Three Things : Lines (and a Designer Digitals giveaway)
One of the easiest ways I have found to add journaling to my projects is to incorporate products that include lines just waiting for words. They invite words.
[ Or I can always just pull out the pen + ruler and get those lines on there myself. Whatever is least complicated at the moment tends to be my choice. ]
Here's a look at some of my favorite products that showcase the simple beauty of lines:
Karen Russell Narratives Scalloped Lined Paper : Probably one of my all time favorite lined papers (next to the old Making Memories Ledger paper). I love that bit of scallop around the edge.
Technique Tuesday's Storyteller's Ledger Stamp : A great stamp for jotting down information and telling bits of a story on layouts, cards, minibooks, etc. Completely versatile.
Luxe Simple Lined Double-Sided Paper : Quickly becoming a favorite, this lined paper is a part of Luxe's Simply Luxe line (essentially lines + dots). Check out the grid, ledger, and pinstriped verisions as well.
Mug Memo Notebook from Fishs Eddy : This mug inspired the line theme this week. Such a happy mug. And watch out for lots of other cool things in this shop. Check out the other memo/line-inspired mugs and trays here.
In addition to Three Things today I am exicted to offer a giveaway of my first collection of layered templates and brushes from Designer Digitals. Leave a comment below with your favorite tip for getting words down on your projects (and not leaving them blank for a "someday-down-the-road-I-will-add-the-journaling"). A winner will be drawn at 5pm Pacific on Wednesday.
[ Three Things is a weekly product series : check out the archives here. ]
Good Morning!!
This has been a problem for me in the past. I would save my journaling for later, thinking something brilliant, other than my real story, would hit me.
Now I pull my photos, write my story and THEN scrapbook it.
I also refer to my JOURNAL 10+
http://www.journal10.com/
I look back for great blubs about what we did, pull the photos for the story and then scrap it.
LOVING the LINES!

Well, I always make it a point to write on my pages - I love writing on the photos, around it and on journal strips. But honestly, I always design my page with space for journaling already so it is easier for me. Sometimes, I journal telling the story, or journal like I was speaking to my children (or husband). Blog entries make very very personal scrap pages - I love it.
Nowadays, I love finding ways to incorporate the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN on to my pages with one words. It helps.

I try to keep a notebook handy, and after I have taken pictures, or come home from a event. I write down memories then so when it comes time to journal I can remember details...I keep my journal markers and pens close to hand so that I can grab them and the journalling boxes easily.

I type in my online journal everyday. Sometimes I write in sentences, sometimes just snippets of info. I also use Stacy Julians idea from her photo freedom book of keeping small notebooks around the house and in my car so i can write something when the moment strikes me. I can then add it to my journal or to a file of quotes each day.

loving those lines!
i like to write things down as i'm living my life, so when it comes to journaling i don't have to stop and think about what happened or worry about forgetting things!

I keep a daily journal of our family's daily happenings + take lots of photos. I don't usually scrap right away, so when I see a photo I was to scrap, I just turn to that page in my journal to get the full story as I saw it on that particular day. LOVE your designs -- looking forward to Designer Digi work from you!

It's easiest for me all around, if I start with the words FIRST. Either jotting them down in a notebook as they happen, recording them on my blog, or just sitting down at my work area and writing the words before I glue anything down. I don't make every single page this way, but every single one of my FAVORITE pages has been made this way. :) Thanks for the chance, Ali!

I have actually taken my tip from you and do my journaling before I start my layout, that ensures that it will get done. I also carry a notebook around with me all the time, so if I'm inspired to write something I'll have a place to put it.
Ali, I'm not sure if you know this, but your blog has been crashing a bit the past couple days. It takes few tries to get in. I asked on two peas and a few people were having the same trouble. Just an fyi! :)

I scrap to tell stories. Sometimes my pictures need little to get the message across. Ususally this is not the case so when I plan my pages I always incorporate space for the journalling. I write my story first. That determines whether I journal on the computer - long story = computer; short story = handwriting. Without the journalling my page is not complete.

I make myself finish the page first before I go on to another scrapbook page. I try to think of journaling items before I put the pictures down on the page, sometimes making notes on back of pictures.

I like to save a couple pages at a time that are within the same theme and journal them both while the memories are fresh. I experimented with lined paper this past weekend and was grateful for it. I also really like the look of journaling around the page or around a picture.

I digi scrap, so the journaling seems to HAVE to be done before I can finish the LO
But I also keep a notebook for "to do's" and in it is a section devoted just for LO ideas..and on most of them...I will put the idea and journaling ...if I don't write things down, I sit down to do the LO and its gone.....
Thanks for sharing

that mug is something i need! =)
i find that the picture will usually tell the story and will help to words flow on to paper. if that isn't the case i try to find a word i want to highlight and work around the word/words

I always think of my words while I'm relaxing, usually at Starbucks, looking through magazine ads. The ads will inspire me with a phrase, I write it down on a napkin, think of the photos or the person it corresponds to and then write away on my little torn up napkin. I have tons of written on napkins lying around my scraproom just waiting for me to do their layouts. But instead, I sit here reading blogs . . .

J*U*S*T D*O I*T...try not to get too caught up in "perfect" (very hard for me)...i tell myself, it is better to have the journaling in there than never doing the "go back & add later"...
thanks ali for the inspiration & always making us think!

Since journaling is my least favorite thing to do on a scrapbook page, I try and use a tag or some sort of small element - that way I at least have room for the date and main information, but don't have to spend a ton of time reflecting (I know...sounds awful!).

Whenever I don't feel like journaling, I just make myself write the 5 W's. this usually get's things flowing.

i honestly have to say this is the hardest for me. it's really hard for me to write on my pages. so i will write what i want to say on a sticky note and put it on the page for a day when i feel okay to write.
love the lines. also a lover of karen russell's paper.
thanks, ali.

I just love to incorporate my words/journaling into the art-project in some way. If I plan to leave room for a Journaling-Block or something it never turns out - in the end there's never room left and my Layouts end up without Journaling. So lately I write around photos - along swirls or other elements - or along/inside the pattern on patterned paper - or fill empty space on the photo itself with workds ... works fine for me and this way I always get at least SOME Journaling on my Pages.

Between my blog and a notebook that I use to quickly write stories of events, I always have something for journaling.

I'm a digi scrapper, so I journal as soon as I do the page.
But I was also the same way when I was a paper scrapper... If I did a page, I did the WHOLE thing.
I also keep a journal with my feelings and what has been going on so that I can always go back to see what was going on in my life during the time I took the pics!!!

OK.. I'm old school- I make an outline or list of things to say.... BUT you need the right paper (soft) and the right pen- it just has to feel right coming out, you know? I'm cheap- Papermate blue or the chunky clear pens from the local store- in blue! I can't wait until school shopping- because I will buy pens for journaling- for me!

Little journaling spots definitely do it for me. Somehow they help me tell the perfect story - knowing that I have a little space to fill always works.
