One Little Word® 2019 | Habit

Since 2006 I've been choosing a single word to focus on over the course the 12 months from January through December. I call it One Little Word®. It's a personal growth project that uses memory keeping as the vehicle to help us live with intention.

My past words have included:

  • Play
  • Peace
  • Vitality
  • Nurture
  • Story
  • Light
  • Up
  • Open
  • Thrive
  • Give
  • Whole
  • Connect
  • Space

For 2019 I'm going to focus on the word habit

In selecting a word I'm choosing to use that word as a lens for my year. I'm choosing to get curious about the habits I currently have in place and the habits I might like to adopt. I want to ask questions about why I do certain things and not others and continue getting to the heart of the matter for myself - spending time and energy on the things that matter most vs. the things that matter least.

One of the habits I want to cultivate most is a "more days than not" yoga practice. I want it to become habit. I have a hard time putting it at the top of my list and I'd like to make that happen this year.

You're invited to join me in choosing word and working to make it visible in your own life in 2019.

TAKE A LISTEN

Interested in hearing more? I recently recorded two podcasts with friends as we gear up to 2019 chatting about One Little Word®:

SHARE YOUR WORD IN THE COMMENTS

I’d love to read what word you’ve chosen or are considering for 2019. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. Next week I’ll combine all the words into a single post – it's become tradition and super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word®, you can read some of my previous posts here:  20072008200920102011201220132014201520162017 and 2018

JOIN ME IN MAKING OUR WORDS VISIBLE

Since 2011 I've been offering a One Little Word® online workshop that's goal is to help you stay connected to your word throughout the year. It's not complicated and it doesn't take a lot of time. Each month you receive an email reminder to head back to the classroom for some sort of creative prompt/writing reflection. As with most years, the majority of the prompts will be similar to last year as I find that I enjoy the process of doing the same prompts with different words each year - it's never the same. I record all new videos each year that include my personal reflections on the process with my new word.

You can read all the details about this workshop and sign up here. You can watch a video walkthrough of my past album projects here to get an idea of past prompts. Registration is $5 off until December 31, 2018. I've also created a selection of products to help you document your journey with your word - check those out here.

Also, something new for 2019 is a One Little Word® Journal. If you are looking for different way to connect with your word outside the workshop or as a supplement to your workshop prompts this might be an awesome opportunity to get closer to your word this year. You can read more about it and see additional images here

My wonderful little heart talisman in the photo at the top of this post is from Liz Lamoreux and is available on her site as part of her Pocket Talisman Collection

My word for 2019 (the first time I put this in print) Take. I plan to take action, take a break, take charge, take time for myself, etc. I simply love doing OLW. I have been part of this workshop for 5 years. Last year I did not show up very often. I hope to change that this year and take time for myself each month to complete OLW.

I know Ali is a big reader and since her word is habit - has she read "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg. Extremely interesting book. I recommend it to everyone!

For 2019 I have chosen the word HOME. This was going to be my word for 2018, however I decided to go with a different word. RIGHT NOW in my life I feel the pull to explore this word and why it is so important to me.

I am staying with my 2018 word Compassion. I am still drawn to it and feel that I’m not finished with all I have to learn yet.

In the middle of reading The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. Powerful insights into individual, organizational, and societal habits. I think you would find it really cool!

This is my first year taking the class. Last year my word was victory and it manifested in many ways in my life. This year I have chosen fearless as my word. I want to step out of my comfort zone in 2019. I am looking forward to getting started tomorrow.

Steady! When I read this definition, something clicked: regular, even, and continuous in development, frequency, or intensity.

hello friends. I am still grappling with what word I will be exploring this year - there are 3 contenders: ease, voice and joy.

My Dad unexpectedly passed away last year and it threw us into a tailspin (no will, the probate/estate process, complicated blended family dynamics, stress and mess as the personal representative and trying to manage everything from thousands of miles away). Tough stuff. But I'm ready for a year of taking things easy - of taking care of myself, of easing into this next phase of life. In this process/past year, both at home and at work, I feel like I've lost my voice. It feels like it is time to find my voice again, to speak up, speak out, and be heard. And joy -- so much of this year was full of grief and sorrow. I'd like to invite more joy in my life. Since my Dad was so young, I am feeling a need to seek joy and celebrate life.
I hope to get some clarity and have one word rise to the top soon.

This is the 9th year I've chose OLW to guide me through the new year. Many have been transformative, but I lost track of last year's so this year I signed on for the OLW class to prompt me to pay better attention. Here are my OLWs - past and present-
    2011: Finish
    2012: Balance
    2013: Do
    2014: Simplify
    2015: Simplify
    2016: Mindful
    2017: Joy
    2018: Nourish
    2019: Yes!

My word this year is RESPECT. I've very excited to do the work to figure out what exactly this word means to mean and to the relationships I have in my life.

I think I need to stop fighting it and just embrace it. Hello Grit. Last year it was about finding my Spark and I loved that word. To me, spark helped me get loads of projects started but I really want to be a finisher. I feel the need to get gritty and embrace the mess of this phase of our life. My companion words are Grace, Kind, and Enough. Because I’m gonna need to remember to give myself grace and kindness when I mess up. I almost switched to Enough because it also seems to fit right now too. Bring on 2019! Loved reading everyone’s words and excited to be on this journey with you all!

My word for 2019 is ABUNDANCE. I want to focus on feeling that I have an abundance of many things, but especially time, love, and patience. The whole “believe it and it’s true” thing. I want to feel like I have an abundance of time, then I can read more and craft more. I want to feel that I have an abundance of love and patience to deal with a (screaming!) newborn. And who knows what other abundance I will find in 2019!

This was my word this year. One of my favorite parts was noticing the natural light through the seasons - I hadn't really thought about that part of the word initially. Hope it proves a good companion for your year. Take care!
