Three Things : Creative Books (+ a giveaway)
Tags:Three books to inspire, challenge and fill you up creatively this week:
True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling by LK Ludwig : I got to meet LK at Artfest last year and enjoyed her art just about as much as her personality. I ordered this book last night and am looking forward to some new ideas (it's been quite awhile since I picked up my art journal). After looking through the next book on the list (see below) I have some good ideas for backgrounds to try.
Acrylic Revolution by Nancy Reyner : This book is packed full with techniques for working with acrylic paint. I have been looking through it the last couple of evenings, dreaming about potentially doing some painting, and being really inspired to get out my paints and try something new and different (new + different for me).
Taking Flight: Inspiration And Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wingsby Kelly Rae Roberts : I was lucky to see an advanced copy of this book on my recent girl's weekend and I can't wait to get my own. There are a bunch of mixed media how-to's as well as a lot of words (of which you know I am a fan - I like to know the thoughts behind the actions whenever possible). According to Kelly Rae, "this book isn't a traditional how-to book, but rather a book that dives deeper into telling our stories about how we came into the creative life - as a way to inspire others to stretch their wings and see what is possible for their own creativity."
Here's one of the Amazon reviews on this book:
I have two copies of Taking Flight to give away this week. To be entered into the drawing leave a comment below and let me know about your favorite creative technique is these days (it can be scrapbooking, mixed media, anything). Comments will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm Pacific and the winners announced shortly after.

I am a scrapbooker, and my favorite creative technique lately seems to be layering. I like layering embellishments, papers, etc... This book looks like it would be very inspirational. Thanks for the great give-away..

My favorite creative technique of the moment is my long love crochet. Doing a blanket right now.. ideal to be sitting under while reading... yep, books!

Creative technique: at the moment it's coloring with my almost two year old. She loves pencils, I can't get her to care about crayons or colored pencils so I use color and she uses my mechanical pencils.

OOh love all these books, thanks for sharing them. Right now I am just getting into acrylic albums, really love the look of them but have been wary of working with them until now.

Lately I've been trying to concentrate on my words and emotions on my scrapbook pages. I struggle with that a lot. Taking Flight seems to be just what I need to help me along.
In a few weeks my teenage daughter and I are taking a online mixed media class by Paulette Insall. Her paintings are fabulous and inspirational!

Hi, thanks for sharing these 3 tips! My favo technique (well i'm actually not a technique person :) is using acrylic paint on corrugated box-cardboard (if that is what it is called? :) love the rough textured look it gives.

For the last two years I've challenged myself to think outside the box and try new techniques. My current favorite is layering. I love to create depth by layering acrylics over photo's or journaling as well as bring a minibook alive by adding 3 dimensional items like drawer pulls or chipboard letters. For me creating is all about making someone want to "touch".

Lately I have been posting my favorite photos on flickr with long blog-like comments. As part of a group of women committed to posting one picture everyday (Pirate Girls Four!) we've all found it a great way to stay connected with each other and see the beauty around us more intensely.

Mixed media is my thing, I love to add bits of recycled stuff and old cardboard... I love making minibooks too - but sometimes I wish I could just get on and do some scrapbooking, lol.
Thanks for the giveaway :)

I scrap, and am loving the use of my circle and square punches right now. Simple, yet you can do so many fun things with them.

Mixed media is my thing here lately. I love taking something and turning it into something awesome. Love making paper bag and chipboard mini-books...Scrap booking always has a way of sneaking back into my art.
Thanks for the giveaway.

Been out of the creative groove for a bit but I'm slowly getting back in. I love mixed media - putting in brochures, receipts and fun scraps of stuff along with stickers, photos and words. The trick is keeping it uncluttered while still adding layers of memories.
I'm so excited about Kelly Rae's book and so glad you featured it! :)

Oh yes! I would totally love one of those books! I am such a fan of stitching...I just want to make everything a tactile experience? I can't get enough of this idea that you can mix photos and sewing. I would love to paint more, too, but I am super afraid! Junelle

I just bought a manual typewriter for my almost 6 year old son to play with. He is very smart but speech delayed so I'm always looking at fun and creative ways for him to learn. My 16 year old son has been typing my 6 year old notes so I have been collecting them and using them in mini book about brothers. It shows "real life" and the playful interaction between brothers (very different that girls) My 16 year old's latest note to his brother on his early birthday party day was:
Happy birthdy
Colin
you will get no presents
-will
When I scrap that note I will probably write
"Don't believe everything your brother tells you" and have a picture of my son and his presents.
I love the manual typewriter because the type is not even, letters are darker and lighter than each other. They don't use capitals all the time and misspelled words. It looks like it's from an old typewriter!
