. I usually only go over to the actual blog only when I want to leave a comment. This is useful especially when I'm at work, and don't want to click on too many websites. Does anyone know of a similar set up? Thank you.

I've been all over the place and am still trying to figure out the best way to follow blogs. Previously, I used Google Reader, then I figured out how to get e-mail updates (from some blogs), then iGoogle came along (but that'll be ending in November) and lots of bloggers have suggested Bloglovin' which I'm trying and is pretty good, but I'm still not crazy about it...After what you had to say and other's comments, I'm thinking about trying Feedly - my biggest desire is that it show an image (since I'm so visual) and it looks like it does that. If I could get all the blogs that I follow in one place that would be awesome!

I've used Google Reader for years. I loved to cruise through the titles of the blogs that were in there while standing in some line or waiting at a kids sports practice. I would bookmark anything I thought I wanted to read more in depth and then "mark all as read" keeping it cleaned out. I had a small panic panick moment ofterafter Googles announcement until I did some research and found Feedly. Its been a little rocky switching over over, mostly trying to figure out their format so I could continue to be a creature of habit, but I think I'm finally getting it and will like Feedly better then Google in the long run.

I use Outlook - when I click on Bookmarks in Mozilla Firefox, it has an option "Subscribe to this page". When that comes up, Outlook is an option. So it downloads it right into Outlook. It's been the easiest way for me so far. It's not really Email, it's under "RSS Feeds" in Outlook.

I love to get blog updates sent to my email, basically because I just don't have the time to blog-hop. Please don't stop sending them!!

I use bloglovin - its free = sucks in all the blogs you're following from ireader/igoogle. And like ireader - shows up when an update is made. I miss the other stuff from igoogle, but this is convenient and so far so good.

I was a longtime Bloglines user until they tricked us into thinking it was going away (but then it didn't) and I had already jumped ship to what I felt like was the inferior Google Reader... but now I really depend on Reader, so, ugh. I have been playing with Feedly too--and read through Flipboard on my iPad. Apparently Flipboard has the demise of Google Reader handled (right now they work together) so I've not been worrying about it too much.

feel silly asking this but is google reader the same as the blogger dashboard?? I have a reading list at the home page to blogger (google product) and I go there for seeing snippets of the blogs I follow... I have seen several bloggers I follow comment about this change but never got a notification from google about it.
Or, I add blogs to FlipBoard - an app I love on my iPad that I use for reading articles/news.
no worries... we'll still find/follow you Ali!
