Dear Kokuyo Dot-N-Roller I Will Miss You So
Tags:
Yes, it's pretty silly and a tad melodramatic to be sad at the loss of my favorite adhesive.
But when you work with adhesive as much as I do, and you finally find one that is reliable and feels darn good in your hand, it's a big bummer to have it go away. Yep, in case you haven't heard yet Kokuyo will not be distributing the Dot N Roller in the US anymore.
I am starting to test out some other permanent brands including the Tombow Mono, the Therm-O-Web Memory Tape Runner (I like many of their other adhesives), and the 3L Easy Runner (which I don't like as much because I found that I like dots rather than tabs). I am still resisting that Scotch ATG mainly because it seems so big and bulky, but I might just have to try it after reading so many positive reviews both in comments here and elsewhere. If you use the ATG do you use the red one or the yellow one? Does it go on like dots or tabs?
So what are you testing out or using now?

ok you scared me.....I saw the pics up top and thought they were gone. I have both the Tombo and the 3L. I prefer the 3L above the Tombo, but use both. (When my 3L runs out I use the Tombo till I get more 3L)

The red ATG!! I resisted for a long time too because I thought it looked too big. It's amazing!!! I'm so glad I switched.

Only use Beacons 3 in 1 glue....N O T H I N G better out there. I very rarely use a tape cause this glue is SOOOOO amazing. It will make anything stick but is just tacky when first applied so you can move something if you are not happy with it. I found out about it 2 years ago at CKC and have not used another product since.

I have the red ATG, and I just love it. I think of the size as a benefit. It NEVER gets lost under a pile of something. :O)

I use mainly herma dotto removable and the RED ATG, which goes on in strips rather than dots or tabs (which I can't stand!)
It is bulky but it takes a lot longer to need refilling and for as much scrapping as you do, its very cost effective - check out here for the best prices I've seen. http://www.framingsupplies.com/3M/ScrapbookersTapeGunsandTapesPage.htm
good luck!

Oh no! I hadn't heard about this yet...and that is the only adhesive that I use! I'm seriously stressing. Ali--I hope you can give us all some good advice as to what adhesive we should use now!

Okay, this reply might be a little long winded . . . but I am really passionate about the adhesive that I use. There are many reasons for this, but I will fill you in on the most important : )
First of all, I have used pretty much every kind of adhesive that you can buy, and have tested them for "stick factor", "yellowing factor", "price point" and "ease of use". After compiling all of my information. I made the very obvious choice, and haven't looked back since then. My favorite adhesive of ALL TIME!!!!!!! 3M ATG GOLD ADHESIVE.
This adhesive sticks great, and compared with others, keeps on sticking. There were a number of adhesives that I have tried in the past 12 years or so, and I can't tell you how many projects I have had to recreate because pieces start to fall off. This is very frustrating to me. I don't know about the rest of you, but I purchase permanent adhesive because I want a "permanent" bond, not temporary. To date, I have never had to put anything back together that I have created using ATG adhesive. Bonus points received here : )
The next issue I looked into is the "yellowing" effect that many adhesives have on projects. Even though they claim to be archival safe. ATG Gold had the least amount of yellowing on my test strip.
The next factor in my decision is huge for many paper crafters. I think in order to be a paper crafter, it is a requirement that we are also frugal. {Smile} Always looking for a good deal right? Anyhow, I priced out all of the adhesives, and I will give you the results comparing my two "favorites": Tombo Mono & ATG Gold.
Tombo Mono: $4.50 per 472 inch refill
ATG Gold 1/4": $3.49 per 36 yds refill = {1296 inches}
ATG Gold 1/2": $7.98 per 60 yds refill = {2160 inches}
Just to clarify what you are seeing . . .
This info translates to:
Tombo Mono would cost $12.33 if you could get it in a 36 yd refill and would cost $20.61 if you could get it in a 60 yd refill.
That means that Tombo Mono is 3-4 times the cost of 3M ATG GOLD. MEGA BONUS POINTS HERE. So, by a landslide . . . 3M ATG GOLD is the winner in this analysis.
And, the final consideration I made was "ease of use". Yes, I would agree that the ATG gun is "bulky", but being able to see that bright yellow gun buried on my desk from anywhere is a big plus! Another plus for the ATG gun is that you can get the adhesive in such long rolls, therefor, you aren't having to refill your gun as often. A 60 yd ATG refill is the equivalent of 4 and 1/2 Tombo Mono's. Gotta love that! A couple of positives about the Tombo Mono is that it is so compact. It is much easier to travel with if you are going to a crop/party. In addition, the refills are easy-peasy to install {The 3M ATG Gun takes an extra minute or so to refill}
So, given all of this information, I clearly chose the 3M ATG Gun. I will occasionally use Tombo Mono, especially when I take projects on the road, but the majority of my paper crafting is done with my trusty 3M ATG Gun in hand : )
I hope this info will help you to take the plunge. and give the ATG gun a chance. I am certain that you won't be disappointed. The initial investment for the gun itself is about $45, but it pays for itself after using just four 60yd refills. And, from there on out, you will be saving about 65% on your adhesive!!!
I know, I know, I have gone on and on and on . . . Us paper crafting gals are really passionate about what we love aren't we? Hope this info helps : )
Here is the link to the framing supply website that seems to have the most reasonable prices on 3M ATG products!

Happy Hunting : )

this place says it has 312 in stock. you could buy up a bunch which would postpone your sadness.
I use the Tombow...it's "ok" - you have to roll it slow in order for all the adhesive to transfer and well, I don't have time to roll slow, so it's a pain.
I was trying the Duck brand - liked them but then I got a bunch of faulty ones...
Can't seem to find a good adhesive these days.

I use the ATG gun - mine was red, I spray painted it pink and have blinged it out (courtesy of scrap-lifting form a friend). I really do think it has the best sticking power and is the most cost effective - I order my rolls in bulk of 12 and I'm good for quite awhile. I too have tried the other's you listed, but prefer the gun - it's a stead stream of tape, not tabbed.

LOVE my ATG. I resisted for a long time because of the size, but I don't mind now that it's part of my repertoir. The adhesive is a solid strip instead of dots or tabs.

I have the red, or 1/4 inch ATG and really love it. I got used to the size very easily, and I don't lose it on my desk. That and the tombow mono tape are what I come back to again and again. I've used the ATG for nearly 2 years, and the Tombow for about 14. The ATG is a tape, no dots or tabs.
That being said, I have one Kokuyo dotnroller refill left. I bought it on a whim and don't need it and would be happy to send it to you if you'd like. Just email me and let me know! (I'm in Albany, OR)
Smiles!

I'm off to check my LSS here in Canada THIS AFTERNOON after reading your post! I just ran out of Kokuyo Dot-N-Roller over the weekend (and I usually have several refills on hand). I will be so incredibly BUMMED if they are stopping distributing here (which I am guessing they may be if they are not distrib'ing in the US anymore). This was much better than the Tombow mono in my opinion which is what I used pre-Kokuyo. The Tombow I used was permanent but never seemed to adhere well for me. Maybe it was just me -- ie, "user error" but ??? What a bummer :( I'm interested to hear what you switch to. And I'm going to read the rest of the posts about what others are using & recommending to you. Heidi

I would be cool if there could be a 'survey' of the top choices so we could see the % of each one that people pick. Is that possible?

Love. My. ATG. Seriously, it is big and bulky, but I totally love it. Hasn't been a huge problem when packing things up to take to a crop! You won't be sad if you have one. I use the yellow gun, I think the adhesive is 1/4 inch and it does not go on like dots or tabs, you just scroll out how much you need. Can be as long or as short of a strip as you need. Glides on really easily and the handle is quite ergonomic in my opinion! The refills last WAY longer than refills for other adhesives and it is much more economic price-wise. Just make sure you order the acid-free adhesive refills. I do keep a Tombow mono-adhesive on hand if I need to go somewhere and don't have much room to pack the ATG in. You will not regret the ATG!

Love the red ATG and you can find refills online for as little as $3.50. One roll lasts for quite a while, even if you use a LOT of adhesive on things.
