Three Things : Lines (and a Designer Digitals giveaway)
Tags:One of the easiest ways I have found to add journaling to my projects is to incorporate products that include lines just waiting for words. They invite words.
[ Or I can always just pull out the pen + ruler and get those lines on there myself. Whatever is least complicated at the moment tends to be my choice. ]
Here's a look at some of my favorite products that showcase the simple beauty of lines:
Karen Russell Narratives Scalloped Lined Paper : Probably one of my all time favorite lined papers (next to the old Making Memories Ledger paper). I love that bit of scallop around the edge.
Technique Tuesday's Storyteller's Ledger Stamp : A great stamp for jotting down information and telling bits of a story on layouts, cards, minibooks, etc. Completely versatile.
Luxe Simple Lined Double-Sided Paper : Quickly becoming a favorite, this lined paper is a part of Luxe's Simply Luxe line (essentially lines + dots). Check out the grid, ledger, and pinstriped verisions as well.
Mug Memo Notebook from Fishs Eddy : This mug inspired the line theme this week. Such a happy mug. And watch out for lots of other cool things in this shop. Check out the other memo/line-inspired mugs and trays here.
In addition to Three Things today I am exicted to offer a giveaway of my first collection of layered templates and brushes from Designer Digitals. Leave a comment below with your favorite tip for getting words down on your projects (and not leaving them blank for a "someday-down-the-road-I-will-add-the-journaling"). A winner will be drawn at 5pm Pacific on Wednesday.
[ Three Things is a weekly product series : check out the archives here. ]

I hang my layouts in my scrap room as soon as I am finished creating them, that way I have to write something, because I will see it everyday!

I love adding text to a photograph if it allows for it! Every time I see some empty space on a photograph my mind starts racing as to what words I can put on it or what journaling to type on it in Photoshop. It's such an easy thing to do and I love the look of it! Thanks, Ali! :-D

OOOOOO more yummy stuff! I usually jot my thoughts on a little notepad to help with journaling later.

I keep a journal and also carry a little notebook in my purse and jot things down so I remember the details and my feelings about things. When it comes time to do the page, I often write a rough draft of what I want to say on scratch paper so that I don't miss details I want to include. If it's a theme album, I may also have journaling notes and quotes in page protectors or envelopes with the pictures before I do the pages.

i'm a compulsive list and "notes to self" writer so i almost always journal from those notes and ideas. also, the photos usually evoke some memory or emotion that i want to document.
thanks for all of your inspiration!

holy cow - look at all the tips!
I'm not big on journalling - just yet. I'm trying to work on that. But I do always jot down the names, date and location and for that I love labels. Scenic Route, SEI, Jenny Bowlon - all of the pretty cardstock quality labels, and even more I love to layer them before jotting down text. And Heidi Swapp journal spots.

Thanks for all the inspiration Ali! I can't wait for your digital designs to come out.
What I do to get my journaling done is to consider the layout/project I am working on "not complete" until the journaling is done. If I am in a rut and don't know what to write down, I'll walk away from the layout/project for a hours (or even days). When I come back refreshed, I always know what to journal about. But I never move on to the next layout/project until the current one is complete - and that means complete with journaling.

Usually, I like to type my journaling, and sometimes I do it beforehand which makes it ready to go when I do a layout. However, I find that if I journal with a black pen in the moment, that usually is the best way that I make sure journaling gets done.

My tip for journaling is that I immediately upon finishing the layout do my journaling. Even if it isn't 'eloquent' I get it down. Usually I am thinking of the journaling/my feelings of the moment while doing the layout, so it is the perfect time to do it!

For journaling I ask my husband for help (if I scrap about us of course). He is awesome in writting and he knows about that!
Besides English is my second language so this way I avoid making mistakes too when he checks what I wrote. Have a nice summer.

I use journaling from my blog...for some reason it's easier for me to blog about the photos I've taken/things we've done than to write on a page. So, I blog first and journal second.

I can't work without a piece of scrap paper. I sketch layouts and write out titles and journaling as I work. Sometimes I start with the journaling, sometimes I think on it while I lay out the page. But I always write it out once on scrap paper and then write it (type it, sticker it) the second time for the final version.

When I am scrapping and gabbing with all my gal pals, telling the stories of what we are scrapping at the moment help bring the journaling to the forefront. In addition to that, I usually keep stickie notes and memorabilia about the event with the photos until I can find the time to scrap 'em.

If it's lenghtly, I tend to type it up first to make sure it sounds right, etc. Then I'll either print it out, or use it to handwrite.
If it's a short blurb, I tend to just write it on the page. Often, I end up not really pleased with how it's written, the spacing isn't right, etc. but I try to get over it, and just be glad that it's written! Life's too short and there's not enough time to worry about things like that. :)

i think 95% of my layouts start with a story so there is always journaling in my head. if i can't get to that layout yet, i will write it in a word doc and then save it to the desktop so as to continue to prod my creative-ness until i can get to that layout. i have journaled since i was 14, so that part is really easy for me.
love love all the journaling products out there. they easily find their way into my personal journal as well as notes around the house. there not just for scrapbooking anymore.
yeah...another give away...i am always so hopeful.
thanks ali.

Love the three things products this week... and especially love that mug! My favorite tip for journaling first starts with the mentality that words are an important part of every layout / story. From there, I'm currently loving all the cute journaling spot stamps. Stamp one journaling spot for to-the-point journaling, stamp as many as you need for long journaling!

I love that mug. Way cool.
Sometimes I'm so busy adding the photos and making sure they look right that I almost forget to include journaling. So I try to make sure that I write something - even if it's just who, what and when. Because I get totally frustrated looking back at pictures of family members and not knowing who they are, where they are and when it is.

I usually leave the journaling to the end of my project. Sometimes, we just need a word, sometimes, its a phrase or a sentence and sometimes it is an entire page. Thats why I usually leave it to the end to see how the project reveals itself. I have started many a project thinking it would be one way and completely comes out another, that is why I wait.
Ali, thank you for your inspiration!

I use a combination of 12x12 paper that is ledger lined and I have a "journaling basket" set up within arms reach. In that basket are label stickers, MM notebook journal things, Heidi Swapp spots, chipboard with lines on it, etc. I find it a very inviting way to journaling.
I also like to draw a line as a design element and write along it!
