One Little Word 2009 & Giveaways
Tags:I am so excited to embark on a new word for 2009.
My word is nurture.
For me, especially with a new baby on the way within the next month or so, I have been thinking a lot about nurturing. It's such a soft, slow, gentle word.
There are many things in my life I would like to focus on nurturing this coming year. Our new baby girl. Simon and the transition to big brotherhood. My relationship with Chris. Photography. Patience. My business & this blog.
I am also going to be conscious of nurturing myself during this time of major transition in our lives.
There is something very special about this word for me. It represents slowing down, simplifying, and pinpointing what is really important to me in my life (not just the next 365 days). I am nervous and excited and so looking forward to what is to come.
The idea behind the one little word concept is to give yourself something to focus on throughout the year. As I stated in my newsletter back in January 2007, "A single word can be a powerful thing. It can be the ripple in the pond that changes everything. It can sharp and biting or rich and soft and slow."
Also from that same newsletter:
I can't wait to see all the words for 2009.
To celebrate the new year I have three very special giveaways - all directly related to this project. Two beautiful pieces of jewelry and one piece of art to celebrate your word.

I've been thinking a lot about my word for this year. Last year my word was "present" but it unfortunately got lost for awhile in issues of health and anxiety. I've been tossing around a few words the past couple of days, including joy, content, simplify and balance. I think I've finally settled on "balance" as my word for 2009. A good reminder to balance stress with relaxation, work with play, giving to everyone with me time, constant movement with stillness, etc. Thanks for this challenge every year. I look forward to it.
Happy New Year to you and your family!

Your blog is such a wonderful inspiration for me and I am sure so many others. Thank you so much for sharing your creations and thoughts with us.
My single word for this year is "Contentment." I struggle with enjoying where I am at; being content with where I am. I too am expecting another baby this year. My baby is a bit of a surprise baby, as my hubby and I were not planning on a third baby, but we are thrilled and overwhelmed at the same time. I think I need this word more than I thought I did. With so many changes on the horizon it will be important for me to focus on being content in the middle of the chaos.

Still working on my word. Not sure what it will be yet. I am really trying to procrastinate less and be more organized in the new year. I want to become a more punctual person. Planning to spend more time tonight thinking about how to capture that with one word.

HI ALI! I chose BALANCE this past fall and I am going to continue to work on that. Being a wife, mother, teacher, friend, scrapbooker...have had a really hard time with having balance in my life. I don't know how some women do it! Getting up at 5 am and not stopping until midnight has never been me! You continue to inspire me! I continue to wear my necklace from Lisa L. and it does remind me that I need to balance all aspects.Happy New Year to you and yours! 2009 is going to be GREAT!

Hello, Ali!
Two years ago I started this with "becoming" and last year was "fun" and I am still thinking about this year. Maybe "DO" or "Curiosity" or "Moments". Something that helps me to remember to cherish each moment, and to be more curious instead of so planned. More relaxed. I just can't pin it down quite yet.

My word for 2009 will be Focus. Keep focus on goals with children, keep focus when there are distractions. Keep my focus when accepting opportunities. Knowing when to say no.
I sure love words and this is a nice way to start the year off. Focus would look nice on the jewelry I think.
Thanks for all the thought provoking commentary.

Hey Ali--
I love your word choice for 2009!! It's a great word, one we can all relate to. We could all use a little nurturing!
I'm thinking of 2 words & trying to figure out which is the best fit for me this coming year...FOCUS or EMBRACE. Focus on my schooling, I'm in nursing school & it requires a lot of focus!! Focus on my family, spending as much time together as we can, focus on taking care of myself so I may to others, focus on getting out of debt so we can buy a home when I graduate, focus on the experience of nursing school, learning to care for
others, and learn an exciting new career. Focus on an excercise routine that will help destress me & make me feel healthier & stronger.
Or Embrace....embrace my family & all the wonderful things I love about them. Embrace my nursing school experience & the friends I am making. Embrace our little home in this beautiful place we live. Embrace a husband who is so good to me & loves me even more after 16 years od marriage!! Embrace my good health.
Funny...as I write all this out, I'm thinking my word for 2009 should be FOCUS. Seems to work best for me, with lots of possibilities!! Thanks for sharing your word & the chance doe a giveaway!!
Have a wonderful New Year!!

Thank you for this word challenge. Last year, my word was "grateful", and it changed my perspective so many times!
This year, I chose "fulfill" because I am ready to carry through for 2009.
Thanks again, Ali.

My word for 2009 is MINDFULNESS -- being more mindful of what I eat, how I treat others, how I spend money and my time, and how I care for my children. Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing so much of yourself with us! Have a wonderful 2009!

I am loving the idea of using a WORD to inspire me throughout the year. This year I have spent a lot of time with words and just recently found your site through Ruth at twowritingteachers.wordpress.com. After some contemplation, my word for the year is STRETCH. (Not too thin, I hope!) I need to stretch physically. As a teacher, I am always stretched mentally. I need to encourage my students to stretch. I also need to stretch myself out of comfortable routines in order to get more out of life.

My word for the new year is "embrace".
2009 is going to bring about lots of change for me and my household. Everything from a new president to a baby girl in a family of three boys.
So I am going to embrace change with open arms and an open heart. I can't wait!

My word for this year is participate. I have decided to quit thinking about what I want to do and to actually do it. I want to take full advantage of this life and the talents that I have been given. I want to PARTICIPATE in life. Watch out! The possibilites are endless. Thank you so much for giving me a reason to think about all of these things and to take some action!
Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.
